OpenSUSE Install :: 11.0 - Cannot Increase Ext4 Partition Size

I have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?

I'm having a problem with GParted. I'm trying to increase the size of an ext4 partition but the maximum is set to 9970 MiB. The option to increase its size is greyed out. How can I fix this?

I have nearly 200GB of space free on the HD with my linux main EXT4 partition, and I'm wondering if I can convert a large part of this to a new NTFS partition that I can use for my windows XP paralell install?
Basically, what do I have to do to resize and create the new partition and how do I get windows to recognize it?

I would like to increase the size of my root partition on OpenSuse 11.3. Currently, I have 11.3 installed on a dual boot laptop with Windows 7. My partitions look as follows:-

As can be observed above, I have used almost 70% of the available partition space with only 1.7 GB remaining. I have plans to install Microsoft Office 2007 on Wine and I know that 1.7 GB is not enough for the installation. I don't mind reducing the size of my Windows partitions in order to increase the size of the root.

I have setup my opensuse 11.3 machine w/ LVM support for everything but boot. I have the following disks:
/dev/sda1 - 70.57 MB /boot
/dev/sda2 - 5.81 GB back up for original windows
/dev/sda3 - 292.21 GB LVM group.
When I attempt to resize the 70.57 MB partition, it tells me that 70.57 mb is the max that this partition can be. This was true even during the install

I have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive. One of these partitions has been divided into 3 logical partitions with some free space left over. The order is this: "swap", "/", "/home", and about 80GB of unallocated space. I want to incorporate that unallocated space into the home partition. I tried this by booting a live CD and starting GParted but it didn't give me the option to increase the size of my home partition or the primary partition as a whole. The only thing it would let me do is decrease the size of my home partition.

Is it possible to increase the size of a partition that is using LVM?I have 5GB of unpartitioned and unallocated space on my disk. I wish to add this to my VG. This free space is physically before the LVM partition.Can I increase the size of the physical partition using pvresize? Or is the only way to to create a new 5GB partition, add it to the VG and allocate it to the LVs? This is not ideal as I wish to minimise the number of partitions I have on the one disk.

I have installed ubuntu in my 500GB passport drive. The ubuntu partition size is 120GB. I want to increase the root partition size because i ran out of disk space for "/" I have installed Gparted and accidentally created new partition table. Then all my disk space turned into unallocated space. So, i immateriality rebooted my system. Then, I am not able to boot into the drive. Moreover it is not detecting in windows too. How to undone that "MISTAKE" ??

I copied 10.4 from a 20gig hd. onto an 80 gig hd with Clonezilla and now I can't get Gparted to expand the partition to include the 50 gig that is unallocated. Obviously I cloned the drive incorrectly.

I have a dual boot machine ( win 7 & Ubuntu 10.04 ) which is reporting insufficient space on the Linux partition. I boot up into gparted and reduce the size of the the preceding partition but when I try to increase the size of the following ( linux ) partition, it won't allow it. I have booted up in a Gparted system disk. I'm trying to use Gparted to resize my current linux partition. It sits on a one HDD with another Windows partition.I have delete the windows partition (626GB) and now want to resize my linux partition to use all this unallocated space. When trying to resize the linux partition (293GB) I am not able to do so. No space is shown to be available to use. I can only make the partition smaller. Can anyone think of why I won't be able to increase my linux partition to use this now unallocated space?

I have a server setup running VirtualBox and several Windows guests. I'm running the box headless and start the windows machines using

via SSH session from my MacBookPro in terminal. I then connect to the Virtual Machines running MS Remote Desktop from the MacBookPro. All of this works perfectly except that I've run out of space on my partition for Virtual Machines and need to create a few more. I have plenty of room on the HDD but when first installing Ubuntu Server I only partitioned and formated about 1/4 of the drive. Is it possible to run a command in my SSH session at the command line to partition the unused portion of the HDD, format it, and expand my current partition into that space? Or, do I have to use something like gpartedlive, boot from the CD and do the partitioning?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my 80gb hdd, disk has following partitions :
1. /dev/sda1 = /boot (500mb)
2. /dev/sda2 = / (20000mb)
3. /dev/sda3 = linux-swap (2000mb)
4. /dev/sda4 = extended (7000mb)

How does one back up the oses and increase the partition size?
I have a dual boot of Windows 7 and Ubuntu and have made the partitions for each too small. I want to save them and then reinstall them on the new partitions. I've tried clonezilla, but it only restores them to the original partitions. How can I reinstall them on the new partitions?

Mis-allocated 10g instead of 30g to /var/lib/mysql and realized mistake After Fresh Install and upgraded all servers. Using Slackware13.1, Xfce did some googling wondering if its possible to resize the above partition with fdisk. Read some things about gparted and wonder if it will work using Xfce.. i've never use kde or gnome. There is also mention of using live cd; I have no experience with any of the mentioned tools; just fdisk to partition and install. What is the best or simplest way to backup & restore; (I do have an empty sdb 160g but don't want to get into complicated raid or LVM setups right now because I still have to learn howto backup & restore do data to the point where I feel comfortable with it)?
Current setup: sda 160gb Hdd used 73.5 for following partitions: sda1 512m /boot; sda2 Extended Rest of Hdd; sda5 1280m /swap; sda6 8g /home; sda7 2g /; sda8 8g /usr; sda9 8g /usr/local; sda10 10g /var; sda11 10g /var/log; *sda12 10g instead of 30g /var/lib/mysql; sda13 10g /opt; sda14 5g /tmp Haven't configure mysql... so /dev/sda12 is empty except for system disk data the same goes for /dev/sda13 /opt & /dev/sda14 /tmp

After installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.

I have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

I installed opensuse 11.2 some 6 months ago as an alternative to windows 7, on a 44GB partition. Having become my primary OS, I am looking forward to expand the ext4 partition from 44GB to the maximum possible. I have some 24GB unpartitioned space, and free space on NTSF partitions (one of which could be deleted if necessary). What is the best and safest procedure to perform the partitioning.

I am not sure this is the right forum, its more about partitions, but it is a bit like it. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit.When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.
