I have a Toshiba Laptop, that I only use now for I-Tunes, and I-Pod.I would like to install Ubuntu on it to play around with, and experiment.Do I have to install Notebook Remix, or can I just install the regular Ubuntu 9.10 on it?

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the Ubuntu Remix on a laptop that doesn't have an Atom processor? I have a small form-factor laptop, but it isn't a Netbook, that I would love to install Ubuntu Remix on, but for some reason it hangs when I try and install it. Does anyone know if it is possible to install this release on a standard laptop? Are there links somewhere that I could follow?
View 5 Replies View Relatedi updated tis morning to 10.04 on a compaq netbook and only problem is that the system minimizes all windows.... Can't kee a window on top for more than 2 secs. It seems that all is ok,any program i klick runs but it immediatly minimizes and won't stay open. I cant do anything,i have to type one character at a time.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI needed to switch from Win7 starter to Ubuntu 10.10 remix netbook edition) as Win 7 became more disappointing than it even was I'm praising Ubuntu for many things but having one issue: unable to detect my CD/DVD USB connected external drive, hence impossible to load any software that I was hoping to use with my netbook. ve read on Internet that it apperas to be a bug in the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook version - has anyone have any solution to this problem? I'm willing to experiment a bit as I'm in a desperation to get my software going! cheers

View 8 Replies View Relateddo you have any suggestions how I can install Ubuntu netbook edition on an old Laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 2131) currently running Windows 2000 with all servicepacks (if I recall correctly it is SP5) without boot-support for USB-Stick/Media, CD-ROM, PXE/netboot; booting is only supported from builtin harddisk and from floppy-disk drive, which is definitely broken. (with working floppy disk drive all would be fine). I also installed WUBI, but the harddisk is only 4 GB, so I had to use the USB-Stick as the Ubuntu install partition and this is not supported by the Laptop as it cannot boot from it.
Has anybody an idea, is it viable to online-resize an NTFS-partition to create a small linux-partition for bootstrapping the install?? I do not want to, it's still useful, so when crashing the NTFS-filesystem is likely I prefer not to take this route and leave the laptop with Win2k installed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOld hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

I have tried several times installing ubuntu netbook remix on my netbook and have followed guides step by step but it dosn't work (screen goes black, flashing hyphen). Only thing i might be doing wrong is using an external 320gb hdd that i had previously formated to fat32 instead of a usb pendrive. Is this the problem, note i dont have a pendrive large enough.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have done a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04. My HP ProBook 4520s notebook computer exhibits the following problem. I use the notebook with lid closed, connected to Samsung SyncMaster P2350 23" LCD Monitor. When Ubuntu boots it selects 1024 x 768 resolution. I then go into the display settings and notice that it is set to display the same image on both monitors. If I uncheck this setting, I see the Samsung and can make changes to the resolution settings of both laptop monitor and Samsung monitor, however, when I click Apply, the Samsung I am viewing goes blank. If I then open the laptop lid, it too is blank. After a cold reboot, I am able to get the Samsung monitor to act as a desktop estension perfectly, but not as the only monitor with the laptop screen turned off. Any attempt to turn off the laptop monitor in the settings results in no screen at all.
In the office, I have an LG 19" Flatron monitor, and Ubuntu does not exhibit the same problem. I can boot up with lid closed, and the Flatron works fine as the only monitor and at it's native resolution all by itself. Booting with lid open, and then closing the lid, also results in the Samsung going blank, but probably for the reason that there is no option in power management to DO NOTHING when the Lid is closed.
It seems that Ubuntu have forgotten about people who use their laptops as desktops in this way. I am not happy to run with the laptop open and split screens, as I cannot get the launcher into the Samsung, and everything has to be moved over all the time, is there any work around that anyone may know about?
The HP ProBook uses Intel Graphics, for which there are no particular additional drivers I am told. The problem also happened in Ubuntu 10.10, but before 10.10 I don't recall ever having this problem (from 7.04 thru 10.04)
I just found out that jobs -l and man jobs produce no output in my terminal. how could I fix that? How could I install jobs command and its manual on my ubuntu 10.10 ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedHave downloaded the image twice now and burned it to CD twice. This is a brand new HP 6530b. It will boot to the CD and come up with the ubuntu install menu. I can arrow up and down, but when I press enter on any entry nothing happens. The CD will spin momentarily but then stop. Been trying to make this work for two weeks.
