Ubuntu Networking :: Netgear WG311V3 PCI Card Installed - Can't Get It To Work?
Feb 2, 2010
I have been searching through these forums the past couple of day as I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on my custom whitebox. I have had windows 7 on it in the past, but want something different now.
I guess my main question is if anyone knows a simple to install wireless card (pci or usb) for ubuntu 9.10 64. I currently have the Netgear WG311V3 PCI card installed, but I can not for the life of me get it to work under Ubuntu. I have tried numerous different methods from search google, these posts, etc. but I can not get any of them to work.

I already have a wifi card- the netgear wg311v3. that had almost NO linux compatibility, so I won't make the mistake of buying any old wifi card again. What I want to know is, what's a good wifi card for Linux. Here are some requirements I have for it:
Preferably 802.11n support, but I could settle for "G" Out of the box support. As in, I don't have to use Ndiswrapper. Just pop it in, and let ubuntu do the rest I would prefer a USB based dongle, but PCI would be good too. I don't have any brand preferece.

This installed my Netgear WG311v3 Wi-Fi card on this machine using Fedora 14 x86_64 it took me a while to do so in the future I can (hopefully) follow this guide myself in the future and for anyone who is having problems. First thing you need to do is make sure your system and kernel is up-to-date:
Code:
su yum update next you need to make sure that the kernel headers are installed so you can compile ndiswrapper (which is no longer available on FreshRPMs) and GCC as well as svn to get the latest build of ndiswrapper:
Code:
su yum install kernel-headers gcc svn Now we need to get the latest build of ndiswrapper to make and install it; make sure you do this outside of root:

I've gone through tutorial after tutorial and finally I've given up and I'm resorting to asking the forums. I've got Slackware 13.1 64-bit and I've got a Netgear WG311v3 and I obviously want them to work together! I installed ndiswrapper and I've tried several different drivers from several different tutorials, but I can't get them to work. At first I couldn't get modprobe ndiswrapper to work, but that was because ndiswrapper.ko was in the wrong folder. I moved it manually and executed depmod -a and modprobe ndiswrapper started working.I've gathered all the information I anticipated and I'm going to post it at the end of this. Anything I don't supply that is relevant ask for and I'll try and get it. I'm desperate to get this driver working correctly so I can get back to my life on Slackware. Here's the information:

I'm having trouble installing my wireless card drivers. I've read a lot on this using Ndiswrapper to install my drivers but when I go to install I get this.
linux-8h6g:/wg311 # ndiswrapper -i wg311v3.inf couldn't open wg311v3.inf: No such file or directory at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper line 219.
I'm giving the right path to the inf file tried moving to other folders and still nothing.

I installed 10.04 onto an old dell and its was running great, internet etc.. I then had my home desktop crash and said great, let me bring the dell home so the wife can use it. At home, i have a wireless card ( Netgear WG311 ) that I then installed into the Dell. Being that she was needing to use it online right away, I searched for the first install as it was not detected, and used used synaptic to install the bcmwl-kernal-source as that was the prefer ed driver for Netgear. So now that I installed that, not only have I not fixed the wireless issue, I now have no wired internet. I've been searching and re reading as many steps as I can, but am running out of time as she needs the computer tomorrow. Installed the ndwrapper ? but was not able to actually get the driver installed. All the other threads seem to be older ubuntu versions, and maybe its just me but the slight variation from one to the nex has me a little confuzed.

I have 10.04 lucid installed on a presario 2800t laptop(it's old and hasn't got much memory). Anyway, now I can't get my Netgear WNA1100 to work. I know it works right away with 11.04, but that isn't really an option for me. It's too slow on this old computer. get it working with 10.04?

i can't get my wg111t netgear wireless adapter to work. I followed the help thing by installing ndisgtk, which installed successfully. I was able to load up the file on the cd that also the help page said. The problem is that the computer won't load up the adapter as it would load up my cd's and flash drive. Here's how i installed ndisgtk. I installed the files ndiswrapper_common, ndiswrapper_1.9, and then the ndisgtk_0.8.5.All of these were for i386.

so I had to reinstall Ubuntu. But now my Wireless card won't work. It used to work before (plug and play), and I have no problem with it when I boot from the CD.I cannot use my cable connection because as soon as I plug my computer in, the network crashes, the router doesn't respond, gets hot and refuses to work until I unplug it and let it cool off for 2 minutes.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, Desktop PC.

I'm working with 10.10 (Maverick) on an older Compaq laptop. Wireless card is a Cisco Aironet 350. This card is listed as supported and drivers included in the server distro.
During the Network configuration portion of the install, I selected eth1 (wireless); the card came active and a valid network connection was established.
However, after the full server installation the interface (eth1) is not seen.
What's confusing is that modprobe -l shows the drivers as present:
kernel/drivers/net/wireless/airo.ko
kernel/drivers/net/wireless/airo_cs.ko
Insertion and removal of the card is noted in /var/log/messages:
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1 pccard: card ejected from slot 1
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket1 pccard: card inserted into slot 1
(I'd be happy to supply more info, but currently set up with Fluxbox and I'll be darned if I can get copy from the xterm to paste into Firefox...)

this is my kernel:

I installed newest Ubuntu system, 11.04, Natty-Narwhal, and PC is running smoothly. It is solid machine, Celeron 430, 1 gb of DDR2 memory and I have both LAN card and graphics integrated on the mobo which is MSI 7529, based on G31/P35/P31 chipset.
I plugged lan cable directly from my PC to the ADSL router. There is another Win Xp machine on the same router and it has connection, and internet is working fine. Right now Im writing from the Win 7 laptop, which is connected to the same router via wifi link... all working like a charm...
But, when I plug the Ubuntu desk I cannot get access to bot lan and internet...
I searched the net and it seems that ubuntu didnt install proper driver during the OS installation. Here are some diagnostics of the current config and state:
Code:
Module Size Used by
binfmt_misc 13213 1
snd_hda_codec_realtek 255820 1
code....
As you can see I need to install driver named r8101 instead this one r8169 and I think it will work that way. I found driver here only problem is dont know how to replace them.

All my other systems work fine, tried setting mtu to 1492. Everything is set manually in network connections. Tried deleting and making a new connection. I set the dns servers in the /etc/resolve (don't remember the exact path.) I can ping servers fine. This was a fresh install of 9.10. Again, the internet worked fine until I installed the updates from the update manager.I had internet problems when I first started using ubuntu a couple years ago.

I bought a netbook and couldn't handle windows xp at all, so installed ubuntu 9.10, but the wireless network icon doesn't appear on the top of the screen like it should, presumably because ubuntu doesn't automatically recognize whatever card is in there. This is an asus 1001-HA. could anyone assist me with getting this thing up and running on a wireless network?

I have been messing around with ubuntu for a few hours now trying to get my wireless driver to work, but I am having no luck. It seems like I installed the driver right, and network-admin use to show the wireless, but I couldn't unlock it to mess with properties. Now it doesn't even show wireless, and I still can't unlock it, so I'm unable to get my wireless card to work.

My onboard lan card was cutting out during samba file transfers so I put in a PCI lan card and disabled the integrated one. Now I'm having trouble getting it to work. I appologize in advance, I'm completely ignorant as to how to change net cards in Ubuntu and am quite new to Linux in general.I'd copy and paste my lspci, but I can't connect to that computer nor the internet with it now.
