Some times ago i add Tumbleweed repo to my Open Suse 11.3 64bit system & try to update. On every update with kernel by zypper up it make output like this

telling me if this behavior of my openSuSE 11.2 installation is normal? I use a 64-Bit openSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.x with root partition ext4. After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?

I have openSUSE 11.4 and added repro for Thumbleweed to the basic repro's.As told me I had to do a zypper dup ones for the Thumbleweed-repro to bring system up to date.
1) In KDE I do not see an update-icon in the system-tray anymore: 11.3 had one.Does this mean the auto-update function is disabled?
2) About "levels' of repro's: they are all 99, should Thumbleweed in my case be more important: say 75 ( at least <99 ) ?
3) When I use zypper up I have apps that wants updates and some are "hold back" Is this related to repro's that do refresh but not install ?
4) Someone told me NEVER mesh around with zypper DUP, so he means ONLY use zypper UP.
when I launch Yast2 - Online Update, I get an error during the repository refresh that it could refresh the repository.Since it's easier to copy-paste - here is the output from 'zypper ref' with the same error:

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

Having become my primary OS, I am looking forward to expand the ext4 partition from 44GB to the maximum possible. I have some 24GB unpartitioned space, and free space on NTSF partitions (one of which could be deleted if necessary). What is the best and safest procedure to perform the partitioning.

This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

Finally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:

It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...
Due to a power outage, my EXT4 file systems (which contain /usr and /opt) no longer mount at boot-up. They are, however, seen by disk utility in Knoppix, so I assume the data is still there and that it's just matter of making a connection to it.

I'm trying to set up my Fedora 15 installation to automatically mount (with all privileges needed for read/write access w/o a password prompt) an ext4 partition on the same HDD. Below is the output of sudo fdisk -l.

Partition table entries are not in disk order I'm trying to automount /dev/sda8, I believe. I'll check that when I've rebooted to by Ubuntu partition, 'cause that's where I know how to do it. I tried to use pysdm, since that's what I used to do the same thing in Ubuntu, but it wasn't found by the Fedora package manager.
I am dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 with ext4 and OS X with hfs+, and I'm getting tired of having to go through Open Firmware, rEFIt, and GRUB to boot to Ubuntu by default. I've done a lot of digging, and my results appear to be inconclusive. I have, however, been able to hypothesize that the reason that I cannot set my ext4 partition as the Startup Disk (via OS X settings) is because OS X does not know how to read ext4. I believe that the Startup Disk settings work by writing to Open Firmware, so I'm thinking that maybe something else would be able to as well, preferably something that is capable of reading ext4.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed the new 2.6.34.4-0.1 security update earlier today. Now, the login screen no longer responds to my keyboard. In particular, I cannot type my password to log in. If I reboot into failsafe mode, the keyboard works and I can log in.
I'm running 11.3 on a white MacBook 4,1.
I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting
yum install e4fsprogs
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2
nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

As the title says. System is openSUSE 11.1 running KDE3.5 with KDE4.3 also installed to use desktop effects in KDE3.5. After update X uses 90% CPU to scroll down a page in FF, OOo or even in text editor, either with KWin and KWin4. With KWin4 desktop effects can't be enabled in system config.

Rolling back to kernel 2.6.27.37 fixed the problem.
After the lastest update 11.2 also suffers from the problem already reported here for 11.3. I am lucky to have two linux partitions and was actualy able to boot into the second partition. From this second system I could repair this or at least a quick-n-dirty fallback to be able to boot.
1. Copied the 2.6.21.12-0.2 version for initrd and vmlinuz from /boot to /first_partition/boot
2. Copied the /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst.old to /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst to reset to the old menu.
After boot the system could start but modules were not loaded.
3. copied /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop from the second partition to the first.
4. The same for /usr/src/linux-2.6.31.12-0.2*
Now my system will boot and start modules such as network and sound. Still, was this correct? I don't know for sure if there are some issues that I haven't discovered yet. And obviously, what will happen with future updates (either kernel or other)?
I'm trying to figure out how to update the kernel in 11.4 from the repository. I have the stable repo added, but i'm not sure how to get it updated.

After upgrading kernel, system (AMD 780G)refuses to start in graphic mode. Computer services running fine, but there's nothing or some trash on screen when X started. And no way how to get out except restarting or shutting down from remote computer.
Reinstalling, unistalling ATI driver doesn't help. Also manipulations with xorg.conf (install, safe etc previous file versions)doesn't help.
Sax2 detects videocard correctly, but result is same regardless which resolution@Hz is specified.

the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

I installed kdump and activated it with the Yast module. I'm collecting dump files, now. But I'm not sure what to do with does files.
