Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound On EMachines Notebook?
Mar 13, 2011
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4.2 on a M622 eMachines notebook. I have no audio what-so-ever even after installing an ALSA mixer and updating everything. I can control every option as if the sound drivers were functioning fine. I've made sure nothing is muted and I've checked the headphones as well. What's strange is that the microphone input works and I'm able to record with sound recorder (according to the audio in level meter). The only thing I can think of is that the wrong drivers are installed but I'm not sure how about changing them or what to change them to. Here is a copy of my ALSA report:

I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.
Got a black screen after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. My Computer is an Acer eMachines E527 [URL]
I) Just started Computer normally, using new Kernel and 11.04 then the screen became black as before. Waited until Harddisk (Light) wouldn't work too much and boot seemed to be over.
II) IN BLIND FLIGHT (without seeing anything, since screen is black):
1) opened the Terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2 2) typed my "Username" (enter) 3) typed my "Password" (enter) 4) typed "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" (enter) 5) typed my "Password" (enter)
III) Now it is not really satisfactory to do this over and over again each time restarting my computer. Is there any way to use a batch or use the grub to setpci ? I'd like to install 11.04 with an USB Stick on a similar computer - how do I setpci there?
i can't install debian 5 in my emachines G725 notebook, the ethernet card is not recognized, it's name: Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller .
There is no sound on my Debian notebook.I added myself to "audio" group and have "alsa-utils", "pulseaudio", and "firmware-linux" packages installed.
However when I try to play an audio file there is no sound regardless of volume settings.

I've spent the past 2 days attempting to get the sound working on a Toshiba A75 notebook. Here is what i've tried so far: remove/purge alsa and pulse audio then reinstall set up/configure OSS download and compile latest alsa drivers. code...
My questions are: is there anyone using this laptop on Lucid with sound? Can anyone provide a new idea how to make this work if it is compatible hardware.
I have installed a Ubuntu Server 10.10 with fluxbox as X. Everything works fine except the sound. Either speakers or with headsets, it does not work at ALL. This is some informations that could help you. I need to listen music
I am playing with my Logitech webcam for the first time. The Cheese application recognises it OK, but sound is out of synch by about a second or more (sound behind video). I get similar problems with UCView and VLC Is this a known problem with an easy fix? It has the feel of a driver issue, but that is only a guess. I have googled without success.
i have a problem in my notebook, its can make a sound i use the slackware 13 edition for my notebook i have upgraded my alsa-base on my laptop to alsa 1.0.22 on my slackware 13. i have follow the instruction tu active my sound device with command:

I have Hp Pavillion dv4-1235ee Notebook PC with windows vista.there is no sound coming from internal speakers, 3d sound blaster pro compatible sound 16 bit integrated.
I have a busted XP notebook, no CD, no boot from USB. I have the option of booting from network, my provider wants to charge me to set up a static IP address I'm hoping to just plug in to my working 8.04 install with a cat5 cable or through a simple workgroup switch & get the basics installed where would I find such a procedure?
the gateway notbook hangs, part way through the restore [xp] process, I can only get to bios & restore, no dos prompt I don't care about any of the info or having XP I know the HDD may be bad
Just installed Ubuntu on my sister-in-law's emachines. Suddenly, her computer's not finding any wireless networks (although the other two Linux computers in the house find and connect just fine, as did her computer when it ran Windows).

