I installed from the live CD, and then it tries to setup MythTV. The screen goes black & there's an outline of a window or dialog box or something. I tried this once before & got outlines like this with outlines of text boxes & pull down fields inside. I could get it to go on to other similar screens by guessing when I was at a "Next" button and hitting Enter.

View 1 Replies View RelatedBeing a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

I have a 32gb flash drive that I'd like to install Ubuntu 10.10 too. As if it were just a normal installation. Boot loader and all just on the stick.I would be attempting this from a Windows system. I do have a burned copy of the Ubuntu 10.10 live CD.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to install Ubuntu on a Gateway laptop that is a 3.06 gigahertz Intel pentium 4 with 1 gig of ram. I'm using the live cd but can't get the computer to boot to the cd. My BIOS is set to boot from cd/rom but I'm not getting the typical Ubuntu menu, which includes install, when I boot the computer. I get the Ubuntu loading screen with the graphical loading dots and when that completes I get a blank screen. I've installed Ubuntu on 4 or 5 other PCs and have never had this problem. I'm trying to completely remove XP and replace with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Normally on booting from the Ubuntu cd I get a menu immediately which includes complete installation, but not with this computer.

The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

--On the GNU GRUB ver 1.98-1ubuntu7 list, about half the time I can't move the highlight--no response to keyboard arrow keys, and no response to Enter key--have to wait 60-seconds for highlighted item to start.
--login box's appearance is different, like a different visual scheme/theme
--after login, the screen remains black for a long time before the desktop appears
--when desktop appears, the desktop program icons are gone
--when I launch an app, like the terminal window, it takes a long time for it to open, and after opening, it takes a long time for the prompt tyler9@tyler9-desktop to appear
--Nautilus file browser won't open. When I launch it, I get a button on panel on bottom of screen [like Windows Taskbar] that says "Starting File Browser" but the button disappears, and Nautilus doesn't open. If I enter "nautilus" in terminal window, I get "Bus error."
--Firefox is very slow; typically a delay when I click a tab, and very often, it "darkens"--takes on a darker color and won't respond to clicks. This "darkening" thing happens in other pgms and docs too
--often a long delay when I click anything--panel menu, in a doc, etc
Any ideas for troubleshooting, what the cause(s) might be? My subjective sense is that there's some process(es) running that is causing all this junk. Is there a way to "roll back" to when everything worked OK? Is there an error log or something that might specify why this is happening? [Note: It's not a HW issue--machine is dual-boot Ubuntu/Mint9, and Mint9 works fine--none of the above problems.]
I am running a Dell Dimension 3000 and I intend to install Ubuntu on it. On it, there is a partition, Dell Utility Partition, which I am hesitant to overwrite. The main partition which I want to install Ubuntu on I formatted in ext4. I try to install Ubuntu from the live cd, but it won't allow me to strictly use the ext4 partition. It insists to either use the entire drive or to have me manually choose the partition. How would I go about doing that? I relatively new to Linux in general

Another question is that i recently find that many useful packages and many dependencies for it are available in a disk of my 64 studio. I am also able to install them just by clicking on that .deb files. But i find it difficult when i need to install dependencies since it take a long time to search and find it though they are available in the same disk. Is there any way to install it easily.I mean to install the packages and there dependencies from cd using some simple terminal command or something.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 and wish to do a clean installation since it has become very cluttered with programs (I had the ooh, that looks like a cool free program I can download and then never use it again syndrome for a while). Since I've been doing some sound stuff with my computer, I decided to try Ubuntu Studio. Anyway, I am at college and do not have any cds available to be able to burn the image on. Is there a way to install Ubuntu onto my current partition (yes, I want to back everything up and erase what is on this partition) without burning the .iso to a disk. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 live disk and a Windows 7 partition on my hard drive. Is this possible with what I have and can anyone give me instructions or link me to something showing how? (I googled for a bit, but must have been missing the magic keywords if it's out there.)

However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.
Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?
I want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic.However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive.The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.

I have just been trying to fix a friends comp, they had Windows crash, and it wouldn't reinstall properly. So I thought I'd put Ubuntu 10:04 on it instead. I burnt the CD today from an ISO that I've used perfectly fine in the past. When I finally got it to boot into the trial desktop. The install button on the desktop wouldn't work. View 2 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu at work on multiple machines. I have instaled one PC ok (although had a few issues with the errno5 install error. Took out some RAM, installed, put RAM back, works). Now trying to reinstall on my main PC and having some very weird issues.When I try to boot off the CD it boots, says there was a problem and takes me into the desktop session, but that session wont actually load up properly. I think its something to do with gnome messing up the activity applet etc. Sometimes I get a blank grey box in the middle that looks like a half loaded error, othertimes it actually loads and tells me 'The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet".'
Other times it asks me if I want to delete the applet or not, but clicking doesnt seem to do anything. mouse pointer works as normal but clicking anything doesntseem to do anything, or it seems to catch up 10 minutes laterBreifly managed to get into another TTY but then that locked up too after I tried 'killall gnome-panel'.I dont think the CD is the issue as the md5 checksum is correct, and my colleagues pc is on 10.04 using this CD. Please help, I dont want to be stuck on 9.10 forever
I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.
Is it possible to create a Live CD install of my existing Ubuntu installation? I mean, to create a Live installation CD of my system as it is now on my pc, with all the programs and utilities that I have installed, so that if the system crashes and is unbootable, I could be able to restore it to the state when I created the Live CD.

So I build us a scrap PC and installed Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I know that these head banging friends of mine will eventually begin installing a lot of crappy software on it. So I made an Admin account for myself and a restricted one for them.
There might be times when they really need to install something in my absence, so I've decided to make an open Live CD for them to have, so they can have some of their own stuff on it. As you might know, when you boot on this CD you can choose between installing Linux Ubuntu or "trying it" What I want to do is that I want them to use the try- thingy so they wont erase the disk over and over. Of course I can just tell them not to install the actually operative. there's a way to disable the "Install" button in some config file or something Similar.

When I click install icon and choose "shrink other partitions" or "use free space for installing", it aborts.I've tried installing on C hard drive and on 300GB-usb-disk with lots of free space; still won't work

I have installed ubuntu 11.04 64bits, but now I want to install some oracle tools that support only linux 32 bits. So it is possible to downgrade from 64bit to 32 bits ? or any suggestion to make 64 compatible with 32 bits ?
