I've bougt a new pc (i5-2050k, Nvidia GeForce 560Ti) and wanted to install Linux beside Windows.But each Linux-distribution (exept the old ones from Mandriva) fails installing/starting als livecd/checking for installation errors/..... while initiating udev.Is there any known bugfix for this problem? Remind, there is just Windows, so don't give me any shellcode to execute
View 5 RepliesI have a repeatable and annoying problem that seems to be connected with the graphics card driver of nvidea. I had another card before (7900 card) and I have after having had a malfunction now a nvidea 430. Mainboard Gygabyte with AMD 790 Chipset, GB Ram. The opensuse system is fully patched and updated, newest kernel but the same error occurred with another graphic card and with the precedent kernel and with the precedent nvidia video driver.
Now, the problem is as follows:

I installed 11.3 first as update from 11.2. The later described error occured.My first approach was to install 11.3 as full install from scratch, the following error did not disappear.System boots fine when doing boot option "confirm" and answer "no" to haldaemon service. Subsequently no usb devices are recognized by the system.
If i do not skip the haldaemon, either in normal as in failsafe mode,haldaemon reports a "NULL Pointer dereference", which is repeated very often.The system finally stops booting, the screen is full with the following three lines, which seemed to be repeated for about a minute.

i removed old unused hardware, as i read in a older thread, that this was the cause for a boot up failure with the haldaemon, but nothing changed.
I want to try the new 11.1. When I start the installation (x86_64 DVD), the startup is hanging. The last message is "Starting udev...". Keyboard is completely frozen, only reset button is working. Mobo is an Intel DG965WH with 4GB RAM and ATI Graphic card (ASUS1950pro). My opensuse 11.0 runs without any problems.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am installing from the scratch a 11.3 on a PC on which previously 11.1 did run flawlessly. (Athlon 3700 with 3GB ram and Asrock socket 939 mainboard. Graphics is Nvidia. The installation comes every time up to 90% when it arrives at "font initialization). No error message is displayed. The little "cursor wheel" is still turning but else, there is no activity.
DVD from an sha1 checked and MD5 doublechecked download was burned with lowest speed in K3b and verified by the same program post burn, with full success of every verification.
Tried to change DVD reader but does not change the result. Runs speedy up to that step.
On boot, udev is giving a mount error. It appears to not have control of the /dev directory. This was finally traced to bad kernel compile, but some questions remain. Bogus information has been removed.
The kernel was built with tmpfs (CONFIG file had CONFIG_TMPFS, compiled kernel probably did not, this has been fixed.)
My system runs, probably because there is a valid /dev directory tree copied from the original 2.4.31 system.
After boot, I am getting 3 udevd running, according to "ps -A".
After re-executing /etc/rc.d/rc.udev I see only one udevd at a low id number (625).
Previously I had 2.4.31, which had udev and it was mounting using ramfs.

I have been running Slackware since 1996. This is Slackware 13.1, running on a Sempron/Athlon K8, VIA chipsets. I have been fighting with this install for 2 weeks now. If I have to I will disable udev and live with a /dev directory that I setup by hand.
If udev does not have a tmpfs over the top of /dev, does it use the /dev on the harddrive or does it just fail some other way ?
I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Early 2008 Macbook Pro and am trying to initiate some form of right click functionality. A mapped key is fine. Apple's ctrl+click is fine too. I do use a usb or bluetooth mouse quite often, but I really need right click functionality for those times that I just grabbed the laptop and ran with it.
I've browsed the forums, ran into a couple of solutions, but they were a bit older and I could not get them to work properly. Also a hindrance here is my relative unfamiliarity with Linux/Ubuntu.
During the boot process the machine (Fujitsu Celsius M470) hangs about 4 min at udev:loading drivers. After that it continues and I can work with the OpenSuse 11.2 system without problems.I activated the debug log in /etc/udev/udev.confthen I see that it is doing a lot in that time, at the end I see the message:udevadm settle timeout queue contains: a long list of pci/usb entries (no entries in any log for this)

Boot from DVD 11.4 586 32 bit is fine. Loads up and offers me install, boot from HD, check media, firmware etc. Select text output, no acpi, check media. Linux kernel loads, then black screen showing progress in white text.
At "Starting udev..." process hangs. Eventually (several minutes later) message is returned about "worker" not able to read from "sr0" which I believe is the DVD drive which it has been using to this point.
I'm running 11.3 normally, udev is not a problem on boot from HD. The DVD media works fine on a Windows laptop showing "Starting udev... ok" and continues. Media checks ok on this machine.
I'm thinking that no matter what medium I use to install from, HD, DVD, net etc this udev problem is going to hit me again unless there is a hint I can pass to the bootup process.
After reading about other experiences with this issue I removed all the non-standard hardware and no difference. The DVD drive seems to be the issue. Bootup is already using it, and yet udev cannot find it.
So ... right now I'm having an issue after I installed ATI Catalyst 10.8 for my GPU HD 5770.Every time I try to boot, it sends me to init3 (I mean text screen). But when I check and try to switch to init5, it tells me that I'm on init5 already.And I'm still stuck on the text screen. However, safemode is still working (yeah I'm on it right now - -").

