I've been running my shellscript for about half an hour now. It's taking longer than I thought to process all the data. I have the process ID of it. Is it possible to save the process and log out then log in and continue the process? I know how to pause a process using kill -pause pID and continue it using kill -cont pID. But that only work if you don't log out after pausing it.

using Slackware 13.0, and whenever i trasfer my files to USB, like copy or cut and paste, it will show as if file transfered in an instant, like click paste and poof.the whole 1 gig file transferred in one second, and it wont show dialog box of transfer process, and then i have to predict some minutes and wait (till the transfer actually finishes, i have to usually see my USB's transfer indicator light), if i plug out before or my prediction goes wrong, i end up with corrupted files. This aint related to window manager, as same is case for KDE and XFCE tried thunar, konqueror, midnight commander, all of em resulted with same problem.

running a large program on a remote SSH server the other day when I was disconnected. This is a large program, ~48 hours to complete, and I was disconnected around hour 40. I have restarted the program using the following (Note: I am already ssh'd into the server) ./20090427_9crossing > 20090427_9crossing.out & Now, I believe this will run the program in the background and output to the file. So, if I get disconnected again will it continue to run? If not, is there a way that I can get it to keep running?

I have written a script.
#/bin/bash
a=`du -sh /root/samplefolder | cut -f1`
echo $a > testfile
[code]....
The aim of this script is, when the folder reaches 20M then attributes will be set to that particular folder so that no newfiles and folders cannot be created or copied to that samplefolder. whenever i copy a file morethan 20M to that folder its getting copied fully and then the attributes were applied. But i dont want this to happen, when the folder reaches its maximum current write operation to that folder should be stopped automatically with a error.

I am downloading a big file on linux VPS, and I am connecting remotely via Putty to do it? Once I initiated the wget command to download the file, if I close the putty window, will wget continue to download the file in the background even though the session is technically closed?

I installed Debian 5.0.8 alongside Windows XP 64bit, and the installation went fine. However, when I choose to boot into Windows, the menu still shows the option to continue with the Debian installation. Debian was installed by burning the iso in Windows and then launching the CD rather than booting into the CD. My searches turned up with results to actually continue with the installation process, which like I said, went just fine. I want to boot right into Windows from Grub (if Windows is selected) instead of having the installation menu pop up again.

I run a headless Ubuntu file server which I access remotely via ssh or using VNC. After reboot, short of moving monitors around, is there anyway to start the GUI and continue using VNC as I normally would? I still rely on the GUI to get done what I need for the most part.

I set up a LAMP server using tasksel and it works great, but I'm not sure about much of the specifics of it. It just works and I have not had a need to find out much about it. So I was wondering if installing updates through the update manager could possible break my LAMP server and if so what types of updates should I look for that could break it?

I have configured openssh 5.8p2 with centos 5.6. My sftp is working fine with chroot environment but i am having problem with SCP. I am dealing with muliti Redhat servers. When i try to transfer data from other linux server through scp it gives connection refused. For e.g ssh 5.8 is configured on new server and i want to transfer files from old server which is using openssh 4.3 version.i created same username and password on new server as on old server. My sftp users on new server has no shell access but only sftp access. When i try to scp from old server to new server it gives error connection refused. Is the below configuration only for sftp and can't scp? According to google the configurations i found are for scp and sftp. Do i need to generate ssh keys by giving users on new server shell access, once created then stop shell access again, as i dont want to give shell access permanent for security reasons? but i want to use ssh keys for more security as well.

Having a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..
It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.

I would like to transfer files from my PC to my account at a sftp server, and I don't know how to do it.
My PC is running with:
User: User1
Address: 10.0.2.3
My sftp account is:
User: SFTPUser1
Address: sftp-server
I can access the sftp server with the command:
Code:
sftp SFTPUser1@sftp-server
The sftp server doesn't answer to ssh requests.
How can I transfer files to the sftp server?

I've been asked to upgrade and transfer an old version (1.9.3) of MediaWiki from an Apple platform to a new version (1.16.X) on a Linux (Ubuntu) platform.
Restrictions:
I cannot upgrade then transfer nor can I transfer then upgrade. It's supposed to be an import of old MediaWiki data into a new MediaWiki install. Will this go smoothly or will this be a screaming eye-clawing nightmare?
PS: Yes, I know to backup everything, before I do anything.

I have a RHEL 5 system running vsftpd. If I do a put to the box, files larger than 1 GB fail around the 1 GB point. Smaller files don't have a problem. If I do a get from the box there is no problem. Both the FTP server and client are plugged into a Netgear switch. I'm trying to create an FTP server and web server so my friends and I can upload our vacation pictures. Ultimately I want my friends to be able to access my server. Right now I'm just trying to make it work between my two machines.

I've tried to follow online tutorials about Samba PDC, I don't think I finished it well in CentOS 5.6 because when I tried to browse the profiles folder of the users in the home directory, the files doesnt appear. Actually the windows xp pc needs to restart before I can see the files, why is that? One more question, how can I transfer the profile directory from another CentOS box that will act as the storage of the roaming profile of the users? I use this in configuration smb.conf
workgroup = POGI.work
server string = Samba PDC Server
netbios name = samba
local master = yes

When trying to transfer files from my server to my desktop, the files never get fully transfered. I have windows cmd running a ping to my server, and all is fine until i try to transfer files. Some will transfer fine, and then out of nowhere the server will stop replying. I then have to restart the server to gain access to it. A 2 GB file will transfer about halfway, and then the server will not be able to be pinged. I have static IP on the server and my desktop. Running XP x64 and Ubuntu server 32-bit 9.04. Tried using Samba and NFS Exports. I have both my desktop and server connected to the same gigabit switch, and then my switch connected to my router.

setting up a basic apache webpage that would allow users to view files and folders on a server and transfer it from one directory to another? I know it doesn't sound very secure but this is an internal server so security is not a big issue as it is pretty secured in its network already. We have users that need to move files from one directory to another and we'd like to give them some intuitive interface to do this rather than having them log in to the linux system and run mv/cp commands. They are not very linux saavy.
PS: The system is running CENTOS 5.4.

I want to search for 1 file (say test.txt) on first server and all the output of this search to be greped as per my requirement and then transfered on the second server at the same location where they were on first server.
E.g.
output of search of file (test.txt) >> output.txt
/tmp/test.txt
/home/cpan/test.txt
/opt/cpanel/test.txt
Now I want to grep this output to only related to cpanel,
for f in 'cat output.txt'
echo $f | grep "cpanel"
if [ $? -eq 0 ]
then do scp.
But I am bit confused here, as in how to use scp command here.
scp $f root@second_server:/$f ?
