I have an external 320gb Hard drive. My plan was to have 250gb for My Documents of mainly music, films and word documents. And 50gb set aside for ubuntu, in a separate partition.To do this I need to partition the 50gb partition as ext4? then add a swap file of how big? Do i even need a swap space if I have 4gb of physical RAM?
View 4 RepliesI have a PC that has 10.04 installed and no other operating system. The 1 TB hard disk has two partitions:
* 940 GB NTFS for data storage
* 50GB ext4 (which has 10 GB extended and 10 GB sawp)
The system has become sluggish and slow and browsers and so on often "hang" for a few seconds prior to executing. There is an epiphany dependency problem that I cannot solve.
My questions are:
1. Is it possible to do a clean install on the 50GB partition from a live CD?
2. Is it better to do this than upgrade to 10.10 and thence to 11.04? [When I ungraded like this in the past, I had problems, so I would prefer a clean install].
3. If it is possible to do a clean install on the 50GB partition, should I reformat the partition and if so, can I do that from the live CD?
I want to install from scratch or change a current system, which ever works best to have the following partitions: I have a 160GB HD and want a 50GB root partition 3 GB swap and the rest for home. When i go throught the guided partitioning process the largest i can get is 8GB. The root partition is the bootable partition correct?

Will the system automatically set the system and mount volume sizes? If not can I have some tips on manually using the 50 gb to set it up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu via the windows executable and I couldn't mount my NTFS partition. I found this a little odd and I checked fdisk and it seems to think I don't have an ext4 partition as my entire internal HD is displayed as NTFS.
Here's the fdisk output:
When i try to mount the NTFS partition /dev/sda2 i get the following output:
I can't make heads or tails out of this. Anyone know what's going on here?
Windows recognizes that 30GB were taken from the NTFS partition for my linux install. It reads the max partition size as 465GB. fstab reports the NTFS partition size as 488GB.
I have Ubuntu (command line only) installed as a part of XBMC Live installation. My disk is 1TB that's currently partitioned like this:
10GB root
2GB swap
950GB media
Is there a way to split the existing 950GB partition into two (900GB and 50GB) without altering or moving the data that's currently on it?
I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

I was wondering if it's somehow possible to install the Live USB to an ext4 partition, this because I have a 4gb filesize limit on fat32 and that means I cannot make the casper-rw any larger. And next to that I can decently manage permissions on that.

nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

I have a Dell Mini 9 netbook. The SSD took a dump, so I ordered a Super Talent 16gb replacement. I put it in yesterday, tried to install 10.10 and constantly get errors. The first error, which I haven't had since, was [ERROR 30] Read-only File System. The install obviously failed. Wondering if perhaps the file got messed up in translation, I redownloaded 10.10, reformatted the flash drive (sandisk cruizer 4gb), put 10.10 back on via the program on the Ubuntu site. No luck, but no longer the [error 30]. Tried again using Unetbootin, no luck. Rinse repeat a few times, no errors just a working cursor spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and.. you get it.
Tried to put WinXP on it just because I was that frustrated, no luck.
Now I'm back to Ubuntu (because let's face it, who wants to deal with Windows, christ they make it so complicated). I'm currently using 10.04 because I was hoping (praying) it might just be a 10.10 thing.
No such luck, now it goes to step 7/7, starts, and 5% of the way thry "creating ext4 file system" it says "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." I have checked the SSD in the Disk Utility, SMART tests are clean. I have gone to terminal and run fdisk and had a smarter person than me look at the copypasta, no errors, I have deleted all existing partitions in gparted and started fresh. I have tried the auto partitioning, I have tried manual, I am going insane. Literally insane. My preschooler thinks I've leaped off the deep end.
Could it be my flash drive? Could the SSD be defective despite the tests coming back clean? What do I need to type into terminal? Is there a way to entirely entirely entirely wipe the SSD to make it fresh-out-the-box clean? I will happily provide whatever you need if it means I can get my husband off my back about this stupid netbook with its stupid tiny keyboard.
I have installed grub.efi in the ESP partition which is able to load ubuntu 9.04.I think it works with fedora 11 x64 as well. And I tried to install fedora in the partition which was used to install ubuntu. But the installer keep telling me that ext4 partitions are not bootable. But I don't need to install a boot loader on that partition

It says you need small ext3-formatted /boot partion and a ext4-formatted root partition. Does this configuration have to be setup before you boot into the live cd? If so, please tell me how to set this up. my pc is pentium d with 2 hard drives. The master hd is has xp, ubuntu8.04, and swap partitions. I would like to use one-half of the slave drive for f13.
Second question. I would like to be able to verify download of fedora-13-i686.iso. I downloaded it to my xp partition and installed Windows MD5summer. Where or how do i get the md5 file for this iso file?

This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

I can't seem to get past step 6 of he installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I get the error: The ext4 file system creation failed... on single partition (no raid). I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. There's no other OS so I don't see any way of getting a command line to try a sudo fdisk..

Unable to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a new internal harddrive. The hardrive contains no operating system. This hardrive is the only drive present in the system.

Iv'e tried over and over to get past this error to no avail.
I was resizing my ext4 partition and I cancelled it while it was at the reading stage think it was only reading it and nothing else, but now it is corrupt.
When I run 'fsck -n /dev/sda5' I get the error:

View 6 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have a four partition setup: One ext4 /boot partition for Fedora, one LVM partition, one ext4 partition (which has Ubuntu), and one swap partition. What I would like to do is shrink down the ext4 partition which has Ubuntu on it and increase the size of my LVM parition (and increase the Volume Group, filesystem, etc. within the LVM). However, I've been searching on Google and the only solutions I find is to make the free/unpartitioned space and then create a new LVM partition and stretch the VG over the two LVM partitions. However, I already have 4 partitions, so I can't make the fifth one.
Is there any possible way I can increase the size of the underlying LVM partition itself?
Still a novice in Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I'm trying to mount an ext4 20GB partition of my hard drive so that i can use it to store data, i want it to appear on my desktop as well as on places, as far as i know this is achieved by mounting the partition in /media. At my first attempt i used the following commands. (i named the partition ondskapt)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently updated my ubuntu 9.10 install to 10.04. And with that I've tried to install snow leopard on my computer so i can dual boot between them.the install was successful, but grub2 (that worked fine) wouldn't see the OS X install on its own partition. so i tried reinstalling it, like you do after you install windows and it would remove grub as the bootloader.That didn't work and i got a lot of messages that it wouldnt work because my partitioning (or something like that) is GPT. by the end of it i didn't have grub installed at all!so i started playing around with GParted, and while doing that i also put a bios_grub flag on my main ubuntu install partition, thinking that it would force grub to load from that partition. But that just gave me the GRUB Rescue prompt when trying to boot.
So i unchecked the bios_grub flag. and now it doesn't boot to anywhere and when inserting the ubuntu live cd i cant even see the ubuntu ext4 partition and mount it.Gparted says that its a partition that its File System is undetectable and unknown.Is there any solution that will allow me just to mount that partition and copy files from it? (unfortunatelly my backups are a little older than i would like them to be)Heres what boot info script gives me: (the partition that i need is sda1)
