I was wondering if it's somehow possible to install the Live USB to an ext4 partition, this because I have a 4gb filesize limit on fat32 and that means I cannot make the casper-rw any larger. And next to that I can decently manage permissions on that.

And I tried to install fedora in the partition which was used to install ubuntu. But the installer keep telling me that ext4 partitions are not bootable. But I don't need to install a boot loader on that partition

This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

I have an external 320gb Hard drive. My plan was to have 250gb for My Documents of mainly music, films and word documents. And 50gb set aside for ubuntu, in a separate partition.To do this I need to partition the 50gb partition as ext4? then add a swap file of how big? Do i even need a swap space if I have 4gb of physical RAM?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a PC that has 10.04 installed and no other operating system. The 1 TB hard disk has two partitions:
* 940 GB NTFS for data storage
* 50GB ext4 (which has 10 GB extended and 10 GB sawp)
The system has become sluggish and slow and browsers and so on often "hang" for a few seconds prior to executing. There is an epiphany dependency problem that I cannot solve.
My questions are:
1. Is it possible to do a clean install on the 50GB partition from a live CD?
2. Is it better to do this than upgrade to 10.10 and thence to 11.04? [When I ungraded like this in the past, I had problems, so I would prefer a clean install].
3. If it is possible to do a clean install on the 50GB partition, should I reformat the partition and if so, can I do that from the live CD?
Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting
yum install e4fsprogs
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2
nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

After installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have tried countless things and am at a complete loss. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, just so everyone knows. Here's my problem: I can run the 10.10 install disc as a Live CD and have perfectly functional internet. However, when I install into a clean ext4 partition, I have zero internet support. I have Googled the heck out of this problem, too.I've tried tinkering with IPv6 settings, I've tried scouring my BIOS for anything relating to "Wake-on-LAN" (It's enabled in Windows 7, by the way, which is what I dual-boot into), and several other network-related ideas I've read online. None have had any effectEDIT: Additional details: ethernet worked like a champ in 10.04, and in 10.10 when I did an upgrade instead of a clean install. I had this same ethernet problem in a clean 11.04 install (which also worked in Live CD form), too, which is why I tried 10.04 to begin with.

I installed opensuse 11.2 some 6 months ago as an alternative to windows 7, on a 44GB partition. Having become my primary OS, I am looking forward to expand the ext4 partition from 44GB to the maximum possible. I have some 24GB unpartitioned space, and free space on NTSF partitions (one of which could be deleted if necessary). What is the best and safest procedure to perform the partitioning.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the ISO from the Ubuntu site. I can run it from the CD without any problems however, when I install it, it freezes. I am installing on a 2nd hard drive in my computer. It gets up to the point of "Creating ext4 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,1,0)(sdb)... I've tried deleting the partition and creating one by myself with no prevail. I am going to school for computer networking and my counselor told me that it'd be a good idea to learn the Linux OS for my major.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Mini 9 netbook. The SSD took a dump, so I ordered a Super Talent 16gb replacement. I put it in yesterday, tried to install 10.10 and constantly get errors. The first error, which I haven't had since, was [ERROR 30] Read-only File System. The install obviously failed. Wondering if perhaps the file got messed up in translation, I redownloaded 10.10, reformatted the flash drive (sandisk cruizer 4gb), put 10.10 back on via the program on the Ubuntu site. No luck, but no longer the [error 30]. Tried again using Unetbootin, no luck. Rinse repeat a few times, no errors just a working cursor spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and.. you get it.
Tried to put WinXP on it just because I was that frustrated, no luck.
Now I'm back to Ubuntu (because let's face it, who wants to deal with Windows, christ they make it so complicated). I'm currently using 10.04 because I was hoping (praying) it might just be a 10.10 thing.
No such luck, now it goes to step 7/7, starts, and 5% of the way thry "creating ext4 file system" it says "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." I have checked the SSD in the Disk Utility, SMART tests are clean. I have gone to terminal and run fdisk and had a smarter person than me look at the copypasta, no errors, I have deleted all existing partitions in gparted and started fresh. I have tried the auto partitioning, I have tried manual, I am going insane. Literally insane. My preschooler thinks I've leaped off the deep end.
Could it be my flash drive? Could the SSD be defective despite the tests coming back clean? What do I need to type into terminal? Is there a way to entirely entirely entirely wipe the SSD to make it fresh-out-the-box clean? I will happily provide whatever you need if it means I can get my husband off my back about this stupid netbook with its stupid tiny keyboard.
i tried to install f13 from live cd and failed. i have 2 questions. i do not understand how to setup partitions according to scottro's message. It says you need small ext3-formatted /boot partion and a ext4-formatted root partition. Does this configuration have to be setup before you boot into the live cd? If so, please tell me how to set this up. my pc is pentium d with 2 hard drives. The master hd is has xp, ubuntu8.04, and swap partitions. I would like to use one-half of the slave drive for f13.
Second question. I would like to be able to verify download of fedora-13-i686.iso. I downloaded it to my xp partition and installed Windows MD5summer. Where or how do i get the md5 file for this iso file?

I can't seem to get past step 6 of he installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I get the error: The ext4 file system creation failed... on single partition (no raid). I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. There's no other OS so I don't see any way of getting a command line to try a sudo fdisk..

Iv'e tried over and over to get past this error to no avail.
I just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.

Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.
I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to install 11.04 next to my working 10.04 system. First I need to make room for the new system so I have booted from a live cd and started GParted. In GParted the partition with the 10.04 system on it, /dev/sda1, has a red circle with an exclamation mark in it and I cannot resize it. When I doubleclick on /dev/sda1 there is the following warning

I am currently installing 11.2 on a new 1TB hdd.the opensuse installer does not allow me to create a / partition (ext4) >20GB. Does anyone know why and how I can get around this limitation?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set-up a dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04), but whenever I start the installation from a Live CD and get to the partition section it is showing that my hard-drive is has no operating system, when it in fact does. Has anyone else encountered this issue, when trying to set-up dual-booting on their system? And, if you have had this issue, what did you do to resolve it? I find it very strange, since I've never had a problem like this with any of the older releases.
