Little help needed. just installed ubuntu but it doesn't recognise my wireless card. I'm running an emachines g720. Ive tried looking through some previous posts but the terminal thing frightens me to death really.
I've tried looking through the idiots guide but i'm afraid i'm a better idiot than that! Some nice simple paint by numbers instructions would help me alot if at all possible.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB stick but neither the install nor the LiveCD will recognise my Hard Disk Drive. They only recognise the USB stick and report that install cannot proceed without at least 2.6GB freespace (of which of course there isn't on the USB stick).
I've installed Ubuntu on a couple of systems before but this is the most advanced and I'm certainly no expert. It's an ASUS P6X58D-E mobo with two WD600GB SATA3 HDD's setup in RAID1 configuration. It's already running W7Ultimate x64 OK on it's own 150GB partition. Of course I can't even run gparted from the LiveCD to repartition. I suspect the problem is the RAID config, but not sure what to do.
I just bought a netbook, HP DV2-1039WM, which comes with Vista. I wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu 9.10. A problem has arisen in that it doesn't see any wireless card. There is a button on the side with an indicator light that is used to enable/disable wireless. The light is amber and, according to the manual, it is supposed to be blue when wireless is working. The manual just says "push the button" to turn it on, which doesn't do anything.
I recently installed a dual boot on my desktop with Windows 7/Ubuntu, which doesn't have any problems. Are there driver/hardware issues with the setup I am trying on this netbook? The HP website only has drivers for windows OSes listed. Theoretically, I could reinstall windows and/or do a dual-boot, but I'd rather just keep only Ubuntu on it if possible.
So I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install centos5 x86_64 on to an HP Compaq 6820s laptop.It appears the installation has gone ok but I have a big problem in that the centos installation knows nothing about the hardware on the laptop. i.e. it does not recognise the eth0 ethernet card.this means that I have no way of assigning an IP address to the laptop which means that it cannot join the network or the internet.how do you go about getting the correct drivers for the hardware that you are using?

However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

Also, I've been doing some research and found out about some file located /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. So I looked in mine and found out that only my eth0 is added.

when it comes to openSUSE but I am earnestly trying. I installed the openSUSE OS on my HP dv6000 laptop, but it does not seem to recognize my wireless card (which is a Broadcom 4311).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 64 on a HP TX2020 laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce 6150. I can't get twin monitor to work. When I go into Nvidia X Server, it doesn't recognise the tv over s-video. According to a lot of the forums I've searched, there should be an option to enable xinerama, which there's not. I know I should study this more and I will, but getting simple things to work takes so long on this OS and I'd really just like to see a movie.

Installed Orange 515m as per fix shared on this and other forums; however while it works great at home, it will only 'connect' once at work - on subsequent attempts it connects, but browser etc behave as though they cannot find the modem and I cannot make further connections via gmail and Firefox. I had just made the swap from Win 7 to Ubuntu 9.10 for work as well as home, but I cannot be in the position of being unable to access my emails and so swapped my hard drive back to Win 7 drive today

Network Manager scans for other networks in range and find few but my own network is not listed. My other machine (Windows 7 OS) does not have that problem. What could be the problem? Is it the encryption of the network? I've tried with Wicd also - no progress. Did anyone else have the same problem?

My suspect was the driver was 2.6.35.1 kernel based i may need to update my kernel, but i have other laptop having 2.6.32-21 kernel and this card works fine.

what I need is : 1/ make run the wifi USB card D-Link DWA-110
2/ I saw I had problems with yum: when I launch the "add/remove programs" button in the menu, if the "c5-media" item is checked (and only this one) and the DVD of centOS is in the drive, then I have this message : "cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again" I specify I modified the /var/run/yum.pid file (removed the only number which was here)
the main issue for me is the yum failure, because it could be needed for the wifi problem. one thing after the other! the installation is totally new (except that I modified the yum.pid file).

I'm very new to Debian (and Linux in general), and am currently taking a Linux course at college... I'm trying to get Debian running on my MacBook Pro (late 2009 model) and it's been complicated but I've got the operating system installed on it... I'm just having a few problems, the biggest right now of which is my wireless card, which doesn't work. So, I found instructions on the Debian Wiki for getting the driver for it, but it's not compiled already and I have little knowledge of manually installing stuff through Linux...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the XFCE spin of Debian (amd64) on my Lenovo L440. I tried installing it before, but apparently the 3.2 kernel that ships with Wheezy doesn't properly support the proprietary firmware for the wireless card, blah blah. So I wound up using Windows 8.1 for a bit, and then Fedora (boo). Anyway, with the wheezy-backports kernel (3.16.7-ckt4-3~bpo70+1) everything works like a charm. Everything, that is, apart from the sound card — the entire system is completely mute. Well, apart from the system beeper. I searched the forum and found another thread, but that guy was (for some reason) just running dwm — I figured XFCE might feature a more complete sound system. But maybe the output he gave will be useful in my case as well:
