Ubuntu Installation :: Can You Custom Install Lucid?

Apr 29, 2010

When you install Ubuntu, you will typically install a complete desktop environment. It is also possible to install a minimal set of software (just enough to boot your machine) and then manually select the precise software applications to install. Such a "custom" install is usually favoured by server administrators, who prefer to keep only the software they absolutely need on the server.

I have never personally noticed any sections in the install to allow you to do a custom minimal install, is this possible in Lucid? If so how, or do I need to download just a mini install iso?

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling Lucid - Build Custom Install Disc?

Jul 3, 2010

After troubleshooting the lockup problem on my installation of Lucid, I want to wipe the thing and reinstall. I have an integrated Broadcom wireless chipset that I want to integrate the firmware into the new Lucid install disc, along with Nvidia's 180.06 drivers for my GeForce4 440 Go (yes, it's an old machine). I need to build this from XP though, since my current Lucid install is to the point of unusable.

Is there any good way to do that? With XP builds you can use nLite to slipstream just about anything into a clean XP install, including all available hotfixes, extra drivers and a few applications. Is there a similar program for building Ubuntu installs that can do that as well? Also, if I download a new ISO of Lucid to build from, will it have all the current updates integrated, or it be up to me to do it? Edit: just realized I posted this under the wrong topic.

Fedora Installation :: Erratic Install Results W/initrd - Custom Spins With Custom Drivers - Modules?

Dec 28, 2009

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.

The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]

My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.

The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.

Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?

And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?

How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

Ubuntu :: Custom Commands Before Login Time In Lucid?

Jul 24, 2010

I would like to run a few custom commands when booting: "xinput" to calibrate the touchscreen and a couple of "setkeycodes" to make special buttons responsive.

From within a session I need to do "sudo setkeycodes [etc]" - without root access there's a "couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console" error message.

Ideally these commands would already be operational at the login screen, and without requiring entering a root password every time.

I've put the commands in an otherwise empty /etc/rc.local but this does nothing. Other posts mention bootscript.sh but I don't get how this is used; and the best way to do this seems to have changed between versions - so what's the proper Lucid way?

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Custom Install Kernel And Initrd?

Mar 26, 2010

I need to install Ubuntu on approximately 50-60 netbooks. None of them have CD drives, and I don't want to have to install them individually, walking around with a USB stick. I figured the fastest way to install on so many machines is to use a combination of apt-cacher (http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-set-up...ith-apt-cacher) and netbooting. I have successfully booted one machine to test, but as soon as the kernel comes up, support for the network interface is gone. Specifically, the "atl1c" module is not included on the netboot initrd image. Also, I would like to try to use preseeding, and I need to get that onto the initrd as well.

So, to summarize my question: How can I create a custom install kernel and initrd? I have a feeling it's related to the "debian-installer" category in the package repository, but I have not found any good documentation about doing this.

Debian Installation :: Custom Encrypted LVM Install

Mar 23, 2015

After my NVIDIA card died I decided it was time to buy an AMD card again (R9 270X), but I didn't think AMD drivers were such a pain in Linux as people said. Of course, in some distros anyway. On Arch, for example, there's no official release because Arch's developers would have to hold Xorg in order to make a closed-source driver available, because AMD's pace isn't in pair with Linux. So in order to install AMD's drivers on Arch I must rely on some guy's unnoficial repositories, but that isn't the whole problem. Even though I'm cool with adding repos and downgrading Xorg, I'm not cool with it not working for a lot of apps, so that's where I decided to try a few distros. Manjaro is a no-go because it installs Flash as default. openSUSE although is a very good distro, is a complete mess when it comes to repositories, specially multimedia ones. Ubuntu/Mint are also a no-go, Ubuntu because after 12.04 they have a spyware by default, and Mint because it contains non-free stuff by default.

So here I come! I ran Debian in the past for a long time (aside from a breaf period last year) and it was lovely, I could easily set up a custom encrypted install, but now I don't remember how to, and it's killing me. I don't like how the installer doesn't show the partitions size as they actually are, and I don't like how the automated encrypted LVM setup doesn't let me chose the encryption algorithm or the timeframe between each passphrase attempt. That's why I must create my install, and here's what I used to do on Arch (the part that really matters), converted to what I use on Debian:

Code: Select all# modprobe dm-mod

(create one 1GB partition for /boot, unencrypted ; create another big 930 GB formatted as "8e" - LVM - on dev/sda2)
Code: Select all# fdisk /dev/sda
(chose my ciphers and iter time)
Code: Select all# cryptsetup -c twofish-xts-plain64 -y-s 512 --iter-time 5000 luksFormat /dev/sda2
(open the luks container on "sda2_crypt")

[Code].....

After this is done, I go to the "partition disks" page where I select each partition/volume to it's correct destination. I then proceed to installing the base system, configuring apt, and all that. Now, before I install Grub I used to execute the following commands on shell:

Code: Select allĀ # nano /etc/crypttab

I used to put something there, but I don't remember what exactly. It's been a long time since I used Debian for long! But here's what I put there:

Code: Select allsda2_crypt /dev/mapper/sda2_crypt none luks

Then I procceeded to instal syslinux (I REALLY don't like GRUB)

Code: Select all# chroot /target
# apt-get install syslinux

But I get the following error:

E: cannot write log (Is /dev/pts mounted?) - posix_openpt (2: No such file or directory).

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Install Option On Boot Custom Usb Live?

I used Ubuntu customization kit to "build" my own Ubuntu. It works as a charm. Completely recommended.

I install that custom ubuntu 10.04 on a 2gb pendrive, using usb-creator-gtk and it worked also good.

The only thing is bodering me, is when I boot that pendrive, it appear a window asking if I want to install the OS or if I want to use it live.

