I have installed grub.efi in the ESP partition which is able to load ubuntu 9.04.I think it works with fedora 11 x64 as well. And I tried to install fedora in the partition which was used to install ubuntu. But the installer keep telling me that ext4 partitions are not bootable. But I don't need to install a boot loader on that partition

I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as the only OS on my Macbook 2,1's entire hard drive (used Live CD to reformat and install). Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. It says you need small ext3-formatted /boot partion and a ext4-formatted root partition. Does this configuration have to be setup before you boot into the live cd? If so, please tell me how to set this up. my pc is pentium d with 2 hard drives. The master hd is has xp, ubuntu8.04, and swap partitions. I would like to use one-half of the slave drive for f13.
Second question. I would like to be able to verify download of fedora-13-i686.iso. I downloaded it to my xp partition and installed Windows MD5summer. Where or how do i get the md5 file for this iso file?
I have an external 320gb Hard drive. My plan was to have 250gb for My Documents of mainly music, films and word documents. And 50gb set aside for ubuntu, in a separate partition.To do this I need to partition the 50gb partition as ext4? then add a swap file of how big? Do i even need a swap space if I have 4gb of physical RAM?

I booted into the Fedora 11 on my netbook, and used the desktop icon to install to hard-drive. I specified to use "Free space", and hit next. From there, it just stalls. The "Install Fedora" window does nothing, and I'm going on a half-hour now of nothing.
Tried three times, still nothing.
The first time I tried, I chose to replacce old linux installation (ubuntu), and when I told it to install Fedora 11 root as ext4, it said the boot can't be ext4... so I chose ext3 and it said root device must be ext4...
I live in a country where 1Mbit broadband is a premium service for large businesses. I am paying a little over $40 a month for a 128k connection with monthly capping. I want to download Fedora but the download is just huge for my connection, especially as it is used for work 14 hours a day. I have attempted the LiveCD and got the 'ext4 cannot be used for boot' error. I also have several other specialised distros on this machine and it's going to be a pain inserting a new boot partition just for Fedora.
Like it is possible with Slackware, can I just download the first CD of the Fedora 11 set and get a minimal install from this or does Fedora need the whole set of disks? Is there a simple enough net install option that I could use instead? I can't understand why they can't just release something like Ubuntu's alternate install CD.
After installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?

I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

I installed opensuse 11.2 some 6 months ago as an alternative to windows 7, on a 44GB partition. Having become my primary OS, I am looking forward to expand the ext4 partition from 44GB to the maximum possible. I have some 24GB unpartitioned space, and free space on NTSF partitions (one of which could be deleted if necessary). What is the best and safest procedure to perform the partitioning.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've recently wiped by hard drive of mac osx and installed ubuntu. My problem is that i have no proprietary drivers and i cant get internet (wired and wireless) to work. I was wondering if this problem could be due to the fact that i dont have drivers for my ethernet.
I also had a slight problem when installed ubuntu. The install itself when through fine, but after completion, i received a prompt saying that I needed to restart. after clicking ok to restart, i received a string of error, and my cd ejected. when i retstarted after that, ubuntu loaded fine, but no wired or wireless internet for me.
I've reinstalled a few times and i have the same problem. Everyone i talk to says its strange that ethernet doesnt work.
I have tried countless things and am at a complete loss. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, just so everyone knows. Here's my problem: I can run the 10.10 install disc as a Live CD and have perfectly functional internet. However, when I install into a clean ext4 partition, I have zero internet support. I have Googled the heck out of this problem, too.I've tried tinkering with IPv6 settings, I've tried scouring my BIOS for anything relating to "Wake-on-LAN" (It's enabled in Windows 7, by the way, which is what I dual-boot into), and several other network-related ideas I've read online. None have had any effectEDIT: Additional details: ethernet worked like a champ in 10.04, and in 10.10 when I did an upgrade instead of a clean install. I had this same ethernet problem in a clean 11.04 install (which also worked in Live CD form), too, which is why I tried 10.04 to begin with.
View 9 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a four partition setup: One ext4 /boot partition for Fedora, one LVM partition, one ext4 partition (which has Ubuntu), and one swap partition. What I would like to do is shrink down the ext4 partition which has Ubuntu on it and increase the size of my LVM parition (and increase the Volume Group, filesystem, etc. within the LVM). However, I've been searching on Google and the only solutions I find is to make the free/unpartitioned space and then create a new LVM partition and stretch the VG over the two LVM partitions. However, I already have 4 partitions, so I can't make the fifth one.
Is there any possible way I can increase the size of the underlying LVM partition itself?
I'm trying to set up my Fedora 15 installation to automatically mount (with all privileges needed for read/write access w/o a password prompt) an ext4 partition on the same HDD. Below is the output of sudo fdisk -l.

I tried to use pysdm, since that's what I used to do the same thing in Ubuntu, but it wasn't found by the Fedora package manager.

I downloaded the ISO from the Ubuntu site. I can run it from the CD without any problems however, when I install it, it freezes. I am installing on a 2nd hard drive in my computer. It gets up to the point of "Creating ext4 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,1,0)(sdb)... I've tried deleting the partition and creating one by myself with no prevail. It showed me a message error but i thought that it told me it wasn't abvle to do it... and now that windows is installed I cannot any more access the partition either in rescue mode and on a live cd ... what could I do to access the partition either to save all the files or to (it woiuld be the best) reinstall the grub ?

Unfortunately I can't copy 2TB data to another HD Now I have:

I'd like to install Ubuntu on it because I really love the way Ubuntu is developing and becoming much more user friendly. My use will mainly be for browsing, working with wordprocessors and maybe downloading series from torrents. My question is, should I dual boot or single boot? My personal preference is to single-boot, I just like the idea of having one OS running on the machine. What are the cons of doing that? Also, If I want to dual boot just to keep the firmware updates. How much space should I designate for Ubuntu and how much for Mac OS?
