Ubuntu Networking :: AE 1000 Linksys Driver Disabled After Auto-updates Installed
Dec 9, 2010
I recently had my AE 1000 linksys wireless adapter driver installed, the info for which can be found here:
[URL]
But today I was presented with 142 automatic updates already downloaded waiting to be installed on my computer. I installed the updates and restarted my computer for the updates to take effect. Well, since then my wireless adapter no longer registers at all, it doesn't even recognize my router let alone connect to it. It is as inoperable as the day I got it.
I am currently using a different computer in the house to get internet. Should I go about following the same directions I did before and reinstall the driver, or is there a more simple way?

My 32-bit Celeron M laptop has a Linksys WPC300N PCMCIA wireless N card (Broadcom 4321 chipset).
I tried but have been unable to install the akmod version of the broadcom-wl driver:
Code:

Code:
FATAL: Module wl not found.

The card is recognized by lspci but the driver module broadcom-wl is not found. I don't see b43 and ssb modules so I can't blacklist them.

i have just installed a Fritz Wlan USB stick on a practically fresh Maverick 32 Bit install with ndiswrapper.(i used this guide [in german] [URL]...so far so well, problem is, i cant enable the wireless. As far as i can see, this is no "on-button" issue. The build in wireless is either dead or never been there. It shows in the output below, but the "wifi-on/off" button doesnt do anything to the LED thats supposed to turn on and in an case... no connection. I think basically what my problem is that i can't figure out how to enable the wireless (its greyed out in the network-manager) i also installed the 32Bit version of the driver on a 32Bit Notebook. below is some output of what i found on other threads to try:

I applied the latest updates today and when I rebooted, My wireless broadcom driver is not working and the ifconfig does not list it either anymore, was working 8 min ago but is now dead. If I turn off the wireless with a switch and back on, I get a blue light but it remains disabled and greyed out on the network icon. Ubuntu 10.04, latest updates applied daily. I removed the driver and reinstalled it, it did not help at all. Also, my Truecryt gdecrypt stopped working.
Update: it seems the wireless switch on the front of the laptop is now working backwards, in checking the daemon log I found Turning off the wifi so the light goes out:
Oct 2 20:09:18 chuck-laptop NetworkManager: <info> WiFi now enabled by radio killswitch
Oct 2 20:09:18 chuck-laptop NetworkManager: <info> (eth1): bringing up device.
Oct 2 20:09:18 chuck-laptop NetworkManager: <info> (eth1): supplicant interface state: starting -> ready
[code]...
Update, I found that if I boot the laptop up with the networking switch off, then, after I'm booted up, turn it on, it works. However if I reboot the laptop with the network switch in the on position I get the above issue with the switch being inverted and not working properly.

My Toshiba NB100 originally came pre-installed with 8.04 LTS and even has a 'Ubuntu Certified' case sticker, so I expected that jumping to the next LTS should be easy... It was. Simply burnt the image to a thumb drive, booted into the live mode, saw that everything worked and installed it. Everything that worked in 8.04 works here. Not a single problem!
Of course, you have to do a clean install though because the 8.04 supplied by Toshiba is disabled to only allow updates for 8.04 but not to upgrade. I did not need to install any 'Payson' packages and the once proprietary wireless driver is now not, so I have a totally non-proprietary system.
As well as looking nicer and booting faster there are other pluses. I can now upgrade in future without a clean install (if I want) and hopefully no longer have to put up with updates breaking the system - for example sound disappeared on two 8.04 updates (a finding found by many NB100-11R users) and the last update which pushed me to try 10.04 ASAP also made my webcam undetectable and the keyboard mapping all wrong. No such problems here now and I don't expect it.
So, if you have Toshiba-NB100-11R, there is absolutely nothing to lose. Backup your valued files and go for it. Totally painless. Of course you'll need add all the restricted stuff back yourself, but that's not hard. EDIT: Only one thing doesn't work (that doesn't bother me): the function key to toggle wireless on and off. It always remains on.

I've just installed Fedora 12 (32 bit) KDE on my test system and have a couple of issues.I haven't played with Fedora for a couple of years, so I'm not very familiar with it. I haven't had the problems with Kubuntu, OpenSUSE nor Mandriva, so I'm a bit in the dark here. I'll see if someone can help me with my sound issue, before moving on to the next problem. I've read seveal posts about sound issues, but not sure exactly if any are the same as I'm having.
After installing Fedora 12, sound was all working fine. I think installed all the available updates, which is when the problem began. Basically, I have sound in Hulu, Firefox videos such as CNN, etc. But, I have no sound at startup or shutdown....system sounds, I suppose I should say. I have disabled SELinux and the firewall, before I began updates. Looking in KInfoCenter under Audio, I see:
Audio Devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONF VIA8247 with ALC655 at 0xc400 IRQ11 In System Settings>Multimedia I see Internal Audio Analog Stereo as the only device shown. I have unchecked Mute and have all volume controls up all the way in KMix, which shows HDA Nvidia on the tab.

I've searched google and read quite a few threads on the the topic of installing the new enhanced rt73-k2wrlz.3.03 driver and modprobe my rt73usb driver but I'm running into a road block here when I get these messages after I run sudo make install.I have attached a screenshot.I have already run sudo aptitude.Sudo aptitude safe-upgrade.Sudo aptitude install linux headers.
***Update /etc/modprobe.d/ralink alias for wlan*
***Install firmware in /lib/firmware...
***Check old config
Is it having problems locating the firmware; How do I update the alias.I can get online to learn. Something to not is I've tried blacklisting the drivers before installation and also after. This time I still havent modprobed rt73 from following this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1178790 nor have I plugged in my Wireless adapter during the installation phase yet.