How can I remove that window on boot?

I want to boot directly on desktop...that way will be perfect!

OpenSUSE Install :: Installation From USB Stick With Custom Kernel

Feb 10, 2010

i need to install openSUSE 11.2 from an USB stick. I followed this article SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE using the openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.iso. Unfortunately the kernel provided in this image doesn't load on my target as it needs a few extra modules for its chipset.

Thus i copied our custom kernel (which is verified to run on the target) and its initrd to the usb stick and i also created a new entry in the syslinux.config. The kernel loads, but then it can't find the root device.Does anybody know, how i need to configure the initrd to make the USB stick the root device?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound In Lucid After Install?

I upgraded to Lucid from Jaunty on a 3 1/2 year old toshiba Satellite by doing a clean install. There is no sound anywhere. I had no sound problems with Jaunty. I ran the alsa upgrade script from this site:

There was no change I could see after this was done.

In sound preferences>
hardware--there are no entries;
input--the input volume is shaded
output--the entry is Dummy Output stereo

The alsamixer shows only the pcm control, there are no capture controls. In select sound card (F6) I selected HDA ATI SB (default was only other choice). I have Linux Mint 9 (based on Lucid) on a Dell mini-9 and the sound works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Freezes During Install

Aug 6, 2010

I'm trying to install Lucid to an older PC, but it constantly freezes during the setup. Most of the time I can't even select whether I want to install or to try the OS, but sometimes I get past that. Once I got to the point where the installation was copying the files to the hard drive, but it froze once again at 5%. The PC's config is: 1,8 GHz AMD processor, 768 MB DDR1 memory, 200 GB HDD, ATI 9200 VGA and a DVD drive. According to the minimum reqs for lucid this should be more than enough, yet Lucid froze once while in Live CD mode. Should I try an older ubuntu version? Or could this be something more serious, ie hardware issue in which case you guys can't help.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Run Install CD - Installing 10.04 - Lucid Lynx

May 23, 2010

Decided to try out Ubuntu instead of automatically getting the next Windows OS.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 with on board video card (will be relevant soon, I think).

After trying making my own CD and not being able to at least run the LiveCD (thought it was my fault even thought the MD5 #'s matched correctly), I went to Shipit and got a CD delivered of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). When I put the CD into my computer while running windows, the CD is not recognized, which seems strange to me. When I put the same CD into my work laptop (note that both computers are running XP), I can see the contents of the CD. Decide that it might not be an issue and restart the computer in the hope of booting from the CD. CD is never recognized and looking at the bootmenu, it has USB-cdRom at the top of the list.

More information: CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz. I don't believe it is a 64bit computer but I can't verify that. I mention this because I believe the CD I got is the 32bit version and that it should be sufficient but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone else knew something.

That booted from the usb, but just after punshing in the language etc it complains that it cant find the cdrom or something like that. then i try the [url], but that wont boot at all with this same iso mentioned above. and burn it to a darn CD. it boots, but somewhere during the process it stops and asks for the same cd that is actually in the drive already. there is a thread about this here: [url] I then wanted to find an easy iso that i could throw on my usb-pen and install the whole thing through ftp like i did in the old days with floppies. but man, i got lost in the documentation with no clear path on how to do it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bring Back Gnome-app-install For Lucid?

Apr 30, 2010

I hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time. The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?

Following lines taken from other replies in this post to make it easier to do:

-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.

-Update the repository (including the new PPA):

sudo apt-get update

-Install the gnome application installer:

sudo apt-get install gnome-app-install

-Run the gnome application installer:

gnome-app-install

Ubuntu Installation :: Brother Printer Fails After Lucid Re-install

Aug 7, 2010

I recently re-installed lucid on a computer which had a working ethernet printer queue, to a Brother MFC-5490cn. I installed the drivers from the ubuntu package archive and set up two printer queues, one for "dnssd://<ip-address>" and the other "lpd://<ip-address>/BINARY_P1". The first appears to recognize that the printer color ink is low, so perhaps there is some communication, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. The second queue appears to fail completely.

I vaguely recall that for my previous installation I used the package supplied by Brother, but that it was very difficult, since the package no longer matched the Ubuntu file layout and locations.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Fresh 10.04 Lucid Install Not Upgrade And Not Via Bios?

Mar 22, 2011

Still in 8.04 hardy heron, ordinary upgrade via automatic upgrade does not work, some essential pieces missing, but also my bios does not support usb cd and my "original" cd drive is broken. So........ I have burnt a cd Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx desktop version
32 bit (intel).

1) I have broken cd drive and old bios, i have usb cd drive instead which is not supported by bios when boot from cd.

2) I have still Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron but if i upgrade to 10.04 from there via automatic upgrade, this does not work, some patches missing, whatever, but upgrade this way does not work and in the end the system is set back to 8.04 again...

3) I have burnt a cd with entire Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx which i had downloaded from the web at ubuntu com; within my 8.04 i want to install all of it, so i want to install 10.04 this way, so a fresh installation via my usb cd (this is also the way i had burnt this cd image; the cd shows all the files so it is the right way burnt), so just not via bios boot, or how to explain this best.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Lucid Server - Blank Screen During Install?

Apr 21, 2011

I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.

I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Blank Partition With Gparted And Install Lucid On It

Apr 30, 2010

how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)

What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install From Lucid CD And Home Folder Access

May 17, 2010

I have a 160gb Hard Drive, I partitioned like this:
1. First partition 16GB, ext4, mounted / I have my Lucid filesystem on this partition and boot flagged.
2. Second partition 112GB (extended- 110gb as /home, and 2gb as swap memory)

My disk list:
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1946 15631213+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 1947 15647 110053282+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1947 2274 2634628+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 2275 15647 107418591 83 Linux

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,

My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?