I have read the sticky and taken the quizzes, even installed ubuntu, mint, and fedora. I am looking for a distro for an older (4+) years E-machine PC. All I really want it to do is play Netflix online, and movies I have stored to an external hard drive. Maybe some torrenting and VERY light document work. I want it to be fast, and stable. Not bloated with all kinds of stuff I don't need like Ubuntu and mint, or crash like fedora every 20 mins.
installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook. Currently, I am using IBM Thinkpad X31 with docking that has swappable 2nd HD. The 1st internal HD has WIN XP on it. I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?
I am using a Dell D810 Notebook and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with all the latest upgrades, I would like to know if it is ok to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. I have read the release notes and I am not certain if Linux kernel 2.6.35 supports my Notebook. Below I have included out put for cat /proc/cpuinfo and x86info -a
I just install Ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded the Smartboard install. After I click the program to install it starts thinking then asks for my password. I enter my password it takes it then stops thinking. All other functions work just fine apart from the install. It hasn't started yet. I have a feeling that it would install just fine if I could take of the whole asking for the password nonsense. is there a way to do that.
im trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on a dell precision m2400.The problem is that it goes into the "ubuntu" logo and it reads the cd... and nothing happens, it never leaves that screen
No I have been on the road for some months and felt the need to buy a small notebook. I assumed it would be possible to put on ubuntu, to go back to this amazing system. It is a strange Peruvian brand and I can not seem to get ubuntu installed I feel so naive of thinking it would work. details>
brand is advance http://www.advanceperu.com series FT4006R Intel Mobile ATOM N455 processor harddisk 320 Gb
I am running the 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 and cannot connect to the Internet. Everything appears to be working (and recognized) yet no connection. My Atheros eth0 (wired) works all the time but my eth2 (wireless Broadcom wireless does not under Ubuntu Linux) everything works well under Windows 7 (dual boot). Using WEP security. Shouldn't eth1 be the next scheme after eth0? Would eth1 be controlled by my wireless switch whereas eth2 not?
I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?
I have a laptop that has some issues with the hardware. I cannot get the dvd drive to recognize, nor can I get a usb stick to boot on startup despite setting the bios to do so. It's an averatec 3200 and it supports booting from usb. I have removed the HDD and put it in an IDE external case and formatted it with my macbook as FAT32 for now. I'd really like to install linux (linux mint 9 xfce or other) to the external HDD, then put it back into the laptop.
When I searched the forums and google, external hard drive installs center around either usb sticks (which I can't use) or installing to an external HDD for portability. I want to be able to install from a second laptop (I have both PC and mac available), remove the drive and install into the laptop the drive came from and finish the setup. I can not use a live CD or USB to do this because the CD drive is not working and I have yet to get a usb stick to boot (it goes straight to the HDD even though I changed the order in bios).
A friend of mine has an old emachines with XP on it and at first it would complain it had to test the disk and turn off in less then a minute. Now it won't do anything except run the power supply and cpu fans while the start button is pressed. I checked for power on the blue , purple ,red and orange wires while 14 and 15 were jumped on the power supply. There are no lEDs on the board and no beeps. I disconnected all the peripherals also
i updated tis morning to 10.04 on a compaq netbook and only problem is that the system minimizes all windows.... Can't kee a window on top for more than 2 secs. It seems that all is ok,any program i klick runs but it immediatly minimizes and won't stay open. I cant do anything,i have to type one character at a time.
I try install debian squeeze or sid to my notebook acer aspire timeline X 5820tI try mini iso and netinstall but isntallation not detect eth0 (Atheros AR8151 PCI-E gigabit ethernet) wlan0(Atheros 5B93 wirelles network adapter) is detected but not working.I try DVD http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekl ... -DVD-1.isourning is OK, but on boot edd: not reed sector and long numberError not configured file found or ......md5of burn dvd is ok, i burn it 2x, K3B, Brasero, burning is complete, check of burning files too but, not boot (I try boot on my desktop PC and its OK, but on notebook dvd not boot.
Do a 64 bits version will work better if the cpu is 64 bits capable ? Can I remove all added stuffs on Archbang or CTKArchLive to return to plain Archlinux with openbox that I can configure myself easily, so I can install Archlinux faster ?
I tried and installed Arch properly but I need to install the broadcom bcm 4727 driver (b43,wl,sta,open source), which driver do I need and how can I install it by my usb on Archlinux CLI made with base, sudo and wireless_tools only ?
I have a toshiba notebook with Windows XP and Ubuntu studio. I removed Ubuntu partitions with the idea to install classic Ubuntu, but... grub don't recognize Windows to boot. I formatted the hard disk as slave from another PC. I installed Windows again trying to delete the grub, but, it is already there. I am trying to repair grub from Windows with: FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, fdisk /mbr from MS DOS, but that is not working.
Any suggestions: - To delete the hard disk complete and start again everything. (deleting grub also) or - To repair boot sector for Windows

Today i used the mini CD command-line install, got the system running at the terminal, but installing xorg or gnome and rebooting results again in fail. Tried to edit xorg.conf through nano, after sudo apt-get install but before reboot, but was fail again (couldn't open the file). I dont know exactly if its the gnome or the X the issue, because i tried at the same notebook the ubuntu 8.04, the wallpaper pops up but it freezes after, i cannot use the X. Both cd's are checksum valid originals from canonical
is there any ways to install gnome and x in the terminal, edit the xorg.conf with anything that solve the problem and reboot? update 23:11PM: I found it, its a issue with old intel graphic cards. i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa in the boot parameters and i could use the installer in the lucid live cd. but now i need to edit the grub to always boot with this parameter.
The machine I'm running is a Sony Vaio VPCCW290X notebookIntel Core i5 processorNvidia GeForce 310M video cardI am planning on making Debian my main OS but I am experimenting with installing it on a usb drive first. I am new to linux so this has been a learning experience so far. I finally got the grub installed correctly for the external hard drive to boot up into Debian. I installed the minimal network install so I should just be going to a console prompt. After booting it it goes for a short time and then the screen shuts off, not just black. I tried ctrl-alt-f1/f2 which didn't do anything. I am able to reboot by ctrl-alt-del though. If I try to boot into the second option it goes further before shutting off. Using a live cd it does the same thing unless I choose the fail-safe option. When I choose that it boots up correctly. If I hook up an external monitor it will switch over to it when the screen shuts off, so I know it's not the video card
