Ubuntu :: Upgrade Realtek ALC888 Drivers Now Cannot Detect ANY Sound Card
Jul 4, 2011
I'm using Xubuntu Natty at the moment, on an Acer Aspire 5739G. Figured I would go to Realtek's site and get the most recent soundcard driver, since the built-in subwoofer has never worked on Linux for me.
I used the automatic install script, then when it tried to probe for other devices, suddenly I had no sound.
I'm currently getting
Code:
korin@corrosion:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...
I tried reinstalling the ALSA driver, but to no avail. I now have no sound, and no idea a) why this failed, and b)

Has anyone successfully installed the driver for this sound card? I'm interested in obtaining the 5.1 sound through coaxial S/PDIF but I am far from getting there. The manufacturer has a driver for linux but I cannot build it because of a deprecated package in 9.10 release (alsa-utils). I tried to force an install of the package but I ran into other errors. Right now I sometimes get sound (not 5.1) but it's far from being reliable. At this moment I get no sound through the coaxial output without even restarting the machine so I have no idea what happened.
PS: My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M78SM-S2H with a GeForce 8200 chipset.

I updated my Slackware installation to 13.37 today. I was running current (a few weeks old).
I recently bought a new set of 2.1 speakers, so i thought of re-running alsaconf and then alsamixer.
Thats when i got this strange error:
Code:
These are the contents of my /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Code:
Here is the output of lspci and dmesg:
lspci:
Code:
dmesg:
Code:
Ok...The funny thing is, the sound still works! (Alsamixer shows all the 6 channels of my previous 5.1 speaker system).
Additional Info:
*Am using a customized kernel - version 2.6.39-rc5.
**It does not work in the default Kernel 2.6.37.6, not even in 2.6.38.
*** It works in kernel version 2.6.35.x and 2.6.36.x. (I checked!)

I installed a sound card but when I go to System->Preferences->Sound and go to Hardware it's not showing anything at all. If I boot from the Live CD then it will show the card and it works. How can I make my Linux installation detect this card? I was thinking that I could somehow copy the necessary files from the Live CD to make this work, but maybe there's an easier way.

I am using 10.04 64-bit on a GA-770TA-UD3 motherboard with onboard Realtek ALC888 audio chip. I'm having scratchy sound with games like World of goo and Penumbra. I solved the problem for Penumbra by selecting OSS option instead of ALSA from the settings menu but I'dont have that option in World of goo (and many other games).I have no problem with video or audio files. The board is [URL]..

Well i will write this down one more time i hope you don't delete it again To enable surround sound with ALC888 on Intel DG31PR for all versions of ubuntu inluding Lucid.(this works on other distros with alsa as well) gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Find this line (if there is no such line (or the file is empty) it doesn't matter just add the next line and save it)(note that on older Ubuntu versions the file is named "alsa-base" as far as i remember): # Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
Add this line after the #Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index0: options snd_hda_intel model=3stack-6ch-dig Then use this command to edit pukeaudio: gksu gedit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
Find this line:
; default-sample-channels = 2
Change it to (make sure to remove the ; in front of it):
default-sample-channels = 6

I have severe sound issues with my sound card. I am on a dell E1505, by now I am assuming there is some kinda update I have to get for this to work right, like the wireless driver. It's all static and causes programs to not run right, then when you go to close the programs effected, they freeze up..

so here I go I'm looking at upgrading from my onboard sound on my Dell Optiplex Gx620 to either a Sound Blaster Audigy SE by Creative, or an Asus Xonar DG (I've read bad things about this card so any experience of this under 11.4 would be fantastic).
I need low profile size cards as my little Dell is the Desktop variety. I'm not fussed about the bracket, I normally take them off if there's no LP Bracket in the box It's main use will be playback of lots of music as well as some movies. The sound is going to my Sherwood Hi-Fi amplifier, so just a better output is what I'm looking for, to make music a bit more enjoyable

I upgraded to a new(er) soundcard this morning on my Slack 13.1 desktop box. I ran alsoconf and got sound working in everything but Firefox flash. It's not specifically a flash problem; flash sound works just fine in Konqueror. It's a Firefox issue. I created the following login script in order to try and force the new card to be recognized as the default:
Code:
bash-4.1$ cat .asoundrc
pcm. !default {
type hw
card 1
} ctl. !default {
type hw
card 1 }

I've had some hiccups with my the wired connections on my new ASUS M5A88-M motherboard, ethernet card is a Realtek 8111E. The default drivers keep giving me an unstable connection - keeps starting and stopping. I figure it must be the drivers since the connection is fine when I boot to the windoze os. I went here and downloaded the "LINUX driver for kernel 2.6.x and 2.4.x (Support x86 and x64)" file. Untarred and ran the .sh. Checked speedtest.net and the result was almost a mirror, if not better, than when I did speedtest on the windoze os. I read this thread here which gave me some insight. The .sh appears to have replaced a r8169 driver with the one I downloaded, r8168. But when I restart, it reverts to the r8169 driver.

is how I added the RealTek 8188CE (or other RealTek drivers) to my newly installed Fedora 14 on a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4056 laptop. This is assuming you have performed a regular install of Fedora 14 and have done nothing else.
1. Download the drivers at the RealTek download page here:URL...Search for your model in the "Download Search" box and selecting the Linux version of the software. In my case I typed in 8188CE and selected RTL8188CE (Software).
2.Extract the downloaded file into the desired location, open a terminal window, and navigate to the folder where you extracted the drivers.
3.Enable Sudo using the following command:su -echo "username ALL=(ALL) ALL" >> /etc/sudoers.Where "username" is your account username.
4.While still logged on as root, type in the following to install gcc and the kernel headers:yum install gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers patch make exit(From this point you really only have to follow the readme.txt instructions in the drivers folder, but I'll add them here)
5.Change to Super User sudo su
6. Compile driver from the source code make
7. Install the driver to the kernel make install reboot

Just made the jump to Ubuntu, and until this install I considered myself very tech savvy. Now not so much! Built my new desktop, loaded Ubuntu 64 bit no problem. But I'm having a terrible time figuring out how to load the native driver for my realtek wireless adapter. I successfully un-tarred the file, and used the terminal to run the make command by using cd command to navigate to the file. It returned a wall of text, and in my mind looked to work. Next I go to run "./clean" in the same file location in the terminal and it returns:
"ERROR: Module r8192s_usb does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module ieee80211_rsl does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module ieee80211_crypt_ccmp does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module ieee80211_crypt_tkip does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module ieee80211_crypt_wep does not exist in /proc/modules
ERROR: Module ieee80211_crypt does not exist in /proc/modules
Not completely sure if this is an issue, I try moving to the next step of instructions issuing the command "insmod 8712u.ko" in the terminal same file location and get the error message
insmod: error inserting '8712u.ko': -1 Operation not permitted
I've tried running "sudo insmod 8712u.ko" from both that file directory, and from my home file directory. My guess is I'm missing a step or need to be typing these commands in a different file directory in the terminal.

I am trying desperately to get my wireless n adapter to work. I had it running sporadically with ndiswrapper for some months now (it was always unreliable). I have downloaded the driver installed it, and it works fine. But i can't get to turn it off. I do have the ability to unload the driver's kernel modules and the sysyem does not see my card after that. That's ok, but i'm thinking it still uses my battery power. The wifi led is always on no matter what i do. The fn+<wifi key> doesn't to anything.

I have installed 9.04 ( I currently have it on dual boot with Windows XP) and my problem is that I have no internet connection. I have a Motorola modem with a Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet NIC network card ( it's a wired connection, btw) When I plug in the cable, there's a little animation, but after a while I get the message: Wired connection is not active (or something like that) Here's what I did so far:
1) I ticked the Wake-On-Lan option in XP, since I read it in the forums that I could solve my problem. It did not
2) I turned off my modem, rebooted my system.
3) I deleted the Auto Ethernet network, and plugged in the cable again...no use.
4) I did an ifconfig, since I know that is what you guys really want
evajulia@Derek:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:18:f3:ab:2b:3a
inet6 addr: fe80::218:f3ff:feab:2b3a/64 Scope:Link

Well I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit along side Windows 7, and I've been unable to get any sounds working, apart from the log on sound. So I tried installing some drivers, and now there is no sound at all, and no sound devices show up in System-Preferences-Sound-hardware
I'm using the on board HD Audio (ALC 889A) and using the optical Audio out for 5.1 Surround sound.
I've tried just using the Stereo ( Green Jack ) out, and still nothing. The suggestions on the on the Ubuntu site, and the following post didn't seem to work either.

I Can't find a great deal of posts with the Realtek HD audio.
