Ubuntu Installation :: Old Notebook HP Pavillion Ze2000 Fail 10.04 Lucid Install?

Searching for one week at the forum, sorry if i missed any posts about my issue,
My specs:
Microprocessor1.4 GHz Intel Celeron M Processor 360
Microprocessor Cache1MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB
Memory256MB 400MHz DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)
Video GraphicsIntel Extreme Graphics 2 (shared)

Today i used the mini CD command-line install, got the system running at the terminal, but installing xorg or gnome and rebooting results again in fail. Tried to edit xorg.conf through nano, after sudo apt-get install but before reboot, but was fail again (couldn't open the file). I dont know exactly if its the gnome or the X the issue, because i tried at the same notebook the ubuntu 8.04, the wallpaper pops up but it freezes after, i cannot use the X. Both cd's are checksum valid originals from canonical
is there any ways to install gnome and x in the terminal, edit the xorg.conf with anything that solve the problem and reboot? update 23:11PM: I found it, its a issue with old intel graphic cards. i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa in the boot parameters and i could use the installer in the lucid live cd. but now i need to edit the grub to always boot with this parameter.

I've been running Lucid since it dropped. Decided to upgrade my NVIDIA 6600gt graphics card to the newest driver I found at the website. Installation went flawless. But after reboot, I got this:

I've spent the past 2 days attempting to get the sound working on a Toshiba A75 notebook. Here is what i've tried so far:
remove/purge alsa and pulse audio then reinstall
set up/configure OSS
download and compile latest alsa drivers. code...
My questions are: is there anyone using this laptop on Lucid with sound? Can anyone provide a new idea how to make this work if it is compatible hardware.

I tried the 10.04 livecd and it doesnt boot eiter, it stops in busybox prompt with error: "Could not mount /dev/loop1 on /cow" or something like that. Before 9.10 was functioning perfectly.
My computer is Asus 1201N: [url]

I've just downloaded ubuntu server 10.04.1 and put it on my usb flashdisk, the installation works fine until the point, where it tries to install grub. The thing is, that the installer is trying to write the grub to /dev/sda (which is my usb flashdisk) and not the raid itself.I'm using a fakeraid intel ich9r, which maps the newly created storage to /dev/mapper/isw_ecdhgaacgh_Volume0.Why doesn't install use that instead? It sees it, partitions it, even copies files to.

I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.

My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

I recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.
After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.
Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.
I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.

Clean install.
Appeared to work fine.
Restart after install OK.
Ran Update Manager:
It started work on some 300-odd updates, But froze when "Applying Changes" to the following package:
libc6-dev. It was "Preparing to configure" libc6-dev, But couldn't get any further. The Update Manager window said it was at this point: "Security Updates - User-space parcer utility for AppArmor" Total freeze-up.
Forced restart.
Got to password screen OK.
Then to blank screen:
[code].....
This is all most unfortunate. The computer belongs to someone I know. They were getting fed up with their other operating system. I suggested Ubuntu. I've got their laptop on a promise to set them up with Ubuntu. I don't have long. They need it quickly. I may have no choice but to give it back to them with their old operating system on it. Won't be any skin off their nose.

I am installing from the scratch a 11.3 on a PC on which previously 11.1 did run flawlessly. (Athlon 3700 with 3GB ram and Asrock socket 939 mainboard. Graphics is Nvidia. The installation comes every time up to 90% when it arrives at "font initialization). No error message is displayed. The little "cursor wheel" is still turning but else, there is no activity.
DVD from an sha1 checked and MD5 doublechecked download was burned with lowest speed in K3b and verified by the same program post burn, with full success of every verification.
Tried to change DVD reader but does not change the result. Runs speedy up to that step.

I tried out many distros on my desktop before experimenting with my oshiba Satellite A665 laptop with integrated intel graphics. Everything worked out as normal until I was testing Ubuntu on a live cd, I clicked install and it sent me back to the login screen before I had made an account. So I then chose to restart and it started glitching so I had to manually power off. Ever since then whichever distros I try to install, they face numerous errors. On Ubuntu and Peppermint they freeze on the 5 dots installation part and Linux Mint just has a permanent black screen. Even the current Peppermint OS (only distro i have)hangs on the 5 dots when trying to boot onto the computer. This has resulted me in a computer that cant do anything, i've tried the noquiet and nosplash options but they don't seem to work. I was thinking of installing Windows and maybe erasing the disk by installing another distro later?

Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.
Here's the cpu-z report for the laptop if that's any help: report.txt

When you install Ubuntu, you will typically install a complete desktop environment. It is also possible to install a minimal set of software (just enough to boot your machine) and then manually select the precise software applications to install. Such a "custom" install is usually favoured by server administrators, who prefer to keep only the software they absolutely need on the server.
I have never personally noticed any sections in the install to allow you to do a custom minimal install, is this possible in Lucid? If so how, or do I need to download just a mini install iso?

I upgraded to Lucid from Jaunty on a 3 1/2 year old toshiba Satellite by doing a clean install. There is no sound anywhere. I had no sound problems with Jaunty. I ran the alsa upgrade script from this site:
[URL]
There was no change I could see after this was done.
In sound preferences>
hardware--there are no entries;
input--the input volume is shaded
output--the entry is Dummy Output stereo
The alsamixer shows only the pcm control, there are no capture controls. In select sound card (F6) I selected HDA ATI SB (default was only other choice). I have Linux Mint 9 (based on Lucid) on a Dell mini-9 and the sound works.

I'm trying to install Lucid to an older PC, but it constantly freezes during the setup. Most of the time I can't even select whether I want to install or to try the OS, but sometimes I get past that. Once I got to the point where the installation was copying the files to the hard drive, but it froze once again at 5%. The PC's config is: 1,8 GHz AMD processor, 768 MB DDR1 memory, 200 GB HDD, ATI 9200 VGA and a DVD drive. According to the minimum reqs for lucid this should be more than enough, yet Lucid froze once while in Live CD mode. Should I try an older ubuntu version? Or could this be something more serious, ie hardware issue in which case you guys can't help.

After having my Ubuntu 9.10 for more than 2 months and being so happy about it, it has suddenly collapsed. I do not know if collapse is the best word to describe it but it looks like but hopefully has not.
It happened like this: I switched off the computer before leaving for a 10 days trip and no problems. When I came back and switched on the computer but it was impossible to start. The screen first showed the following message:
Mount of file system failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL D will terminate this shell and re-try.
root@pablo-laptop:~#
I force the laptop to switch off and switch it on again. It gave me options to initialize under different versions of Karmic Koala but none work. (It gave me the option of making a memory (or file system, I do not remember well) test which I did and says there was no problem). In all the cases it went back to the message above.
I tried Control + D but again nothing. It displayed a page of information of which I write a part of it:
[Code]....
To see all the info after Control + D you can see the attachement (althoug not too clear)
If you can not see well the picture and the info on it I can try to make it better or transcript it.

I'm having some problems installing Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on my laptop - I tried first using the CD but selecting 'Install Ubuntu' from the menu did nothing at all so I'm using wubi instead. The initial wubi install was fine but attempting to boot into Ubuntu initial setup results in lock up. Booting without the graphic workaround option gets as far as: agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xC0000000.However with the workaround it gets further and the final log output is:set up 63M of stolen space.

Decided to try out Ubuntu instead of automatically getting the next Windows OS.
I have a Dell Dimension E310 with on board video card (will be relevant soon, I think).
After trying making my own CD and not being able to at least run the LiveCD (thought it was my fault even thought the MD5 #'s matched correctly), I went to Shipit and got a CD delivered of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). When I put the CD into my computer while running windows, the CD is not recognized, which seems strange to me. When I put the same CD into my work laptop (note that both computers are running XP), I can see the contents of the CD. Decide that it might not be an issue and restart the computer in the hope of booting from the CD. CD is never recognized and looking at the bootmenu, it has USB-cdRom at the top of the list.
More information: CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz. I don't believe it is a 64bit computer but I can't verify that. I mention this because I believe the CD I got is the 32bit version and that it should be sufficient but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone else knew something.

I want to install Ubuntu Server distro. First i downloaded ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso and "burned" it to my usb-pen using UltraIso software for windows. That booted from the usb, but just after punshing in the language etc it complains that it cant find the cdrom or something like that. then i try the [url], but that wont boot at all with this same iso mentioned above. and burn it to a darn CD. it boots, but somewhere during the process it stops and asks for the same cd that is actually in the drive already. there is a thread about this here: [url] I then wanted to find an easy iso that i could throw on my usb-pen and install the whole thing through ftp like i did in the old days with floppies. but man, i got lost in the documentation with no clear path on how to do it.
