Trying to install Ubuntu (tried several releases) on HP Pavillion Pentium 4 Proccessor 515 2.93 Gig 1M L2 cache 533mhz 90nm . Have 1 gig ram and 1Tb hd. Hangs on initial install screen for ever. Tried versions from 8.10 (origional disk) to 11.01. Machine works perfectly on Windows XP but who wants that? The model is pavillion 1000 system number pl397aa.

Yesterday I downloaded 10.10 desktop version and burned an image to a CD. After installed to a Dell Dimension E510 machine successfully (I wiped out windows completely), the first update found 315 items to update. After downloaded, ubuntu asked to reboot the machine. Since then, the machine is stucking on the ubuntu startup screen. I suppose it is applying the updates; however, it has been over 12 hours. Is it normal to take that long?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Lucid running on a Toshiba Portg R500. Last week it started hanging for just over one minute at the initial Toshiba screen. That is, the screen with the Toshiba logo and a series of boot-from options (HDD, CD, Network, USB) along the bottom. I don't know if the machine is even interacting with the OS at this stage. Also, neither Ubuntu nor the machine recognises the CD-ROM tray any longer. As in, I can't boot from CD and I also can't mount a CD when in Ubuntu. I can, however, boot from a USB startup disk (after the one minute delay).
I'm not sure how to collect helpful data on this sort of issue, especially since I can't see any threads that point to similar problems. The only strange thing I did the day this problem started was to forget to unmount a truecrypt-encrypted USB key before shutting the laptop off.
I've reinstalled Lucid but to no avail. I assume that whatever problem I have is a BIOS problem (and so strictly not for here)? As you can imagine though I want to make sure I've accounted for all other possibilities before fooling around with the BIOS.

Today i used the mini CD command-line install, got the system running at the terminal, but installing xorg or gnome and rebooting results again in fail. Tried to edit xorg.conf through nano, after sudo apt-get install but before reboot, but was fail again (couldn't open the file). I dont know exactly if its the gnome or the X the issue, because i tried at the same notebook the ubuntu 8.04, the wallpaper pops up but it freezes after, i cannot use the X. Both cd's are checksum valid originals from canonical
is there any ways to install gnome and x in the terminal, edit the xorg.conf with anything that solve the problem and reboot? update 23:11PM: I found it, its a issue with old intel graphic cards. i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa in the boot parameters and i could use the installer in the lucid live cd. but now i need to edit the grub to always boot with this parameter.
I can not get ubuntu to install on my workstation. I have the 64-bit cd (am currently trying the 32-bit cd with similar results) and it won't install. I get to the ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots underneath it and it looks like it's trying to run for several minutes. After the several minutes, the screen simply goes black and I can't do anything.

Now, when starting up Ubuntu, it appears to log in fine, but right near the end of the theme and before the desktop loads, it hangs, repeating a slice of the intro music over and over again. View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu and right now I am running it inside Windows. I burnt it onto a cd so I could install it onto my 2nd harddrive. I know the cd is fine. When I boot off the cd a purple screen loads up with some weird symbols at the bottom looks like a picture of a battery = and then a picture of a stick figure man. If I hit f6 I can get to the option screen. I've tried using noapci, nomodeset, disabling the framebuffer, and vga=normal. None of them work as soon as I hit enter to start installing Ubuntu it just sits there on the menu screen and never does anything.

I tried to install last version of xubuntu then, and I got a message that /dev/../loop0 couldn' d mount or sth then I learned about lubuntu and I tried to installed them but I tried both a dvd and a cd and on both cases after I select language and "install on this machine" I just see a screen with 4 red dots writing "Ubuntu 10.10" that stays like this forever.. and nothing happens. the same if I select to boot from the cd just to check the environment. I then tried a ubuntu-studio dvd I had handy just to see if this would work - and it started installing as expecting, I cancelled it after a while. how to get lubuntu running?

My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
Im trying to install fedora 11 from the live CD and when i get into the CD meny where it says "boot" and "press tab for boot options" i press enter. then a bunch lines flash across the screen with a lot of error messages. then the fedora loading bar at the bottom loads. hangs for about 1 minute at the very end. then the GMD screen appears. But the GMD screen is all out of place and its patchy as if my graphics card was causing some kind of error

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.
I'd like to change the font characteristics (size, colour) on initial login screen (list of users) however I cannot find the configuration options.

I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.
I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).
Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.
I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.
I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.
Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop cooler that sits under my laptop and has 4 USB ports on the back. It plugs into my laptop via USB and that is the only source of power it has. The issue is when I try to boot Ubuntu with it plugged in it hangs forever and if I unplug it then it seems to boot up just fine. This happens even if nothing is plugged into the ports on the cooler. I also notice that if I plug the cooler in after Ubuntu is fully booted it will work but does not see things plugged into it every time.

He is a developer and when installing other instances of RH he just checked off basically all of the packages under development during the initial installer. Now, he's trying to add packages but they require dependencies and he is not able to auto-satisfy those dependencies.
Is there a way that I can get back to that menu during the initial installation and let him check off all the boxes that he wants, or can I have RH auto-install all packages from DVD or install all required packages from DVD?
I am trying to install Lucid on my Alienware M17x laptop.I loaded the install to my thumb drive and boot to my thumb drive but after the initial option screen, I see nothing. I am a neophyte to linux so please cut me some slack. I'm installing the latest version of ubuntu on my old Dell Latitude C840 Laptop. (386 desktop install from CD). I cant seem to get past 79% completion. It just hangs there. I have to assume I'm not the first person to have this problem. I'm reasonably adept with computers but all of the threads/blogs that seemingly address this problem are lost to me. Can anyone provide a simple... or at least step by step process on how I can fix this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
I'm trying to upgrade an EeePC from 9.10 (I think it is) to 10.10. I've tried two different thumb drives and a CD, redownloading the UNR image each time. What happens is it will get the the screen where it says 'Preparing to install Ubuntu-Netbook'. I hit forward, and then the little dial just spins indefinitely. I've also tried plugging the thumb drives into different USB ports, and playing around the with the hard disk compatibility mode on in the BIOS (currently set to 'compatible', but AHCI, IDE Enhanced etc made no difference).

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.
I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.
At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.
The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel
I just upgraded my system's motherboard with an Asus M4N78 Pro and did a clean install of 9.10. The install seems to go fine but when it finishes and does the final restart I seems to get stuck at the place you'd normally see the GRUB menu. Instead all I see is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the left corner. This isn't just a long boot, its stuck. It never progresses past this point.
During the install everything seems fine. Video, network etc. I've tried several reburned CDs and I get the same result each time. For the record I've installed Ubuntu as a single partition an IDE drive. The bios is set to boot from that drive. ow the heck can I figure out what is happening? Is there a way to boot and display any and all messages displayed? Is this thing hanging in GRUB somewhere?
I'm on an HP Pavillion dv1000 laptop. I used a live CD to install Ubuntu 10.10 to an external USB hard drive. The install completed successfully, but after a reboot I am stuck on a black screen with a white cursor. Before that I see nothing but the initial HP startup screen. I am able to run the live CD without problems, and I have been running Ubuntu from a 4GB thumb drive (which I installed on using the same live CD that I used to install on my current external hard drive). I had no problems whatsoever running from the CD or thumb drive, so I can't figure out why the external hard drive would be so different.
