Currently using Nvidia driver version 195.36.31, it's the version that works with Nvidia-kernel-dkms, would updating Nvidia driver to the current 275.09.07 driver version break my setup?
View 3 Repliesi installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
My ubuntu 10.04 64 bit system uses the nvidia driver 195.36.24. I do not remember installing it, but I must have installed it using "official channels".In fact, the package nvidia-current is installed on my system.What is the cleanest way to upgrade to a later version of the nvidia driver? I need to do this in order to run a CUDA 4.0 enabled application. Minimum driver version I need: 270.41. I'm willing to ditch Ubuntu 10.04 if necessary.

Back to Unity desktop, I chose Additional Drivers and activated "nvidia-current". However, after reboot, the info window says this driver is activated but not in use.

My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. I am fairly new to Linux. My machine is running Debian 5.0.5 with gcc version 4.3. When I try to install the Nvidia QuadroFX 3450 driver I got from the Nvidia web site I get an error saying:
"The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.1) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.3)....."
Does this mean my gcc version is too new for the driver? if so, how do I roll back to a older version?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old small form factor PC with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1GB RAM, and an nVidia 5200 graphics card 128MB. OK, so a low-spec machine (but that's the great thing about Linux right? Don't need high-end h/w) but it works just fine, except that it can't play full HD (1920x1080) MPEG-4 video. Very jerky and lots of dropped frames. Same in both Movie Player and VLC.
I can't afford to increase the RAM and as it's a SFF I can't just swap the mobo and CPU for something faster so I'm wondering whether getting a higher spec graphics card would make any difference?I'm using the nVidia proprietary binary driver (latest version) and searching the forums I found a post where someone said that the nVidia driver needs at least a 512MB card for HD video.A colleague has a higher spec nVidia card (7600 IIRC) that he'll sell me, but before I spend any money, is this likely to improve things? Well, turns out it should not have been recommended. I had restarted and all I got was a low res ubuntu logo and a boot right into a full screen terminal. Tried startx and got a no screens found, I look online for about an hour last night and decided to just reinstall, which takes a couple hours when installing all the packages.
I have done more research today and found to install the latest linux x64 driver from nVidias website, which I did, but it does not run. I followed some more instructions and it said to do a �sudo chmod +x <file>� which I did, and it starts to open and I get �You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing.�
I�m starting to get a little frustrated here, guess I�m just used to a lot of the ease of windows and assumed that something like installing a graphics card driver would be easy.
I have installed Debian Lenny and the Driver for an NvidiaCard GTX280. As this card is not supported by the debian-repositories, i have installed the driver from the nvida-Site. Xubuntu 9.04 installs the drivers for my wireless pci card on my desktop perfectly. Whenever I update to a newer version, the wireless disappears. I would like to use 10.10 but obviously internet is very important.
Can I tell it to keep the same driver? I actually don't really know what the specific driver it is.

I just re-installed Jessie via Debian non-free DVD. When I run apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, the screen says to the effect :
"Before Nouveau can be used, must remove Nvidia config from xorg.conf and xorg.conf.d"
Is there a simple way to keep Nouveau and blacklist or prevent Nvidia driver from being automatically installed in the first place?
Running debian sid. I have the Debian 2.6.32-trunk kernel installed and the liquorix kernel.
I use sgfxi to install the nvidia driver. Normally sgfxi allegedly strips out all prior nvidia, using both the nvidia uninstaller and purging any debian nvidia packages.
Today when I updated the liquorix kernel and reinstalled the drivers for the new kernel, it was still installed in the old kernel. Normally it is just installed in one kernel.

After a failed upgrade from 10.10, I went for a complete reinstall. What I'm seeing is that when I install the nvidia-current driver x / gdm doesn't seem to load. I get a blank screen for a bit, then it drops to the last lines in the terminal from loading up. I can ctr-alt-f1 to get to the first tty.

I'm running on an nvidia 295 gtx. On 10.10 with a completed updated system I saw no issues.
I tried to install drivers for my GeForce GT 630M graphic card. At first, I just installed nvidia-detect and there was a suggestion to install nvidia-driver:

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..
I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy.An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.
nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian.As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. I have a problem when i use the Nvidia driver and the latest version of Xorg (1.9.4) on Debian Sid. In fact, when i minimise a window (Nautilus, console or Chromium/Iceweasel), i see the window's black border and it's very slowly when i minimize or maximize it. I don't know how to explain correctly so i tried to take a screenshot :
In this screenshot, you can see the black border. I haven't this problem if i use the free driver for my Nvidia but i can't to play with wine I tried with the driver on experimental repositories or the driver on Nvidia Website.
xserver-common (2:1.10.4-1) was upgrade today in Sid to xserver-common (2:1.11.0-1) breaking my nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run). There is a temporary fix as showen below.

I recently switched from jessie to stretch on both i encountered a jerky ui in gnome 3. after a longer research i noticed xorg consumes over 80% of my first cpu-core while moving a window. for testing purposes i switched back to the nouveau driver and there is no high cpu usage while moving a window, also the ui is smooth.
i tried 3 different nvidia driver: the one from the debian repository, the current stable and beta driver from the nvidia site. i noticed on all 3 the same problem.

This is a fresh install of Fedora 13, the kmod-nvidia drivers were just fixed I assume cause I tried to install them for a few days and they would fail. Well I guess they finally fixed the Nvidia drivers for 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64 but it has broken amarok..

What is the best place to get an updated nVidia video driver for CentOS 5.5? Is there a CentOS package available that will update it? Or is it best to download it directly from nVidia? Also, I do not have an internet connection on the machine, so it will have to be a manual download and installation.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThere is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.
Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver?