I have a Netgear WNA-1000 that I can't get recognized on any of my Ubuntu boxes (8.10, 9.04, 9.10). This page says that it should work with the ar9170usb driver, and that this driver is already part of the mainline Linux kernel as of 2.6.30. It also noted that ar9170usb does not claim this device's USB-ID at this time.
How do I (a) get this driver to recognize and work with my WNA-1000 under 9.10?
(b) get this driver installed and working under the older versions of Ubuntu that I also have?

I am very new to Ubuntu and if I could get internet I'm sure I would love it as it appears very speedy! I don't want to resort to reloading Windows just because of this!I've managed to install the RT2870.inf driver for my Belkin wireless adaptor but couldn't install the sys file. Hence my adaptor still won't work - well I think this is why but hoping someone can enlighten me step by step.

I'm using a Dell with Broadcom bcmwl6.inf driver. I tried the guides using ndiswrapper, but they didn't work for me. What worked was simply going to System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers and activating the Broadcom STA proprietary driver. That sounds great, but every time I restart, I have to remove and install the driver from Hardware Drivers.
What should I do to keep the driver loaded and claimed at the start. This is my lshw -C network before and after removing and installing wireless card driver.

I've read a lot about wireless network cards but I haven't found something similiar to my problem. I've a belkin wireless card F5D7000tt and its driver bcmwl5.inf. I think I've correctly installed it because when I use "ndiswrapper -l" i get:
WARNING: all config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future realease.
bcmlw5.inf: driver installed
device (14E4:4320) present (alternate driver : ssb)
But when I go to Hardware Drivers I see that "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" is not enabled, and when a try to enable it I get an error message:"We are sorry, but the installation of this driver failed. Check the register archive to see more details: /var/log/jockey.log"

i found this quote: WPA/WPA2 are broken in every module everybody has tried (AFAIK) since Adam's 1.7.1.1 DKMS driver. Downgrade like so: 1) Get the driver from [URL]... 2) Go to terminal, and move the pre-installed driver so it won't get loaded. cd /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/ sudo mv rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.bak. 3) Install rt2860-dkms_1.7.1.1_all.deb. It will also install dependencies needed to compile the driver. If it doesn't retrieve the right packages, make sure "build-essential", "linux-header-generic" and "dkms" is installed. Let it run and it should complete without a problem. 4) Restart. The new driver should work automatically. the deb file gives me an error.

I have just installed 10.04 on a dell inspiron laptop, but the wireless adapter will not work. I uses a broadcom BCM4312. When I click on the wireless icon, it says "firmware missing". Normally, I would connect to look for proprietary drivers, but my problem is that I live in an apartment complex with only wifi.
So my question is, A) does this sound like a driver problem, and B) if so, how can I get the necessary driver installed (after downloading it with another laptop) when I use lshw, it does show the wireless device, by says that it is disabled. I tried following the directions here [URL]... (changing "ieee80211_crypt_tkip" with "lib80211_crypt_tkip" due to the rename in 2.6.29. I think that is correct), but that did not work either.

I just installed a series of Ubuntu 9.10 updates, and after rebooting the machine, I can no longer connect via ethernet / lan to the internet. The connection manager just shows the spinning graphic showing the adapter is attempting to connect to the internet. I don't know which update caused it, and I'm not very good with linux. I was using network manager, and I believe that package was uploaded! Help, what should I do now? My Ubunutu is completely useless without a connection to the internet.

I was able to successfully put together the driver with the Linksys WUSB100 v2 using ndiswrapper.
Here is what i get from ndiswrapper -l: rt2870: driver installed device (1737:0078) present (alternate driver: rt2870sta)But, the catch is where it maps to: ra0 instead of wlan0. This has caused me problems in order to get it to connect through network-manager or in the terminal.
ifconfig output for ra0:

Before I start off, I must say that I know NOTHING about Ubuntu. I only know how to run .deb files. So I installed my wireless driver via the graphical ndiswrapper (FYI my wireless adapter is a Proxim 8424-WD). It then said "Unable to see if hardware is present". After I exited out of that message, it said "Hardware:Present" (or something of that sort) next to the newly installed driver. I tried searching for wireless networks and found none. I'm guessing something didn't work right. I used this command "lshw -C network" and got the following result.

I used to have a PCi wireless card but decided to upgrade to a 802.11n device. I run the lshw -C network command and no output is shown for the usb dongle. I have installed ndiswrapper and it states the driver is installed, but a popup always appears stating that Ubuntu cannot recognise if the hardware is present, but once this is closed the remaining window shows the dongle is present. So Ubuntu (9.10 btw) can recognise the card is present in the windows driver window, but not in lshw -c network. Any ideas?
There are a number of posts about older Sweex products with different chipsets, but none seem to answer my query. NB my chipset is Ralink RT3070

I am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.

I'm remote from my system and so have to wait 2-3 days before I can get access directly, but I've noticed that when the kernel updates automatically (or forced by me), the next reboot stops at the grub page awaiting confirmation of the kernel I want to boot. grub.conf doesnt seem significantly different from that of fedora (my previos distro for this machine) and even has the default lines and times spec'd, so I can't see what's holding it up. Any ideas how I can prevent this so I can have my system auto-updating the kernel AND safe to reboot remotely?

Nearly every time that automatic updates finishes installing the software and requires a restart of the OS, the PC locks up at the 'Ubuntu' screen with some dots beneath it.
I have been just been forcing it down by powering off/on the PC - which I figure is probably not a safe thing to do but don't know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this problem.
I've looked at some of the log files but can't make any sense of most of them nor do I know which log file might show the problem.
