Ubuntu Networking :: HP DV2000 Wireless Wont Budge?

Apr 13, 2010

I finally decided to make the final move into Ubuntu (from XP) and i seem to be having a problem with my wireless. I remember getting it to work on this same PC under Hardy Heron but now I'm stuck. I installed the OS as a dual boot with XP so i could move files back and forth and such. When i click on the network icon i see "Wireless network - Disconnected" also this laptop does not have a regular LAN adapter. If i do an LSpci i see the device Broadcom bcm4311 listed. I see the network disabled on lshw I followed this guides to try to make thinks work and didnt achieve a thing![URL]... P.S. I have the feeling that the issue is related to a button on the side of the computer that enables/disables the wifi. Under ubuntu said button does not work and the network appears to be disabled in spite of device being listed and drivers being present. any tips? there are no hot keys marked in the keyboard that would enable wifi)

Ubuntu Installation :: Flawless Upgrade On Toshiba NB-100-11R - Disabled To Only Allow Updates For 8.04

May 2, 2010

My Toshiba NB100 originally came pre-installed with 8.04 LTS and even has a 'Ubuntu Certified' case sticker, so I expected that jumping to the next LTS should be easy... It was. Simply burnt the image to a thumb drive, booted into the live mode, saw that everything worked and installed it. Everything that worked in 8.04 works here. Not a single problem!

Of course, you have to do a clean install though because the 8.04 supplied by Toshiba is disabled to only allow updates for 8.04 but not to upgrade. I did not need to install any 'Payson' packages and the once proprietary wireless driver is now not, so I have a totally non-proprietary system.

As well as looking nicer and booting faster there are other pluses. I can now upgrade in future without a clean install (if I want) and hopefully no longer have to put up with updates breaking the system - for example sound disappeared on two 8.04 updates (a finding found by many NB100-11R users) and the last update which pushed me to try 10.04 ASAP also made my webcam undetectable and the keyboard mapping all wrong. No such problems here now and I don't expect it.

So, if you have Toshiba-NB100-11R, there is absolutely nothing to lose. Backup your valued files and go for it. Totally painless. Of course you'll need add all the restricted stuff back yourself, but that's not hard. EDIT: Only one thing doesn't work (that doesn't bother me): the function key to toggle wireless on and off. It always remains on.

Fedora :: Disabled SELinux And The Firewall Before Began Updates?

Jan 18, 2010

I've just installed Fedora 12 (32 bit) KDE on my test system and have a couple of issues.I haven't played with Fedora for a couple of years, so I'm not very familiar with it. I haven't had the problems with Kubuntu, OpenSUSE nor Mandriva, so I'm a bit in the dark here. I'll see if someone can help me with my sound issue, before moving on to the next problem. I've read seveal posts about sound issues, but not sure exactly if any are the same as I'm having.

After installing Fedora 12, sound was all working fine. I think installed all the available updates, which is when the problem began. Basically, I have sound in Hulu, Firefox videos such as CNN, etc. But, I have no sound at startup or shutdown....system sounds, I suppose I should say. I have disabled SELinux and the firewall, before I began updates. Looking in KInfoCenter under Audio, I see:

Audio Devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONF VIA8247 with ALC655 at 0xc400 IRQ11 In System Settings>Multimedia I see Internal Audio Analog Stereo as the only device shown. I have unchecked Mute and have all volume controls up all the way in KMix, which shows HDA Nvidia on the tab.

Ubuntu Networking :: AE 1000 Linksys Driver Disabled After Auto-updates Installed

Dec 9, 2010

I recently had my AE 1000 linksys wireless adapter driver installed, the info for which can be found here:

[URL]

But today I was presented with 142 automatic updates already downloaded waiting to be installed on my computer. I installed the updates and restarted my computer for the updates to take effect. Well, since then my wireless adapter no longer registers at all, it doesn't even recognize my router let alone connect to it. It is as inoperable as the day I got it.

