General :: Windows 7 - Can I Boot My Notebook Via ESata Pci-xpress Card

Jun 29, 2010

I would like to boot directly from an external hard disk to improve performance over my internal notebook hard disk. My notebook has no native eSata jack but a pci express card.

As my BIOS doesn't support the card on boot time so no way directly booting it.

My question is, is it possible to work around this issue by using an USB stick or similar with a boot loader like grub and if so, will this only work for Linux or Windows as well?

General :: Boot An SD Card On A Notebook That Does Not Have BIOS Support For Booting From The SD Slot?

Feb 9, 2011

I'm trying to boot an SD card on a notebook that does not have BIOS support for booting from the SD slot. Using various how-to's I've figured out how to add additional SD card modules to the initrd.img file on a bootable USB drive such that I can boot Linux installed on the SD card.

However, best I can tell, it loads the kernel and initrd.img from the USB and everything else from the SD card. What I really want is to load the necessary SD modules from the USB and then chainload the SD card such that whatever kernel is on the SD card is loaded instead. Is it possible to chainload to another bootable device after the kernel (with the SD module additions) has already been loaded?

Fedora Installation :: Changing To Boot Off ESATA Drive

Mar 17, 2009

This machine has two internal HDDs which are dedicated to Vista (ergh). For various reasons, I elected to use an external drive for the installation of Linux. When I installed Fedora, I didn't have an eSATA cable, so I installed it via USB. if I change the boot device so it boots off the USB drive, the machine apparently remaps the drive to BIOS drive 0. However, when Linux boots, it'll still be considered sdc. So far so good. However, when I plug in the eSATA cable and try to boot Linux that way, the machine will boot off the internal sda because the only available option is "Internal Hard Drive." (And yes, the eSATA is working properly.)

I obviously need to install GRUB on the first drive, and it will then let me choose between Vista and Linux. I've done this kind of thing before on other machines and haven't had to much of a problem. However, running 'grub-install /dev/sda' resulted simply in blowing away my Vista boot loader, and a Grub installation that would hang at a black screen. Which of course then resulted in a plethora of pain trying to fix it with Microsoft's deliberately pathetic engineering. What did I do wrong there? And incidentally, the external hard drive isn't always going to be hooked up, so I don't want to be dependent on it to get into Vista.

Hardware :: Which Video Card Is Being Used On Notebook With Two Cards?

Jul 8, 2010

I have this Asus UL30VT notebook, with two video cards, an Nvidia G210M (which apparently isn't supported by Nvidia for Linux, but I've read somewhere that it's possible to make it work) and an Intel card (I can't find the model name). On Windows, it is possible to switch between these two cards for battery saving reasons. Anyway, I don't really care about this on Linux. I would just like to make the Nvidia card work somehow.

One of my doubts is: how do I know if Linux is detecting both video cards? What I'd like to know is, how can I make sure whether Linux is correctly detecting the Nvidia card or not? Is lspci enough? And if we suppose that Linux is aware of the presence of the Nvidia card, how do I know which card it's using? Right now I can infer it's using the Intel card from the X log, but is there any other way (I don't know, any "/proc/..." files) to know?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot On Notebook With 2 Internal HDs

May 16, 2010

installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook. Currently, I am using IBM Thinkpad X31 with docking that has swappable 2nd HD. The 1st internal HD has WIN XP on it. I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?

General :: Need Windows App To Clone CF Card

Jun 19, 2010

I have a computer-based device used in my Ophthalmology office that uses a Compact Flash card as its primary hard drive. This device, and the CF card, are Linux based, and so the card has Linux partitions on it. I need to be able to clone this CF card, using a Windows computer, onto another CF card, to replace one that has failed in one of these devices. Neither Windows XP nor Vista is able to do anything with it.

I use Casper to clone Windows hard drives and partitions which are FAT32, NTFS, etc., but it does not recognize or work with Linux partitions. I need a simple, hopefully free or inexpensive, program that I can install on a Windows XP or Vista computer, which can clone the good Linux based CF card (which would be connected via a USB Reader, or a built-in Media reader) onto a brand-new unformatted CF card that I would buy, and similarly connected.

General :: Unable To Boot Into Windows Vista Installation And Only Boot Fedora

Jan 28, 2010

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.

So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).

As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:
