I was working on our PC and screwed up my logical partition. Not much of a concern there but the problem starts when I was trying to repair them. My gparted says that my whole HD is empty. In fact, when I try to install an OS, it wanted to install it on the whole HD (80-G).

This was solver by adding my account to the "video" and "audio" groups (I wonder howcome it worked before?).Then, my keyboard stopped working in X. It would work fine in CLI mode, but as soon as I start X not even the Num Lock LED worked! I think I glimpsed that it might be due to a missing keymap or something, but I don't know. I got my computer back by making Xfce's keyboard settings override X, but it still isn't right, and I can't use anything other than Xfce.Recently I tried to burn a CD/DVD but neither Brasero, K3B, nor cdrecord could detect the DVD burner.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have a nameserver which we moved over from an old server & ip a couple of weeks ago and updated all our dns records.Currently, our dns provider shows the proper records for our server, and if we dig the server at our dns provider we get the results. However, if we ping the server, or dig it and don't specify our server we get the old ip address.An opendns cache check also sporadically returns the proper results from some of its locations but generally returns the old ip address. Does anyone have any suggestions because this bewildering me.

Our server has 4 1.5TB disks and the idea was to make a RAID 5 out of it.Now here is the problem:When I used only 1 disk that is nfs partition was of 1.5TB, I got fine speed(30MBps), but with multiple disks whether I am making 3TB (Raid 10) or 4.5TB (Raid 5), I get a really poor speed of 5-6MBps. I/O just waits.But for all above cases, disk I/O locally works fine.Does anyone knows any NFS limitation that is causing this problem?

Sometimes I can't record anything using the sound recorder and the immediate muting of the loud speaker when i plugged in my headphone doesn't work, but then all of sudden it worked and then the problem might occur again. It's like, in some period the audio works perfectly well as if there's not bug, and then it goes wrong.What I noticed is that the problem reoccur when I shutdown/restart my PC and after few minutes/hours/days it works fine again. Does anyone know why this happens and help me solve this problem?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently switched back to Ubuntu and I eventually had to sync my new ipod. I've been getting this problem where every time I sync with either GTKpod or Rhythmbox my ipod music is acting weird. It shows new music that I've added but when i choose to play it skips to the next track that then skips to the next track, and so forth. Its as if my ipod is filled with songs that don't even last 0.0 seconds! But the songs completely play in Rhythmbox, so I don't think its a problem with the files themselves.

I've been able to get to all the subdomains just fine for the last couple weeks from several different machines.Now something weird's happening:
I CAN ping wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from a local machine
I CAN see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from a local machine
I CAN'T ping wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T do an nslookup on wiki.galapagos.office from the DNS server itself
I CAN'T see wiki.galapagos.office in a browser from the DNS server itself
And I COULD do all these things before. I don't know exactly when things went south because I almost never do anything from the DNS server itself.
We are running a sendmail(8.13.8-2.el5) service on one of our server running RHEl5
When I try to mail from one of the machines connected to the server on our private network, log file on that machine shows that the mail has been sent and also there is no mail in the queue, but when I check the server, there is no mail received, not even any status on log file. Did anyone experience anything like this or any idea about this problem?
So I just turned my computer on and it was beeping rapidly, and it would stop if I hit "Enter". Also this came on my screen: Cannot set Fray", something like that. It boots fine..just what is that?
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I fired up the installer, after asking to test the media (which I skipped) and starting up the actual installer (anakonda, akonadi, whatever the name was, can't remember now and too lazy to look it up), it seemed to start up fine, except I couldn't get the wizard to show up. I did see the cursor, and occasionally I would get the "searching for storage devices" message (I restarted it a few times to see if I would get it working), but nothing. I also tried random key presses (namely F12,F1-F4), and after some time got a message saying that I had to enter the root password, so I presumably got to the root password screen blind...? (meaning that the installer apparently is ther, I just don't see it?)
After several restarts, though, I managed to get the wizard visible (just luck?), so I went ahead with it, but apparently I messed it up, when I rebooted I didn't get the screen visible again, after some random keypresses I got to the login prompt but I obviously hadn't created any accounts, so :/ I tried booting from the DVD to the rescue mode and manually adduser-ing from the console, but when I tried logging on, it would just come up with some kinda bluetooth-related error message and then hang on there with only the background image on the screen. I didn't try the basic video driver thingy yet because this didn't seem like a video driver issue (well, not entirely anyways), and I need my 3D acceleration, so...
Basically, I'd be glad if anyone knows what's up with the installer, and if it's not fixable as such, would installing with the basic video driver and then installing the proprietary drivers afterwards be all right? Sorry for the wall-of-text, though, it's just one of those days, it's bedtime and I get carried away...

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

--On the GNU GRUB ver 1.98-1ubuntu7 list, about half the time I can't move the highlight--no response to keyboard arrow keys, and no response to Enter key--have to wait 60-seconds for highlighted item to start.
--login box's appearance is different, like a different visual scheme/theme
--after login, the screen remains black for a long time before the desktop appears
--when desktop appears, the desktop program icons are gone
--when I launch an app, like the terminal window, it takes a long time for it to open, and after opening, it takes a long time for the prompt tyler9@tyler9-desktop to appear
--Nautilus file browser won't open. When I launch it, I get a button on panel on bottom of screen [like Windows Taskbar] that says "Starting File Browser" but the button disappears, and Nautilus doesn't open. If I enter "nautilus" in terminal window, I get "Bus error."
--Firefox is very slow; typically a delay when I click a tab, and very often, it "darkens"--takes on a darker color and won't respond to clicks. This "darkening" thing happens in other pgms and docs too
--often a long delay when I click anything--panel menu, in a doc, etc
Any ideas for troubleshooting, what the cause(s) might be? My subjective sense is that there's some process(es) running that is causing all this junk. Is there a way to "roll back" to when everything worked OK? Is there an error log or something that might specify why this is happening? [Note: It's not a HW issue--machine is dual-boot Ubuntu/Mint9, and Mint9 works fine--none of the above problems.]
I installed from the live CD, and then it tries to setup MythTV. The screen goes black & there's an outline of a window or dialog box or something. I tried this once before & got outlines like this with outlines of text boxes & pull down fields inside. I could get it to go on to other similar screens by guessing when I was at a "Next" button and hitting Enter.

In the past, whenever I used to update, I would get some sort of GRUB Menu (if that's what it's called) after reboot, and I would have no idea of how to get into Ubuntu. This would eventually lead me to uninstall Ubuntu via Wubi because of frustration and lack of answers on the internet.
But not this time. I want the solution this time so I can be successful in updating. Can anybody PLEASE tell me what happened all of those times, and what I can do to prevent it from happening now?

However, the cd I burned from it seems to bypass the usual Ubuntu menu where you get to choose what you want to do (run the live cd without changing your computer, check the cd for errors, install, etc) and it attempts to install itself!! The installation process halts when some sort of error is encountered.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis just started happening, but I haven't logged out or rebooted in a while, so I'm not sure what could be causing this. I have setup some keyboard shortcuts to use the Win modifier key (Mod4, Super, whatever). The keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE list it as the Win key so that is how I will refer to it. Some example shortcuts: Win+t starts a terminal, Win+m toggles windows maximize mode. I had these setup and they were working fine on this install that I've had for about a month, but they stopped working today. I can still use Ctrl, Alt, and Shift as modifier keys and they work fine.
I open the keyboard shortcuts utility in KDE Control Center (kcontrol) and start to set a new keyboard shortcut. i.e. I click on the button to "build" a keyboard shortcut. I can press the Win key and it shows that it detects it, but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is just set as 't' instead of Win+t. I can also push shift+win and that shows in the builder but when I press the 't' key, the shortcut is now set to 'shift+t', so it seems like the Win key is acting funky.

I don't know any other way to describe it. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and before yesterday everything was working flawlessly. Then my mouse started acting erratic and after a few battery changes I narrowed it do to adobe. This is because I was experiencing freezes with my desktop as well as my browser. I use firefox as my default and I couldn't open up tabs or even close the browser. Only way for me to close the browser as to use the windows command ctrl d to minimize firefox, right click and close it. After running ubuntu tweak and then update manager I noticed it pulled down a new version of adobe. Everything worked like a charm until today.
Now I have the same problem. I looked to see what updates were being pulled down that could be causing this weird behaviour. The only thing I can figure is jitsi. However, I've never really used this application. It's frustrating to use ubuntu right now cause I can't do any work. This browser is open in another workspace and if I open another application this will freeze. My taskbar is basically frozen so after I post this I'll have to use ctrl d to minimize this and then right click to close it again.
by now I have 10 servers for hpc, power computing oriented. My users need to launch several processes using qmake. The users are used to work with ubuntu 9.10, and the software from the repositories is switable for them. I've deployed ubuntu 9.10 to all 10 servers (pxe rocks). By now we work with parallel-ssh and cluster-ssh, which allows as to launch the same process to all servers. With this tools this tools the servers remain as independent but with the same software and the same launched command. Now we would like to go to next step and see all the servers as a single one with all the resources from the other 9 as if was its resources. The difference would be substantial in time to process and also time to design the command to launch.
View 13 Replies View RelatedThree lucid install, three different situations. The only one that seemed to be a problem was on an old Gateway 450ROG laptop (6 years old). All windows that open in GNOME leave behind faint and persistent outlines long after they are closed. These outlines are not functional and are quite faint. The panels also have a pattern of small dots all over them. Any thoughts? Is the screen dying or is this a fixable issue. I didn't notice the problem until the install. Karmic was working fine. I am probably best considered an "enlightened idiot" in Linux-land. If you need me to give you information, kindly tell me how to go about getting it from the system for you.