I am currently using a different computer in the house to get internet. Should I go about following the same directions I did before and reinstall the driver, or is there a more simple way?

Ubuntu Networking :: HP Pavilion Wireless Enable/Disable Button / "Wireless Disabled By Hardware Switch"?

May 11, 2011

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.

I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.

Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.

As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.
----
EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.
-----
EDIT 2:
found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty
seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled On 9.10?

Jul 16, 2010

I cannot seem to enable my wireless connection in 9.10. I know that the connection WAS WORKING maybe a month or so ago. However, 99% of the time I am wired.I am using a BCM4312 It shows up in lspci The drivers are loaded (wl, lib80211 and lib80211_crypt_tkip) If I look at System->Administration->Hardware Drivers the Broadcom STA driver is active. dmesg says that the interface is eth1 but then moves it to eth2 If I click on the network icon in the panel I have options for connecting to eth0 (wired lan which works fine) but under "Wireless Networks" it says "Wireless is disabled" in gray.

Ubuntu :: Suspend Button (fn+f5) On Hp Pavilion Dv2000 Laptop Not Functioning

I have a problem with the suspend button (fn+f5) on my hp pavilion dv2000 laptop. It is working but only after an intervention. So, every I boot up my system the short-cut/button is not functioning. In order to make it work I have to open the Power Management Preferences and close them. I don't even need to change anything there. Now the button will be working just fine until the next restart. It's pretty annoying to visit the Power Management after each restart, isn't it. Any ideas how could I fix this?

Ubuntu :: Wireless Disabled On Boot - Cannot Re-enable

May 21, 2010

I have recently installed 10.4 (wubi installation), and am having strange problems with my networking.

It was working fine, wireless enabled, connecting to my network fine. Then for what seems like no reason, it decided to disable the wirless on boot, and I cannot re-enable it, the option to enable it (by right clicking the nm applet) is greyed out.

I have had this problem twice now, the first time it happened, my ubuntu installation was really new, so I just reinstalled, no harm done. The second time I did something that seemed to fix it (for a while at least), but now that is not working.

Ubuntu Networking :: Source Of Disabled Wireless?

Jun 28, 2010

My wireless was working fine for about a year using 9.10 until I installed an update about May 28 2010. After that my HP laptop did not recognize any wireless routers including my Netgear. In early June I upgraded to 10.04. My HP laptop has: product: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter vendor: Atheros Communications Inc. Dose the following apply when looking for the source of my disabled wireless found at: [URL]

Setting wireless regulatory domain via module option no longer supported. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS enables the CRDA wireless regulatory framework for controlling which wireless channels are usable and visible in a particular location. If you previously had to use the module option similar to that below in /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf to allow access to certain channels in your locality then you may find that wireless will not function at all: options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=EU You should remove this kernel module option on upgrade from releases earlier than Ubuntu 9.04 and use the iw*reg command instead. Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disabled - How To Re-enable

Aug 22, 2010

We're on vacation here with free wifi and I brought two laptops. The older of the two laptops running Ubuntu 10.04 and a Broadcom wireless chip suddenly wouldn't work this morning. I checked and it says wireless disabled, however wireless is grayed out when I right click on network manager. I have -no- idea what to do. I've never seen wireless just die like that. I popped open the cover but the wireless card is fine. I re-seated it, booted back up, still no sign of it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Disabled / Enable This?

Sep 10, 2010

I updated from Ubuntu 9 to 10 some while ago and can no longer connect to the internet via wireless. The computer is a Medion 96290 with a USB wireless card. Running "lsusb" gives code...

This tells me a driver is installed but it may not be the correct one. I copied this driver from the Windows driver file.

Network Manager shows "Wireless Network" greyed out and "wireless is disabled".

WICD shows net8187b as the installed driver and that the hardware is present.

There is a wireless switch on the keyboard which it was not necessary to use in Ubuntu 9 and is inoperative in Ubuntu 10.

I have searched through and applied many suggestions without success and have posted this problem on a couple of forums, again without success.
