Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel 2.6.35 On Dell D810 Notebook ?
Dec 31, 2010
I am using a Dell D810 Notebook and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with all the latest upgrades, I would like to know if it is ok to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. I have read the release notes and I am not certain if Linux kernel 2.6.35 supports my Notebook. Below I have included out put for cat /proc/cpuinfo and x86info -a
Ubuntu 10.04 works very well on my Dell D810.

The kernel-PAE-2.6.30.5-43 upgrade will not boot on my Dell 1545 notebook. The initialization stops and the systems freezes right at the point that the login prompt should appear. I do not have invidia drivers. I have Intel video drivers. Also there is a loud 'pop' in the sound system early in the initialization sequence. For the time being, I have removed the 2.6.30.5-43 upgrade via yum.

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Latitude E6410 I have neither Ethernet connection or WIFI connection.
If I could figure out how to download the kernel source for ubuntu 9.04 then I can build the devices into the kernel and get them working.
Where can I find the source for Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic.
Also, there are names for the Ubuntu. How to figure out the name of my OS?
Note, I tried to install Ubuntu 10 but the screen was blank after I booted off the installation CD.

I have a busted XP notebook, no CD, no boot from USB. I have the option of booting from network, my provider wants to charge me to set up a static IP address I'm hoping to just plug in to my working 8.04 install with a cat5 cable or through a simple workgroup switch & get the basics installed where would I find such a procedure?
the gateway notbook hangs, part way through the restore [xp] process, I can only get to bios & restore, no dos prompt I don't care about any of the info or having XP I know the HDD may be bad

I just installed Ubuntu 10.4.2 on a M622 eMachines notebook. I have no audio what-so-ever even after installing an ALSA mixer and updating everything. I can control every option as if the sound drivers were functioning fine. I've made sure nothing is muted and I've checked the headphones as well. What's strange is that the microphone input works and I'm able to record with sound recorder (according to the audio in level meter). The only thing I can think of is that the wrong drivers are installed but I'm not sure how about changing them or what to change them to. Here is a copy of my ALSA report:
Code:

I'm trying to get WOL (Wake On Lan -suspend and hibernate don't work either) working in Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 on the above computer for a family member but seem to not be getting anywhere! WOL is enabled correctly I verified that after shutting down in windows XP that the computer came on with WOL. I have tried the following:
Enable wol
Code:
ethtool -s eth0 wol g
The computer shuts-down but won't wake up by WOL packet. Make sure the Ethernet (MAC0) can wake up PC
Code:
echo "MAC0" > /proc/acpi/wakeup
The computer shuts-down but won't wake up by WOL packet
Kernel parameters:
Code:
acpi=off
Code:
apm=power_off acpi=off
Code:
acpi=nopci
With all of the above, the computer doesn't not power down after shut down. The power button light is still on and has to be pressed to turn it off. Here is the strange thing: WOL works after manually tuning it off! I tried inserting apm module but it is not available.

installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook. Currently, I am using IBM Thinkpad X31 with docking that has swappable 2nd HD. The 1st internal HD has WIN XP on it. I had successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2nd HD and everything work properly with GRUB menu asking which OS to boot when start the computer. However, when I have to swap 2nd HD out with DVD-Drive or undock, it won't allow me to boot into Windows XP -> showing device is not found and prompt to "Grub Rescue" command. It will only boot if I retain 2nd HD in the dock. So I will like to know how to make Window XP boot without 2nd HD, and still able to get in Ubuntu when I insert 2nd HD into the dock?

I just install Ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded the Smartboard install. After I click the program to install it starts thinking then asks for my password. I enter my password it takes it then stops thinking. All other functions work just fine apart from the install. It hasn't started yet. I have a feeling that it would install just fine if I could take of the whole asking for the password nonsense. is there a way to do that.

I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?

I have a laptop that has some issues with the hardware. I cannot get the dvd drive to recognize, nor can I get a usb stick to boot on startup despite setting the bios to do so. It's an averatec 3200 and it supports booting from usb. I have removed the HDD and put it in an IDE external case and formatted it with my macbook as FAT32 for now. I'd really like to install linux (linux mint 9 xfce or other) to the external HDD, then put it back into the laptop.
When I searched the forums and google, external hard drive installs center around either usb sticks (which I can't use) or installing to an external HDD for portability. I want to be able to install from a second laptop (I have both PC and mac available), remove the drive and install into the laptop the drive came from and finish the setup. I can not use a live CD or USB to do this because the CD drive is not working and I have yet to get a usb stick to boot (it goes straight to the HDD even though I changed the order in bios).

