I set up a LAMP server using tasksel and it works great, but I'm not sure about much of the specifics of it. It just works and I have not had a need to find out much about it. So I was wondering if installing updates through the update manager could possible break my LAMP server and if so what types of updates should I look for that could break it?

*Edit* phpmyadmin still runs fine so maybe there's an error in my Apache configuration or my VirtualHosts?
Currently using Nvidia driver version 195.36.31, it's the version that works with Nvidia-kernel-dkms, would updating Nvidia driver to the current 275.09.07 driver version break my setup?

I am trying to uninstall my LAMP server and my Drupal 7 installation. Unfortunately I cannot find any instructions on uninstalling Druapl from my system. The ones that exist are far too old( < 2008 ) to be relevant. Could someone please direct me how to go about this? Note: I did not use Synaptic for installation. I thought I would play around with php for a while and so set forth to configure apache. Whilst I was reading a website for installing LAMP stuff on ubuntu I thought I would give it a go. I installed a LAMP server with:
sudo tasksel install lamp-server
and lo and behold it crashed my operating system upon restart. So both my laptop and desktop were toast.
Everything is reinstalled now so is fine and I have installed apache2 and php5 from separate packages. The one thing that's troubling me is why it crashed. It seemed to uninstall vlc media player, m-player and gnome-player as well as removing the "switch accounts" button on the lock screen. Does anyone know 1) why it died and/or 2) why it chose to eliminate those programs specifically.
I am a total noob with regards Linux so will undoubtedly frequent this board asking some lame questions in the coming weeks. At present I am trying to setup a LAMP Server on an old desktop machine I have lying about, however there is not going to be a keyboard, monitor or mouse attached beyond the installation process. My question simply is am I best installing the server or desktop version of Ubuntu for this requirement?
I have been playing with Desktop 9.04 and found it tough to use headlessly, however understand that Server 9.04 fully supports headless access. Being a newbie I do prefer to use the GUI to make changes and generally play around, so a UI such as GNOME would be essential. Having read about I understand the best way to access remotely is to install SSHServer and VNCServer and then login over SSH and VNC into the box.My remote machine I will use to connect to Ubuntu is a Windoze 7/XP machine.
I think this is a really simple question...forgive me. My installation of Ubuntu server went fine, the box runs great. But I forgot to select "LAMP" server for web/php/mysql etc services. I could re-run the whole thing, but isn't there a shell command to kick me back into the script so I can just add the LAMP stuff?

Or would I have to do a fresh-install, and then copy over the post install data? The reason I'm asking is because, The desktop Wubi is currently running on, has migrated into a router(has some epic umph), and its reached its 30GB limit, and I also have the hard drive space to support it now.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu has been great and it is a great Linux distro. Unfortunately, the update of 9.10 desktop edition to release 10.4 failed on a couple of fronts.
1) Xserver is no longer working;
2) An upgrade of grub-pc causes an exception.
The system ran perfectly before the update was performed. The update resulted in Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of MBR. This is a BAD idea. usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and is use is discouraged.
Based on information found at [URL]... an attempt was made to execute the following command. sudo aptitude dist-upgrade But that resulted in E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run sudo dpkg configure ato correct the problem The later launches an upgrade of grub-pc. This routine requests the selection of which devices are to be used to store grub-install. When that was done ... GRUB failed to install to the followed devices: /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd4
Do you want to continue anyway? If you do, your computer may not start up properly. GRUB installation failed. Continue? Questions:

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I install a totally different Linux distro on my existing Ubuntu 9.10 system, will it break GRUB 2? I was thinking of installing Debian Lenny, but have held off because I do not want to inadvertently wreck the boot arrangement.
I've previously installed Windows after installing Kubuntu, and had to reinstall GRUB as the bootloader as a result. It wasn't a big deal with the old GRUB, but I don't know if it's that easy with GRUB 2.
I am not sure what bootloader Debian Lenny uses. I've been looking but haven't found the answer yet. I guess if it also uses Grub 2, I wouldn't have to fix anything.
I want to try out Lenny because an app I want to use (Teamspeak 3) doesn't play nicely with Pulseaudio. Pulseaudio is integral to Ubuntu 9.10, but I have other options with Debian Lenny. I'd like to see whether the app works better there w/LXDE.
I guess I could also just make a virtual Lenny machine in Virtualbox, but I wouldn't get full use of my hardware, so I wouldn't be able to play Urban Terror (which is why I want to use Teamspeak 3).

I have found some resources including how-to's how to install Debian as the normal operative OS not as the intranet server. I had a working LAMP server on my old server. After a HD went out and was replaced I rebuilt my server with Ubuntu 10.10 server. Talk about a smooth and impressive install. I set up my Apache server and MySQL and even installed php5 just like I had done before on my old server. The only thing different I did with this install is with Apache. I now host 3 websites with virtual hosts. This is the only thing different I have done than the last time.
My problem now is my website won't display PHP. I didn't know I had this problem until I installed Drupal for a friend to play around with. Drupal won't finish the installation process because it claims: In your ./sites/default/settings.php file you have configured Drupal to use a server, however your PHP installation currently does not support this database type.
Know I have googled this phrase to hell and back to find a resolution and haven't. I even talked to my local linux guru at work and he refereed me here. I have tried reinstalling php left and right. I'm convinced that there is an option to enable php globally that I'm missing. I really think the virtual hosts is what is causing this trouble. I'm running with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop edition and I have LAMP server installed on the machine. I'm wanting to host my Automotive Detailing website that I'm almost done with off of that server. I have decals made up for my car and friends cars with the domain that I have registered on it. I think the LAMP works good since I could use it inside the LAN. The configuration of the router is at least partly right because ssh and vsftp work fine(I test by browsing the ip:74.***.***.*** in the lan, not 192.168.1.8 --this also works. ).I cannot access web service outside the LAN.
