I just installed ubuntu 10.10. Everything is fine so far except that after the kernel boots I receive the following message:
The disk drive for /media/drv0 is not ready yet or not present
Continue to wait; press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery
After I press S everything goes normally. How can I get rid of this message?
I go and restart ssh and I get this weird message. thought I should be getting ok or fail message, at least thats how I remember it. What do you think?nate@universal-mechanism:~$ sudo service ssh restart
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is my first attempt at Debian. I am running Ubuntu right now and have run puppy linux in the past. I have an iBook G3 that I put Debian PowerPC on. The install went fine. However, on initial startup, when I believe it should boot into the true GUI, it simply gives me horizontal lines that start white and then turn blue. They move slightly. The computer did have a funky graphics chip prior to install, but I am not convinced that it decided to crap out right after the install, especially considering I can see the startup procedure fine.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI foolishly changed the mount point of a partition on a HDD which Linux was not in fact using, and now when I try to start up I get a message box stating:- Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation.
How do I recover the situation. I do not have an up to date recovery disc. I do have a full bootup disc of Suse 11.2 - could I use the opportunity to update without losing all my personal files, or should I use the old 10.2 disks? The first essential is to get something back up and working.
So I just turned my computer on and it was beeping rapidly, and it would stop if I hit "Enter". Also this came on my screen: Cannot set Fray", something like that. It boots fine..just what is that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling about with vortexbox (the one before 1.4 I think), for a while. This is a music ripping and server rpm setup using Fedora 11 as the base.
As it was on a test machine, decided to try changing the logical volume sizes of LogVol00 and LogVol02 to fit a few more cd's on 02 before getting a new pc (just to see how it works).
Logged on and opened up the graphic version of lvm (using gnome). Then selected the LogVol02 logical volume, select edit, changed name to LogVol02-Storage, saved and logged out. Rebooted vortexbox since then its been unable to start properly (is this a kernel panic?).
Read up a lot on lvm on the net, have access to Fedora 11 disk 1, so logged on. Eventually managed (I thought to) to change LogVol02-Storage to LogVol02 using lvrename.
However, still refuses to boot completely.
The message it gives is as follows (sort of): Welcome to Fedora Press '1' to enter interactive startup
Setting up Logical Volume Management: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group 'VolGroup00' now active
*** An error occurred during file system check.

Loving vortexbox appart from this. Will it be easier just to reinstall everything? If so, is there a way of listing all the changes I've done so I can reproduce (I'm thinking of just looking at all the commands I ran on the CLI).
Otherwise, is there a way of listing all of the commands I ran in terminal and piping them into a file so I can see what I need to do to rebuild after reinstalling?
My Ubuntu10.04 installation worked great until recently. But now, this stuff happens:
--On the GNU GRUB ver 1.98-1ubuntu7 list, about half the time I can't move the highlight--no response to keyboard arrow keys, and no response to Enter key--have to wait 60-seconds for highlighted item to start.
--login box's appearance is different, like a different visual scheme/theme
--after login, the screen remains black for a long time before the desktop appears
--when desktop appears, the desktop program icons are gone
--when I launch an app, like the terminal window, it takes a long time for it to open, and after opening, it takes a long time for the prompt tyler9@tyler9-desktop to appear
--Nautilus file browser won't open. When I launch it, I get a button on panel on bottom of screen [like Windows Taskbar] that says "Starting File Browser" but the button disappears, and Nautilus doesn't open. If I enter "nautilus" in terminal window, I get "Bus error."
--Firefox is very slow; typically a delay when I click a tab, and very often, it "darkens"--takes on a darker color and won't respond to clicks. This "darkening" thing happens in other pgms and docs too
--often a long delay when I click anything--panel menu, in a doc, etc
Any ideas for troubleshooting, what the cause(s) might be? My subjective sense is that there's some process(es) running that is causing all this junk. Is there a way to "roll back" to when everything worked OK? Is there an error log or something that might specify why this is happening? [Note: It's not a HW issue--machine is dual-boot Ubuntu/Mint9, and Mint9 works fine--none of the above problems.]
I installed from the live CD, and then it tries to setup MythTV. The screen goes black & there's an outline of a window or dialog box or something. I tried this once before & got outlines like this with outlines of text boxes & pull down fields inside. I could get it to go on to other similar screens by guessing when I was at a "Next" button and hitting Enter.

I have installed ubuntu 11.04 64bits, but now I want to install some oracle tools that support only linux 32 bits. So it is possible to downgrade from 64bit to 32 bits ? or any suggestion to make 64 compatible with 32 bits ?

In the past, whenever I used to update, I would get some sort of GRUB Menu (if that's what it's called) after reboot, and I would have no idea of how to get into Ubuntu. This would eventually lead me to uninstall Ubuntu via Wubi because of frustration and lack of answers on the internet.
But not this time. I want the solution this time so I can be successful in updating. Can anybody PLEASE tell me what happened all of those times, and what I can do to prevent it from happening now?
I have just upgraded from 10.04 (where everything was working fine) to 10.10...I am able to boot in recovery mode (graphic mode is working ok this way), but not in normal mode: just after the purple Maverick boot screen, I get a black screen where my computer stucks, possibly for ever (although I can't be definitive on this point )Do you guys have any thought on what is going on here?I boot once in recovery mode, updated my graphic driver (ati, which was not working well anymre according to catalyst), and then I thought everything would be allright, but it is not the case: still black screen at boot.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThree lucid install, three different situations. The only one that seemed to be a problem was on an old Gateway 450ROG laptop (6 years old). All windows that open in GNOME leave behind faint and persistent outlines long after they are closed. These outlines are not functional and are quite faint. The panels also have a pattern of small dots all over them. Any thoughts? Is the screen dying or is this a fixable issue. I didn't notice the problem until the install. Karmic was working fine. I am probably best considered an "enlightened idiot" in Linux-land. If you need me to give you information, kindly tell me how to go about getting it from the system for you.

I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

I booted the ubuntu and it freezes on th Ubuntu image with the message( i didn't copy the message). i rebooted and freezes again on an image after the Ubuntu Image.So itried recovery mode and it worked. i always use recovery mode to use ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook with Windows 7 and already have my HDD partitioned. I downloaded UNR 9.10 and saved it to a 1GB USB drive. I set my boot priority to have it boot off of USB prior to the HDD and I save/reboot. Upon boot up I get a message to remove devices and reboot. I tried several different BIOS configurations and cannot get it to recognize the boot file. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this corrected? I would like to have a linux dual boot system especially since I'm taking a linux admin course.

The primary hard drive with windows on it died, and since we have been using ubunto 9.10 exclusively, I just removed the dead drive, changed the jumpers on the secondary drive to primary and did a clean install on the drive which presumably formats the disk before installing. When I try to boot from the hard drive i get the following message:

I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and have tried to install it by mounting the image and installing "inside windows." Next, upon reboot and selecting Ubuntu from the windows loader it eventually went to a colorful screen but stayed there... the first time I let it sit there for 20 minutes or so then restarted, uninstalled/reinstalled tried again... then I let it sit there for 3 hours, nothing. Next I tried to mount image and install "demo and full installation." This time upon reboot I choose Ubuntu from the windows loader menu and an error message came up. I will type it out below exactly as I see it because this is the same message that came up when a friend suggested I boot from a USB drive.
