Jul 1, 2010Tried to migrate from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. The downloading occurred without a glitch but soon after installation began I got this message:

May 12, 2010I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

I tried to push keys on the keyboard, nothing helped (I even couldn't put on CAPS or num lock on the keyboard).After a secoind reboot I didn't even saw the Ubuntu logo. When there's a black screen, it just sits there.I have no idea if there was a kernel update (I assume there was, because the system wanted me to reboot)

I've run memtest86 and the RAM passes OK, I've even tried running the install with just 4Gb RAM but without any luck. I've even tried three different CD/DVD drives.10.04 64bit runs from the Live CD without any problems, but 10.10 isn't playing ball...

Jan 19, 2010I am running RHEL 5.3 for Power Series blade technology. I am trying to initiate a halt of the system from runlevel 3 and have the system stay powered on once the system has been halted. This works on RHEL 5.3 for x86/64 system by typing halt -h. However, this same command in RHEL 5.3 for Power Series will halt the system and power it off. I would like the system to remain powered on and sit at the "Your system has been halted" message. how to accomplish this?

Jan 9, 2011I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

But its giving error message at the end of installation when its trying to start the server.

Jan 6, 2010I have a netbook with Windows 7 and already have my HDD partitioned. I downloaded UNR 9.10 and saved it to a 1GB USB drive. I set my boot priority to have it boot off of USB prior to the HDD and I save/reboot. Upon boot up I get a message to remove devices and reboot. I tried several different BIOS configurations and cannot get it to recognize the boot file. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this corrected? I would like to have a linux dual boot system especially since I'm taking a linux admin course.

The primary hard drive with windows on it died, and since we have been using ubunto 9.10 exclusively, I just removed the dead drive, changed the jumpers on the secondary drive to primary and did a clean install on the drive which presumably formats the disk before installing. Dec 29, 2010I am just now starting to go deeper than the surface of my computer so I am very much a beginner. I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and have tried to install it by mounting the image and installing "inside windows." Next, upon reboot and selecting Ubuntu from the windows loader it eventually went to a colorful screen but stayed there... the first time I let it sit there for 20 minutes or so then restarted, uninstalled/reinstalled tried again... then I let it sit there for 3 hours, nothing. Next I tried to mount image and install "demo and full installation." This time upon reboot I choose Ubuntu from the windows loader menu and an error message came up. I will type it out below exactly as I see it because this is the same message that came up when a friend suggested I boot from a USB drive.

May 7, 2011A couple of months ago I bought a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Rather than strip the hard drive and go with Ubuntu exclusively, I left W7 on and set up Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual boot installation. All was well for a month or more and now suddenly W7 won't boot. The Windows error message I get is The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible I've purged and reinstalled Grub2 several times with no luck. Also tried Windows fixmbr which allowed W7 to boot but made Ubuntu inaccessible. Below is the output of the boot_info_script.

Aug 1, 2011I currently tri-boot windows 7, ubuntu 10.10 and backtrack linux. I want to have a fresh install for ubuntu 11.04 (replacing 10.10), but the disk freezes when I hit try it now. I don't like to install a new version of Ubuntu if the try it now does not work (as I worry that the installation won't work). I have a studio xps 17 with a quad core core i7 Q720, ATI Radeon 4670 (1 GB I think), Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet, Intel Wifi link 5300 AGN, 4GB ddr 3 RAM.

Sep 1, 2011I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on an external disk (500gb) giving 12gb to Ubuntu.
After the installation process finished I did reboot. When BIOS loaded instead of the Ubuntu boot screen a message from the monitor presented like this:

Jan 5, 2010At first I tried the using the CDROM to install the server but around 8% through it could not talk to the CDROM anymore. I did attempt this a few times including re-seat the CDROM and it stopped at the same point every time. I then used the Mini install and that worked. However, after I rebooted I received the this error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Gives No Signal Message During Install
May 23, 2010So my computer works reasonably fast running XP (old 3GHz processor with 512RAM), but every so often it simply freezes. I've tried all I can to fix this, but sometimes when I boot up XP it'll get to the window's logo then freeze, sometimes it'll get all the way to the desktop and then freeze, and sometimes it'll start up, run fine for an hour or two then freeze. By freeze, I mean the screen doesn't update, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. Updating NVIDIA drivers doesn't seem to help - some make it worse! So I've had enough, and decided to download Wubi to try Ubuntu on it. I'm not ready to remove windows just yet (lots of data on this machine) and so I don't really want to try dual-booting yet.
Wubi downloads and runs in Windows fine. When I go to restart, after picking Ubuntu from the menu it shows a little text (I think about installation, and press Esc for menu) then my monitor gives a "No Signal" message. So I try restarting (pressing the button), and pressing Esc to bring up the menu. I tried all 5ish options, and "Safe graphics mode" and "ACPI workarounds" seem to last longer, but the same error occurs, before it has even prompted me (still doing its own thing). So I can get up to GRUB, and even get into the grub> prompt. I tried adding irqpoll and/or all_generic_ide to the boot thing (pressing e in the grub menu), but that hasn't helped. I'm unsure of how to find what hardware my computer has (only computer, don't have receipt), but I know "NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT".

After restart ubuntu was showing on multi boot screen, selected it. Then the system asked me to ESC installation or not, i didn't Esc. Jul 3, 2010i'v installed ubuntu 10.04 on 3 different desktops and 1 laptop. It has gone flawlessly on all 4. i a want to install it on my hp to dual boot(the others i just wiped the drives) but when i tell it to boot from the cd at first it looks like it might work, with the purple page, but after a few minutes, before i get to the install options i get an error message. my current operating systime is windows and i have an hp pavilion. with 2.5 gigs of ram and a descent graphics card.
