i updated tis morning to 10.04 on a compaq netbook and only problem is that the system minimizes all windows.... Can't kee a window on top for more than 2 secs. It seems that all is ok,any program i klick runs but it immediatly minimizes and won't stay open. I cant do anything,i have to type one character at a time.

I maximize it and it just re-minimizes it. What can I do to stop this?

But now I cannot boot my windows partition.Windows XP is on the grub boot menu, but if I click on it, a black screen show up, and only a blinking cursor.When i boot ubuntu, I can read the ntfs partition.What do I have to do, to get windows xp to boot again?

I know this is a long shot, BUT Is there any way to implement the Netbook Remix 10.04 GUI into Windows 7? As in basically making Windows 7 look and act like the GUI in Remix. I love the GUI, and if it's impossible, I'll just suck it up and dual boot, the 30 gb Win7/XP partition is bugging the crap out of me. Just wondering if there was something out there that made this thing possible.
And for the record, I'd switch back to full linux when my card is supported in october =P

Every other key seems to work fine and I can use the key combo <ALT>-d to issue a 'd', but that is less than convenient. I saw this post [URL] which said to use gconf-editor to set a keyboard layout, but that didn't fix the problem.

I would like to boot directly from an external hard disk to improve performance over my internal notebook hard disk. My notebook has no native eSata jack but a pci express card.
As my BIOS doesn't support the card on boot time so no way directly booting it.
My question is, is it possible to work around this issue by using an USB stick or similar with a boot loader like grub and if so, will this only work for Linux or Windows as well?
Allot of Crazy things happened lately. A few problems happened and I fixed them. In the end I have 3 partitions of ubuntu net book remix and 1 for windows 7. I never reinstalled windows so could I do a system restore (in windows)to go back and then reinstall 1 partition of ubuntu net book remix.

I updated because Grub2 was not updating to the newer kernels that were being installed. Now the new kernel is showing in the boot menu, boots fine into Ubuntu, but my Windows installs won't boot. Current installed version is grub-install (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6).

Both windows are sized such that they fit on the screen at the same time. Prior to a week or so ago, this was very straight forward. Now when I click on an app in the Task Manager after opening OpenOffice, other open apps are minimized - sometimes all of them, sometimes just the most recent. I usually have Dolphin, a terminal window, Firefox, OpenOffice and sometimes a spreadsheet open. A friend who is far more familiar with Linux than I, suggested that the memory manager may have gotten confused and that logging out should clear this up. I tried that to no avail, as well as rebooting. I've also looked through the options in each of the apps that I've got open to see if there's any obvious user options that might be affecting this. I've found nothing.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.4.2 on a M622 eMachines notebook. I have no audio what-so-ever even after installing an ALSA mixer and updating everything. I can control every option as if the sound drivers were functioning fine. I've made sure nothing is muted and I've checked the headphones as well. What's strange is that the microphone input works and I'm able to record with sound recorder (according to the audio in level meter). The only thing I can think of is that the wrong drivers are installed but I'm not sure how about changing them or what to change them to. Here is a copy of my ALSA report:

I have tried several times installing ubuntu netbook remix on my netbook and have followed guides step by step but it dosn't work (screen goes black, flashing hyphen). Only thing i might be doing wrong is using an external 320gb hdd that i had previously formated to fat32 instead of a usb pendrive. Is this the problem, note i dont have a pendrive large enough.

View 2 Replies View Relatedinstalling Ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook. Currently, I am using IBM Thinkpad X31 with docking that has swappable 2nd HD. The 1st internal HD has WIN XP on it. I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?

I just install Ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded the Smartboard install. After I click the program to install it starts thinking then asks for my password. I enter my password it takes it then stops thinking. All other functions work just fine apart from the install. It hasn't started yet. I have a feeling that it would install just fine if I could take of the whole asking for the password nonsense. is there a way to do that.
