I run a dual boot machine with XP pro and Ubuntu 10.10.I want to change the 10.10 to the netbook remix version. How do I install remix instead of 10.10 without damaging XP?

Only thing i might be doing wrong is using an external 320gb hdd that i had previously formated to fat32 instead of a usb pendrive. Is this the problem, note i dont have a pendrive large enough.

is this ok to install and would any graphics run ok or could i switch them off so it would run smooth. is there a way to upgrade to 9.10 and netbook remix can i order a free ubuntu netbook remix cd? i am using a laptop not a netbook i want netbook remix as it looks and is very clean and simple and would be a really nice change from the boring gnome theme no offence. finally can you turn it off just if you need to use a normal gnome desktop.

as far as I know it is possible to upgrade from cd using Alternate cd's, but what I want is to stay with netbook remix so dont want to upgrade to desktop or anything else.
I'm trying to install from a USB drive. I followed the instructions given on an Ubuntu website, only to get the following output when booting from the drive:

I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 from Ubuntu netbook remix 10.10, When I go to the update manager and check for updates it says that no updates were found, It also doesnt say that there is a new version available, I've checked my settings and its set to normal upgrades.

I'm not a huge fan of netbook remix, and I find it really doesn't add a whole lot to my netbook experience. I was quite surprised when setting up evolution and empathy to find a number of the windows didn't fit on my 1024x600 screen.As such I would like to put normal Ubuntu 10.04 onto my netbook. What would be the easiest way to do it? Should I just install it from a LiveCD, or is there a better way?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust bought a refurb PC900 and also now have a SDHC Flash with Ubuntu 10.4 netbook remix on it so that I can boot from it. I am having a problem that the UNR shows the time and date 5 hours behind the real time. The notebook BIOS is correct. When I try to set the time and date it goes back to the original time that was set before withing a few seconds. I set up a new user with administrator full access but that did not solve the issue. I have also tried setting up Ubunto One but my system does not act like the directions online. Can I get files from my non-ubunto pc to my PC900? It seems only one way to me right now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHave downloaded the image twice now and burned it to CD twice. This is a brand new HP 6530b. It will boot to the CD and come up with the ubuntu install menu. I can arrow up and down, but when I press enter on any entry nothing happens. The CD will spin momentarily but then stop. Been trying to make this work for two weeks.

It seems that all is ok,any program i klick runs but it immediatly minimizes and won't stay open. I cant do anything,i have to type one character at a time.

OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.
View 2 Replies View Relateddo you have any suggestions how I can install Ubuntu netbook edition on an old Laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 2131) currently running Windows 2000 with all servicepacks (if I recall correctly it is SP5) without boot-support for USB-Stick/Media, CD-ROM, PXE/netboot; booting is only supported from builtin harddisk and from floppy-disk drive, which is definitely broken. (with working floppy disk drive all would be fine). I also installed WUBI, but the harddisk is only 4 GB, so I had to use the USB-Stick as the Ubuntu install partition and this is not supported by the Laptop as it cannot boot from it.
Has anybody an idea, is it viable to online-resize an NTFS-partition to create a small linux-partition for bootstrapping the install?? I do not want to, it's still useful, so when crashing the NTFS-filesystem is likely I prefer not to take this route and leave the laptop with Win2k installed.

I'm an old user of Ubuntu/Linux but have stumbled across my first major problem in years. I just can't get my head around it.I own a Asus Eee Pc 1005HA it has roughly 160gb and is currently running WinXP. I'm trying to install the latest Netbook remix 10.04 onto the machine as a dual boot option.I've loaded the iso onto a usb drive and everything works perfectly. The problem is during installation. I can't work out how to set up the partitions for a dual boot option. Below is the current configuration on the system.

I have a Dell Inspirion 3500 laptop with the following specs pentium II 266mhz processor floppy drive (registers in BIOS, attached to serial port in back) CD-ROM drive (doesn't registers in BIOS, although is displayed in system intialization prior to boot) 4 GB hard drive (wiped with Darik's Nuke and BOOT floppy disk)
I have tried to boot from all sorts of Windows CD's and Linux CD's. None will boot. So I choose to boot from USB. Since It is such an old laptop I needed to load the USB drivers before booting. SMART BOOT MANAGER failed. PLOP BOOT MANAGER booted to its own menu. It still would not boot to CD. So I tried putting an exact copy of the remix ISO onto a USB and loading it. This failed so I used UNETBOOTIN to extract the ISO to USB. PLOP finally recognized it and loaded the UNETBOOTIN MENU. From there I load the Graphical environment (since the dev said it wont load any other) Then UNETBOOTIN loads the REMIX into the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" from USB. Once I was in the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" I right clicked and opened a "TERMINAL EMULATOR" and from there I ran the �sudo ./install.sh� command to install it from the USB stick (dev's instructions). From there it says it can only install to a single blank hard drive of at least 500mb, but it makes no allowance for alternative hardware or software changes. Is it possible that since I have a floppy,cdrom,and usb stick installed during the install that it is causing an error? I choose yes.I enter username , then click yes.Then I choose hostname , and click yes. Now for the final step It says that the drive has partitions or filesystems in place. Here is what it displays

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 and it ran fine. However, the boot menu is hidden and by default it always boots into Ubuntu (I don't know.. maybe the timeout was 0). I wanted to switch to a different kernel so I compiled a new kernel and installed it. But upon reboot it would always boot into the old kernel. So I updated grub and made the new kernel the default.
Now the new kernel is givine me a kernel panic and I can't access my system because the grub boot menu doesn't show anything (just boots into the newly compiled kernel and gives me a panic message). I don't have a recovery cd/usb. Is there a way for me to somehow slow grub down or show a menu? Pressing esc at boot doesn't help.
