Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia X Server Doesn't Recognise S.video?

I have 9.10 64 on a HP TX2020 laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce 6150. I can't get twin monitor to work. When I go into Nvidia X Server, it doesn't recognise the tv over s-video. According to a lot of the forums I've searched, there should be an option to enable xinerama, which there's not. I know I should study this more and I will, but getting simple things to work takes so long on this OS and I'd really just like to see a movie.

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).
I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu.On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

I want to watch a certain video on [url]...., but I get an error message instead. Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8.

Little help needed. just installed ubuntu but it doesn't recognise my wireless card. I'm running an emachines g720. Ive tried looking through some previous posts but the terminal thing frightens me to death really.
I've tried looking through the idiots guide but i'm afraid i'm a better idiot than that! Some nice simple paint by numbers instructions would help me alot if at all possible.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB stick but neither the install nor the LiveCD will recognise my Hard Disk Drive. They only recognise the USB stick and report that install cannot proceed without at least 2.6GB freespace (of which of course there isn't on the USB stick).
I've installed Ubuntu on a couple of systems before but this is the most advanced and I'm certainly no expert. It's an ASUS P6X58D-E mobo with two WD600GB SATA3 HDD's setup in RAID1 configuration. It's already running W7Ultimate x64 OK on it's own 150GB partition. Of course I can't even run gparted from the LiveCD to repartition. I suspect the problem is the RAID config, but not sure what to do.

I'm using my Ubuntu 10.04 as a server, headless or with HDMI receiver/TV setup. There is a lot's of topics how to make it work headless/VNS. I found the least trouble is to make a fake VGA from old VGA cable and 3 resistors. However, when I start my Ubuntu with Fake VGA it won't switch to HDMI when I turn my Receiver/HDMI on. If I restart X it is fastest way to pick the HDMI Video/7.1 Audio up. I can do it via VNC or ssh and going to do it with 'irexec' so my wife will be able to redetect the HDMI and run XBMC with one button click of the remote.The problem is restarting X kills all my GUI apps (KTorrent, ...). Is there a way to force the video driver to restart or redetect the screens?

I'm trying to increase my framerate on World of Warcraft, and I'm not sure if this will help but it should in theory. I'm not even sure if I'm right in my assumption that it's currently non-optimal. nvidia-settings reports the full 1024MB of onboard video memory from my 420GT, but lspci reports three separate figures which don't even add up to 256MB:

Now, I don't know which to trust, is all the video memory being detected or just the pittance that lspci reports? To my mind, more graphics memory means you can store more graphical code and data closer to the gpu resulting in faster framerates, right?

To get multimedia working, or explain what I'm doing wrong.
The problem is that none of the video players doesn't play video, they show only black window and play audio.
I have Fedora 11 Leonidas, fully up-to-date.
I have installed rpmfusion and livna repository.

I have a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit distribution of Ubuntu. The driver for the onboard video card wasn't supported beyond 8.04, so I didn't upgrade. Yesterday, I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card. I installed it and Ubuntu detected it and worked, but the resolution was limited to 640x480 (I think). I figured this would be corrected by updating, so I updated to 9.04. When I had to restart, the option to select which OS (Linux or Win) came up, I selected 9.04, and the ubuntu symbol came on. The status bar went to the end and the screen turned black, flickered 5 times, turned black and stopped progressing. The xorg.conf file is:

currently using nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 185) and a nvidia 8800gt. cpu is an intel c2d e6600, so it's quite a fast pc. video playback is extremely choppy to the point of being unwatchable. it affects all applications that i have tried, such as vlc, movie player and flash videos in mozilla firefox. videos on videos seem slow but playable, but when i try to watch them in full screen there's a drop to about 5fps. cpu usage reaches 100%. scrolling is also slow on large webpages. disabling compiz makes no visible difference.
before i installed nvidia's driver, videos played perfectly. videos play fine in windows xp. it seems as if nvidia's driver is using the cpu to 'process' videos, instead of the graphics card. other than that, ubuntu 9.10 is lightning fast... so what's going on here? i have resolved one issue, that is flash player's performance in firefox. followed instructions [here] and videos is now smooth in full screen. other videos, however, are still stuttering and spiking cpu usage. this must be a widespread issue, but the lack of information on the web shows otherwise.

I have thrown together a frankenstein of spare parts to stream video onto my TV. The GPU is a NX6800GS (geforce 6800). I have used the restricted driver tool to intsal the recommended driver. The VGA output works fine. My problem is that when using the nvidia tool to set up my TV through S-Video on the graphics card, the TV is not detected. This puts me at a dead end, as every how to guide on this forum assumes the nvidia control panel can detect the TV. Can i force video to play over the S-Video port? Do i need some magical unicorn drivers for the card? Any help is appreciated (even a simple "this setup will never work").

I have finally got both video drivers working. Is it me or is the quality of the Intel drivers almost better than the nvidia? I will try something with hardware acceleration soon but the 2D (compiz etc) all works really well.

As of late I've been getting annoying video anomalies (see attachment) when using nvidias proprietary driver. I'm running ubuntu 11.04 64bit, my card is a 240 GTX and the nvidia driver version is 270.41.06.

I'm currently running a three-monitor setup, two of the monitors being connected to an NVIDIA card, and the third being connected to the motherboard's onboard ATI adapter. This works, and it actually works quite well, but after installing the nvidia-current drivers (using the GNOME dialog), I am unable to get any video acceleration going. The GLX module doesn't seem to want to load, and while I'm actually quite impressed with the video performance I'm getting with the open-source drivers, I'd really like to have the OpenGL capability, as it does make things look prettier.
Relevant configs and logs are below.
I should clarify - I don't care about the 3rd monitor on the ATI adapter; I'm only concerned with getting OpenGL working on the two on the NVIDIA - if that's possible, which it may not be...