GNOME and KDE are selected as GUI session.At the login screen, in Session list I saw TWM, and after selected it as login session I couldnt login, and login screen disappear as well. It shows a black screen and the mouse pointer, and I have no idea how to switch to KDE or GNOME since no login screen.

There are also two siblings at the "Contrib" directory level ("Live" and "Update:") and there are no files under them either other than a single subdirectory called "Test" under "Update:". Does anyone know if the updates that used to be available in this repository have moved and, if so, where to? If the repository is no longer required and there is no replacement, I'll simply remove it. I have also noticed issues for several months where the updater applet will go into an "updating" state and never return from it.

I stupidly overwrote the log file without backing it up. It had a lot of compile warnings, but I didn't see anything that looked like a compile error. I'll try to generate it again.
I am trying to install opensuse 11.2 as DomU on a Host running also opensuse 11.2. When I use a file as destination everything goes well and the installation finishes with success. But when i install the DomU on an LV (Logical volume) with Yast, once the installation finished and the DomU restarts, I get the Error "Boot Loader didn't return any data"
I mounted the LV and I verified the presence of /boot/vmlinuz-xen, /boot/inirtd-xen, menu/lst etc ....

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed.The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I don´t. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.
After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.
Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.
I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?
I've just downloaded ubuntu server 10.04.1 and put it on my usb flashdisk, the installation works fine until the point, where it tries to install grub.The thing is, that the installer is trying to write the grub to /dev/sda (which is my usb flashdisk) and not the raid itself.I'm using a fakeraid intel ich9r, which maps the newly created storage to /dev/mapper/isw_ecdhgaacgh_Volume0.Why doesn't install use that instead? It sees it, partitions it, even copies files to.
View 5 Replies View RelatedEarly in the boot process, system generates message "Creating nodes with udev." After a pause, CPU timeout dumps are listed on the display. Likely it is related to wthe display driver (Intel 845G) as the system can be brought up in failsafe mode. /etc/X11.conf is intact. The system was apparently successfully upgraded online from 11.3 using the zypper method. This issue has appeared a day following the upgrade, after restarting the 11.4 system.

I had problems with hard disk failing and bad block informations in smartctl and palimpsest.
After several avaliations a concluded that apps don't show smart informations if a hard disk partition is monted.
When i boot with livecd it shows a failure in the hard disk, but in monted system dont.
I have installed openSUSE with Gnome3.
I had to install the nVidia proprietary drives so the OS would boot into Gnome3 and not fail safe mode. Without the proprietary drivers installed the display settings said:

After installing the nVidia drivers Gnome3 works in one monitor, but I would like to be able to use my other two monitors (totaling three with two video cards.)
When I run nvidia-settings to generate an xorg.conf file it hangs, so I used nvidia-xorgconf to generate the xorg file and then used nvidia-settings to configure my extra screens.
This fails with a permissions error, running sudo nvidia-settings fails with the following error:

So, I ran nvidia-settings, saved the settings file to my /home/$USER dir, then copied xorg.conf to /etc/X11/
Logging out and logging back into Gnome fails with the error:
This problem extends to Ubuntu running Gnome3, so my thinking is:
a) Imma id10t and something in my xorg.conf file is wrong,
b) there is an issue with Gnome3/nVidia/Multiple displays.
I would really like to use Gnome3, it works on multiple other machines (ironically all ATI devices) just not the machine I use all day long...

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.
I try to install Fedora 12 from CD.

View 4 Replies View Relatedwhere the install hangs at the "Starting udev..." and nothing seems to be able to get the system to run the install. I have tried starting the install with edd=off, apci=off, noapic, apci=ht, and a variety of other options listed on posts. I have tried versions 11.0, 11.1, 11.2, and 10.2 with no success with any of these. With 10.2 it does not hard lock the system so I am able to Alt-F4 to see some debugging info and I am getting the following "it[1] trap divide error rip:2b6b0c281123 rsp:7fff9e95fdf0 error 0". With any of the version 11 installs the system completely hard locks with "Starting udev..." I have verified the installation media of all distros, re-downloaded the iso files, and burned using the slowest setting all with the same results. I have gone into the bios of my machine and disabled the APCIMCFG, High Precision Event Timer, SW Mem Hole Remap, and UnGanged Enabled. I have also tried to enable this IOMMU option for the memory but still nothing. I have tried using just one of the SATA drives by unplugging the other 5 and same results. I did notice that from time to time I see something from squashfs.ko saying "Clocksource tsc unstable"
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I applied the su security patch to my openSuSE 11.2 x86_64 system.After applying the patch, any attempt at su failed, and after rebooting the system earlier this morning any login (root, user, otherwise) fails with a "Permission Denied".Is it possible that the su update somehow messed up my (standard) pam settings?
