Allot of Crazy things happened lately. A few problems happened and I fixed them. In the end I have 3 partitions of ubuntu net book remix and 1 for windows 7. I never reinstalled windows so could I do a system restore (in windows)to go back and then reinstall 1 partition of ubuntu net book remix.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.
My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:

chainloader +1
boot
This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32
I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and I have been keeping it updated via update manager.Last night the update manager popped up and I selected to update all required updates without checking what the updates were.While shutting down I noticed that I needed to reboot to complete the update, so I rebooted.After reboot the wireless network card disappeared. So I moved the PC and plugged in the ethernet cable. Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot.What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything!How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.
I want to wipe out my Windows partition and reinstall due to sluggishness. I plan to use Windows instructions as if it was on a hard drive by itself. Will this affect the multi-boot capability or the Linux partition in any way? Would it be easier to reformat and partition the entire hard drive and re-install both OSes? I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP.

Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.

My old-ish Dell laptop is currently running Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 9.10. I originally installed 2000 to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the laptop for general use, but in practise Ubuntu is running great and sees far more use than the Win2K installation so I've decided to create a stripped-down (i.e. non-networked) XP installation purely to run a few favourite audio applications.
I plan to do a fresh Windows install and wipe the current C: partition. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of the GRUB bootloader. Will it simply recognise the new XP installation? Obviously I will back up my data before I continue, but are there any other precautions to take with respect to dual-booting? I could do without having to reinstall Ubuntu too!
My address book recently got corrupted and I was unable to restore the e-mails, however looking at my abook.mab file I could see that all of the e-mail addresses were in there. I wrote a php script to create a new tab delimited text file, which you can import into Thunderbird. I used it to recover about 7300 contacts and it seems to work well for the most part. Just change 'abook.mab' to point to your actual corrupt abook.mab file or put it in the same directory as the script.

I had an older PC on which I had two SATA drives and an IDE one and on the latter I had Windows 7 installed (I kept it on that drive since I'm not using Windows 7 that often, I'm primarily using Debian as my daily go-to OS), but since then I got a new PC which has no connectivity for IDE, so I had to decommision the drive, and before I did that, I backed up the Windows 7 partition (and the second partition which I used mostly for storing sofware and stuff that I wouldn't want to get wiped after a fresh Windows install) using dd.
Not reading up on this on the internet, doing so with the intention to restore the partition image on the same spot on the disk, but since the SSD is larger than the IDE drive, I made the partitions on it bigger, so there's no chance the Windows 7 partition to be on the same spot on the disk. I tried booting into Windows 7 from GRUB after it successfully detected the Win7 install on the second partition on the SSD, but it just leaves me with a blank screen with a blinking white cursor, so I'm guessing it's not going to fly again. So my question to you: is it possible to ressurect the Windows 7 installation, avoiding having to reinstall Windows? (which would severly complicate things, having to backup and wipe the Debian install I have on the first partition...)
So far I've tried this to fix the Windows 7 install by pointing at the right disk "coordinates": [URL] ...., but I can't seem to get it to work, all I get is some error in regards to not being able to detect the disk's geometry (I think it was the number heads I couldn't figure out to input in the command line), so I couldn't fix it.
restore of Win XP partition - he wants to be able to "press the button" and restore the whole partition with XP using Clonezilla. Is it possible - to do this restore without Clonezilla CD? Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.

i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.
I installed Ubuntu a while ago now and I like it but when I installed it I removed windows and now its starting to annoy me. I cannot sync my ipod touch, I can't play some of my games because they are all meant for windows and wine does not work for then so what I want to do is uninstall ubuntu and reinstall windows xp, then I will reinstall ubuntu and this time around I will make a dual boot. Only one problem, I don't know how to uninstall ubuntu.

I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9

The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.
I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know the install is diffrent for 10.10 so figured removing would be diffrent as well. but im wanting to remove ubuntu and give back the partition to windows. i love ubuntu but i am a photographer and find myself in windows to use photoshop and the many plugins i have so much that at this point i would rather just have the extra space back for windows. and once i get a new desktop for photo work my laptop will be back on ubuntu!

I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhilst in fedora i deleted files off my second hard drive to free up some space, i deleted over 10gb worth of data. When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it