I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.
At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.

I've tried to enable the drivers for a Nvidia 8400GS video card on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried change desktop background > visual effects. It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I have a Zotac IONITX-F-E motherboard (Intel Atom Dual Core 1.6 GHz + Nvidia ION) -based box with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit installed. Do you or does someone you know have the same setup as I do? If so, do they have 1080p video playback working? If so, what driver are they using? I've tried following every guide I could find, but no luck so far. I have libvdpau1 and libvdpau-dev installed. I have the nvidia 195.36.24 driver installed (I used the nvidia installer). I have mplayer installed (which I compiled from source with --enable-vdpau).
I try to run mplayer with this command:

It turns out that I had already added the nvidia-vdpau repository. However, despite that, I get:

I have the most bizarre problem that started with 10.04. Up until 10.04 I had zero problems with my setup. I am convinced this has something to do with NVIDIA 7100GS and 10.04.
Here is the problem in a nutshell. I have my home desktop, which I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything went just fine except when it booted up and I logged in, the video "shut off", the computer "hung" for about 10 seconds, then came back. I'm able to use it for about 10 seconds then the same thing happens. Video blanks, system hangs, comes back.
I've tried turning off compiz, no effect. I've tried nvidia-current along with other versions (including the one from the website) and they ALL have the same problem. I know it's not a hardware issue as I can boot the live CD just fine. I also upgraded to 10.04.1 and that worked fine until I installed the nvidia drivers. Here is what I dont understand either. I did a apt-get remove --purge nvidia* and the problem still existed after that.
Something is seriously wonky. I REALLY don't want to re-install the entire box. Now, here is something else that doesnt make sense. I have 10.04 installed on my work box with a Nvidia 9800 graphics card and I have no issues at all.

Ubuntu 10.04, nVidia GeForce 9400, driver ver 195.36.15.When I log in, the system always comes up in 800x600 mode. I went into the NVIDIA X Server Settings page and changed it to my preferred setting of 1152x864. I hit Apply, then Save to X Configuration File (with correct root password).All is well until restarting. Then it reverts back. The update doesn't stick. How can I make this the permenant setting?

Having been using squeeze on my primary system for some time, I decided to install it on my media center PC. After doing a clean install I lost sound (another post) and my maximum video resolution dropped to 1280x1024. I was previously getting 1920x1080 (native) resolution under lenny on this box. So it's a mystery to me why I'm not getting that now. As you can see, the nvidia module is loaded:

I run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

I have noticed that, using nvidia's latest drivers, HDMi output to my 32" LCD (1920x1080) and totem or vlc, the video on my LCD gets a bit "choppy" when the image changes faster.. some bars start appearing on the moving parts of the image.. like the system is having trouble rendering the video. This doesn't happen on my laptop screen even when both displays are running at the same time.
Also, this problem doesn't appear in windows 7, everything works perfectly there with one odd thing... the picture gets "choppy" on the laptop screen when I'm running both at the same time. It's not that noticeable, but I can tell the difference between windows and ubuntu in quality and it's annoying me

I recently upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and shortly before the release upgraded from a geforce 8400gs to my geforce GT240 and noticed no difference on Karmic. I read somewhere that the capability of video cards would be applied further with Lucid. Since installing Lucid I've noticed a severely reduced sharpness and severely increased contrast, changing the contrast in X server has no effect. My hardware driver is activated but not in use and no online fix I've attempted has been successful in resolving the issue. Is it possible to use a gt240 on lucid with no hassle and is there any way I can maximize my video cards capabilities?

My thread is both an information and a discussion/question thread. First of all the information. I have long searched for a solution to my desire for Rosetta Stone in Wine but could not get it to recognise my microphone.
Finally today I removed (uninstalled) pulseaudio. It took a few packages with it and I am waiting to see what effect they will have. But finally, by checking the ALSA Driver in the Wine configuration, along with uninstalling pulseaudio, my Rosetta Stone works perfectly. A great deal better than in my XP Virtualbox Virtual Machine. Stoked! For those who are interested I have Wine 1.1.42-0ubuntu4 installed, Rosetta Stone 3.4.5 and am using a Dell XPS M1530 with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit OS. It's been a long time!!!
My question part relates to the removal of pulseaudio. There have been no obvious negative effects as yet, and from my readings it would seem there shouldn't be, however I am concerned at the other packages it took with it (dependencies). Can anyone give any further advice/info here? I know for sure it took the package ubuntu-desktop which when I try to reinstall it tries to drag pulseaudio and all it's associated packages along with it. Can I/we live without these dependent packages? If not how can I get them back without pulseaudio?

i tried to play any kind of video, it doesn't matter what it is and when i double click it to play, the program acts like it's loading it and then disappears. it doesn't matter what program it is, it does the same thing. i'm using ubuntu 9.10. is their anything i can do about that?

So I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.

I've been having big problems getting 9.10 to work with a Geforce4 MX-4000 card. I know it is not a hardware problem because I've got a dual boot win xp/9.10 setup and the video card works very well under win xp. The monitor is a Samsung P2250. The issue is that the highest resolution available after installing the recommended nvidia 96 driver is 800x600, the same as that before the driver was installed. This is very frustrating because the monitor requires 1920x1080 I'm not sure whether the driver is at fault or the xorg.conf settings.
Should I try installing the nvidia site drivers? I've checked out several forum threads on xorg.conf settings but I'm really not sure how to go on this. What I need is an entry level guide to setting up xorg.conf. The manual here is not that user friendly.
