Fedora Installation :: Graphics Fail F11 LiveCD Install

System Specs:
Toshiba A135-S2276 Laptop With Vista
ATI RADEON 200M 128MB
1.78Ghx Core Duo
2GB RAM

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.

Ubuntu :: Lucid / LiveCD Will Not Boot

Jun 28, 2010

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 64bit, HP ZV6000

I've boon doing a lot of reading on booting problems in 10.04 and it seems as though there are a lot of booting issues after the upgrade or, in my case, out of the blue. I've only been using Ubuntu for about 6 months now, dual-booting my WinXP box, and for the most part haven't had any issues. I upgraded to 10.04 via the update manager (or whatever it was that said: there's a new version of Ubuntu out there, please update) sometime in May and never had a problem (although I did choose a wrong setting for the dual boot but that just meant I couldn't get into WinXP).

Out of the blue one day, after being on the laptop for a few hours I decided to shut down and go outside. I did the same normal shutdown I always do and shut the computer down. I came back to it a couple of hours later and it wouldn't boot. The HP splash screen pops up (as normal) giving me the opportunity to go into the BIOS if needed and then the GRUB 1.98 loader shows the available versions: Ubuntu kernel, ubuntu kernel and Win partition. If I choose either of the two Ubuntu kernel's my screen goes blank and I get a flashing curser in the top left corner. And that's it. I've let it sit for an hour and nothing.

I tried to boot from my LiveCD (9.10) but the computer will not boot from the LiveCD. I took out the HDD and slid it into a USB connector and plugged it into another computer and only the WinXP partition shows. I can't even look into the non-OS partition I created specifically for circumstances like these. I tried the "GRUB> find /boot/grub/grub.conf" command from the GRUB menu and nothing. It comes back with a "find is not a valid command" notice. I have some music and videos on there I'd really rather not lose. Unfortunately, the laptop is too old to boot from a USB (BIOS isn't being updated anymore) and I can't think of any other options. As far as I know, my only other option is to format the drive and start over.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Server - Fail To Login With A Timeout Error When Logging In Via Ssh

Jun 28, 2011

I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.

ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 Fail

Apr 28, 2011

Fail the upgrading...
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'update-manager-kde' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

Ubuntu :: OS Upgrade Causing NetBeans To Fail

May 7, 2010

I recently upgraded to 10.04 and now netbeans is not working. It worked fine the first restart after i upgraded so i thought all was good. This morning i ran it and it said something about not being able to load some modules. Since then, i've tried uninstalling it, re-installing it, and numerous restarts, all to no avail. I'm gonna try downloading the package from their website and running it from a separate install and see if that helps, but after that, I'm out of ideas.

When i run it either from the terminal or by clicking on it, it shows the loading screen, then the loading screen dissapears, then nothing else happens. In the terminal, it waits about ten seconds after the screen dissapears and the program seems to exit, since the terminal begins accepting commands once again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Online Upgrade From 10.10 To 11.04 - Fail

May 1, 2011

I was a little worried about doing an upgrade, via Update Manager, from 10.10 to 11.04.

I was right to be worried.

Boot hangs and booting in verbose mode, grub does come up, but going into the main latest kernel version shows;

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown block.

Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions

0b00 1648575 sr0 driver sr

May have missed some of the text as wrote it down.

sda1 was my original and only partition.

Have used my 10.10 live cd and file structure and files are all there,

Took the opportunity to shrink the single main partion and create primary partitions for /home and another for all the junk I accumulate. sda1 will still be my boot partition.

In the process of making a 11.04 boot CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Power Fail During Upgrade / Resolve This?

May 3, 2010

The other evening I was in the lengthy process of upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to version 10.04. It had downloaded all the packages and was in the process of upgrading when a thunderstorm blew in. The power failed momentarily. The system crashed and the installation did not complete.

The system is dual boot to Windows XP. From GRUB when I try to boot Ubuntu the display goes dark, after a few seconds of the white Ubuntu logo. If I hit ENTER I get a flashing Cursor. I can boot to System Restore and get the Recovery Menu. I don't know if there is something I can do from there to repair/finish my upgrade, or even revert to version 9, when I could restart the upgrade.

Can I burn a Live CD for version 10.04 and finish the upgrade? This would salvage the settings, printer drivers, and other programs that I have installed. If I have to make a brand new installation I have to rebuild all of the things I spent many hours getting setup.

b) Repair the missing/damaged 10.04 files
c) replace the 10.04 OS

Ubuntu Installation :: Fail To Upgrade Qbittorrent And Now Cannot Reinstall It?

Apr 28, 2011

I wanted to upgrade qbittorrent to the newest version. So I went to the official website and followed the steps of typing some commands in the terminal. However, it said missing libtorrent-rasterbar5. I went to Synaptic and checked, showing "libtorrent-rasterbar6". Does this mean my version of libtorrent-rasterbar is too new?

And I've removed something regarding qbittorrent because I wanted to install rasterbar5. I searched for rasterbar5 in the Net and downloaded it. It connected to the Ubuntu Software Centre automatically but it showed unable to install.

So I thought I failed to upgrade qbittorrent. I just wanted to install the original version (v2.4.0). I did it like the first time I downloaded qbittorrent. Open the Ubuntu Software Centre and search for it and press "install". It failed! Because a type of repositories named "qbittorrent" showing conflict.

I've dealt with a similar problem regarding GIMP successfully before. But I can't remember.

After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?
