i know this is normal when you use ubuntu but i was wondering if there was a way to change this or fix this. i noticed when you play a flash movie (like a videos video) in full screen and you change the volume using the volume keys on the keyboard, it exits out of full screen mode.

No matter what app I use, if I view a window at full screen, the contents of the window are white instead of displaying the content. I have to re-size the window smaller in order to see the contents of a window. What can be causing this and how do I fix it?
I am using a HP laptop running 11.04 in Classic mode.

What I mean is I'd like to watch stuff in its original size but with the rest of the screen black, the way it is in full screen view (but I don't want it zoomed). RealPlayer calls this option "theatre view". Is there a line I can put into terminal? I tried
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
and changing commenting in zoom=yes and changing it to zoom=no. Made no difference.

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

I don't know much about lvm and I've managed to screw up a drive. I had a 500GB drive with FC14 on it and I wanted to copy over a load of data to my new 1TB that was replacing it. I set up my new install the same way as the old...including the same volume names (error number 1 I think) I successfully mounted the old/500GB drive (using vgscan and vgchange -a y etc.) using a laptop (running FC13) and an external hdd cradle. I could access the files I wanted but this wasn't the machine I wanted to copy them to (I was doing this while waiting for the install to finish on the new drive).
When I tried the same process on the new install I found that having two lvm with the same name meant I couldn't mount the external one. So I opened the disk utility (palimsest) and was going to change the name of the old volume group but it wouldn't let me do that. I then thought maybe I could get away with just changing the name of the partition where the files were and maybe I could add it to the mounted group or something so I changed it to lv_home2. This changed the name of my new/1TB lv_home to lv_home2 as well. So thinking that wasn't the answer I just changed the name of the new lv_home2 back to lv_home.
From that point on I haven't been able to see the old drives partitions (the new volume group still works so far). I has a physical volume but the volume group and volume names are gone from view. When I try to vgscan on my main computer or the laptop I had it working on earlier I get:
[Code]....

What I'm trying to do is wget images, however, I'm not sure how to do it 100% right. What I've got is a index.html page that has images (thumbs) that link to the full size images. How do I grab the full size images?
Example of links on the page:
<a href="images/*random numbers*.jpg" target="_blank"><img border=0 width=112 height=150 src="images/tn_*random numbers*.jpg" style="position:relative;left:3px;top:3px" /></a>
I tried:
wget -A.jpg -r -l1 -np URLHERE
but only got the thumbs.

Recently I came across a video I wanted to see from Veoh and you only get 5 minutes preview unless you install the veoh web player.. and guess what.. its for windows only! I heard its working under wine.
Anyway, after some looking around and trying different scripts and programs, the only thing that worked for me was a firefox extension (which unfortunately requires registration - which fortunately takes really 5 seconds. No e-mail confirmations etc. - and unfortunately has a website FULL of ads and pop ups! I hope they dont start asking for money soon). So, the extension is [URL] I dont know if you can install it from addons.mozilla.org . I logged in yet found no install button.. had to go to developers website.

Usually when i did, for example:
:~/> vi documents/<tab><tab>
i would get list of files in 'documents' dir on my konsole.
:~/> vi documents/
doc1 doc2 doc3
Bu now in 11.4 when i do that i get whole path, like this for example:
:~/> vi documents/<tab><tab>
:~/> vi documents/
documents/doc1 documents/doc2 documents/doc3
how to make it look "old" style?

I am having a small issue with how Ubuntu displays my files. In Windows 7, I typically view my files in the "list format." In Windows 7, when in that format, it displays the entire file name of my files. In Ubuntu, "compact view" is the same format as "list" from Windows 7. The only difference is, it does not show the entire filename. Kansas - Carry on my Wayward son.mp3 for example, is viewed as Kansas - Carry on m... This is really not a big deal. And I get it, compact means compact. I can just use Ubuntu's "List View" to see the entire file names of files. But that's not my preferred way of viewing files. I was wondering if there was a way to make "compact view" show the entire file of my files.

In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?

I have a Fedora 8 system that uses LVM on one of it's drives (/dev/sdb2). One of the logical volumes is getting full (LogVol02). There is an unused, unmounted logical volume (LogVol03) available. I can see two possible options.
1) Mount the unused logical volume (LogVol03) on a new mount point (/home2) and create more space there
2) Delete the LogVol03 logical volume and extend the nearly full volume (LogVol02) into the now available space.
Option 2 seems like the better approach, since it will seem seamless to the system users. I'm looking for suggestions on how I should go about doing this and what I need to look out for. Is it better to use the command line tools (lvm ...) or the GUI (system-config-lvm) to do this?

I was running scripts overnight from the command line (inside Screen on a Linux EC2 instance) and some errors that I was not tracking occurred. I want to "scroll up" or view more of the history in Screen, but I cannot seem to find any commands that will work. I need to see the onscreen output "further up" than I can on my current screen. CTRL + a is supposed to put me into scroll mode inside Screen, but it's not working.

I was running kpdf and clicked Full Screen from within the kpdf window, I think in the View menu. Now I don't know how to regain control of the screen. I mean the menu bar is no longer present. Each time I run it, it is in full screen mode. I pressed F1 and read the section on the View menu. But it doesn't say anything about full screen.

Earlier this morning I made my girlfriend an account on my Ubuntu desktop, I entered all the information, (username, full name etc.) and it worked fine. When I went to GDM I noticed that it displays both her full name, and username, but I seem to have my first name only as both my full name and user name (it just says "luke" twice).
I hadn't really paid attention to this before, but now it looked really odd with my girlfriend's full name, but only my first name. So I went to change it. Where to do that? I tried System->Preferences->About Me and System->Administration->Users and Groups, but I can't see "Full name" anywhere. In the end I used chfn on the command line to do it, but surely Ubuntu 10.04 isn't missing graphical a way to change a users full name is it?

I am currently using an M-Audio 7.1 PCI sound card on a headless non-GUI Centos5.5 install. MPD is running in the background for jukebox usage. The problem is, I seem to be at 100% volume output on the jukebox and I can't figure out how to change volume. Using alsaunmute to set volume sets some kind of volume on the soundcard, from what I can tell, but it's like that new volume setting is not being respected by ALSA. I can also set the volume using 'alsamixer' which also produces no noticable effect (100% is the same as 0%, as loud as could be from the PC).
I'm using the digital coax output from the soundcard for this - not the 3.5mm jack (due to stereo reasons beyond my control). Perhaps I'm not modifying the master volume? Thing is, when modify volume settings via an MPD client, such as Minion or one on my phone, the volume setting does change in the ALSA software, but there's no audible difference. It makes me think alsa is not being used for sound control, but I'm stumped as to how to check otherwise. At least sound plays!

(Ubuntu 10.04) I would like to change to change the ownership of one of my storage partitions from root to dad - I am currently reading through as much Ubuntu documentation as I can but the process is slow. If I gksudo nautilus and select the drive, right click/properties/Permissions the owner is set to root. If I try to change the group ownership from root to dad it looks like it momentarily does it but it stays at root.
using Pysdm as a gui for fstab - but so far I have only found out how to allow other users to mount the volume not own it. My fstab entry for this volume reads as /dev/sdb6 /media/backuphd2 ntfs-3g group=dad, users, user, owner 0 0 - it looks to me that in terms of ownership, root = 0 0 Can I find out what the ownership of dad is in terms of numbers (e.g. owner 0 1 or owner 1 1) and then change the fstab entry?

My setup at home uses a laptop, with a larger external monitor in addition to the built-in LCD panel, which is primary. I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode.
However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu).