I tried to update to 2.6.31-20 kernel but I think I messed it up, because when I click on it in the GRUB it starts to load but then it goes back to the dell boot up screen and I have to use the older one in order to get onto ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I have a problem with my network interfaces on Dell poweredge server. I have two broadcom 5708 Gigabit network cards and they were working fine with my old kernel (2.6.18). recently, i have updated the kernel to 2.6.35(actually installed a new distribution Ubuntu 10.10) Since then, I have problem connecting to my server, the output of ifconfig shows that both NIC`s are working and assigned IP, i can connect to the system from both local machines and through internet. but sometimes suddenly the connection through internet is disconnected (some times to one NIC and sometimes to both!).
here is the result of:
$ethtool -i eth#
driver: bnx2
version: 2.0.15
firmware-version: 5.2.7 bc 5.0.4 ipms 1.6.0
bus-info: 0000:06:00.0
I was wondering if anyone here has had the same problem before and can share a solution with me?

I have a toshiba notebook with Windows XP and Ubuntu studio. I removed Ubuntu partitions with the idea to install classic Ubuntu, but... grub don't recognize Windows to boot. I formatted the hard disk as slave from another PC. I installed Windows again trying to delete the grub, but, it is already there. I am trying to repair grub from Windows with: FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, fdisk /mbr from MS DOS, but that is not working.
Any suggestions:
- To delete the hard disk complete and start again everything. (deleting grub also)
or
- To repair boot sector for Windows

Today i used the mini CD command-line install, got the system running at the terminal, but installing xorg or gnome and rebooting results again in fail. Tried to edit xorg.conf through nano, after sudo apt-get install but before reboot, but was fail again (couldn't open the file). I dont know exactly if its the gnome or the X the issue, because i tried at the same notebook the ubuntu 8.04, the wallpaper pops up but it freezes after, i cannot use the X. Both cd's are checksum valid originals from canonical
is there any ways to install gnome and x in the terminal, edit the xorg.conf with anything that solve the problem and reboot? update 23:11PM: I found it, its a issue with old intel graphic cards. i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa in the boot parameters and i could use the installer in the lucid live cd. but now i need to edit the grub to always boot with this parameter.

The machine I'm running is a Sony Vaio VPCCW290X notebookIntel Core i5 processorNvidia GeForce 310M video cardI am planning on making Debian my main OS but I am experimenting with installing it on a usb drive first. I am new to linux so this has been a learning experience so far. I finally got the grub installed correctly for the external hard drive to boot up into Debian. I installed the minimal network install so I should just be going to a console prompt. After booting it it goes for a short time and then the screen shuts off, not just black. I tried ctrl-alt-f1/f2 which didn't do anything. I am able to reboot by ctrl-alt-del though. If I try to boot into the second option it goes further before shutting off. Using a live cd it does the same thing unless I choose the fail-safe option. When I choose that it boots up correctly. If I hook up an external monitor it will switch over to it when the screen shuts off, so I know it's not the video card

I have read all of the articles I could find on the problems. I am using the lilo bootloader as grub doesn't work. I have also added pci=nomsi to my lilo.conf and ran lilo -v. I can get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-8.el5. However I can't get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686.rpm. When I boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686 the system hangs after it prints bios data check successful. I tried adding suppress-boot-time-BIOS-data to my lilo.conf (I ran lilo -v after the change) and the system still hangs. The Optiplex 320 is running bios 1.1.12
Why won't newer kernels work? Is there a way to get more information to print before the hang to aid in debugging?

I used to have F9 on my HP pavilion dv8000. I have been trying to install F10 (and even CentOS 5.3) on it and, during the installation process, when I choose the keyboard layout (english) it doesn't go on. Weird because I am using the same disk I successfully used to install F10 on my desktop. What could it be? The same problem happens when I make the installation process in text mode...

For reasons I can't even begin to figure out, the number pad does NOT work.i can get the num lock light to come on, but pressing the keys there produces no love at all. Right before I installed F10, my F8 x64 had been working flawlessly for a VERY long time and I have been able to verify that the keypad still functions both with the M$ Windoze Vi$ta virus and a live Knoppix CD.Since this is the first time I have had this issue, I don't even know where to look to consider solving this.
I did try the System->Preferences->Hardware->Keyboard and all of the HP layouts listed there, but I still can't get anything more than the Num Lock light to come on and go out.

I was trying to install openSUSE 11.2 on Dell XPS Studio, model PP35L, but loading kernel hangs at 94%, I tried F5 for Safe Settings, No APIC, No Local ACPI, Check Installation Media, but it still hangs at 94%. Installation works fine on older computer. Is it because openSuse kernel doesn't recognize the i5 Core processor yet? If this is caused by a driver, is there a way to display the kernel messages and what would be the kernel boot options to disable loading of that driver?

I've installed ubuntu 10.04 onto my Dell Latitude e6510 (through the wubi installer), but I can't get anything except a black screen. I'm pretty new to ubuntu, but after a bit of looking around at graphics issues I found a bunch of boot parameters and tried different combinations of them. i915.modeset=0 Gave me the purple loading screen, until the screen went black and I got flashing caps lock and scroll lock lights.xforcevesa gave me a completely black screen -- not receiving power at all
I also tried noapci, acpi=off, irqpoll, and pci=routeirq as parameters. None of those had any success.I've also tried letting ubuntu boot with a black screen until I heard the African drums and pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go into the console, but the screen stayed black then as well.
