I go and restart ssh and I get this weird message. thought I should be getting ok or fail message, at least thats how I remember it. What do you think?nate@universal-mechanism:~$ sudo service ssh restart
View 3 Replieshi, first i'd like to say that i'm totally new to linux, i was allways using windows.
as i was allways unable to install a good and stable ssh-server on windows, i thought it is time to change to linux. i was able to set up and configure a ssh-server on debian but found out, that fedora 15 looks more userfriendly in first place for me. but now i unfortunately experience problems..
the ssh server was already installed, i changed the service setting to that it starts automatically but after i succesfully connected to the LAN, i cannot access the shh via putty for instance. when i type "service sshd status" it says beside other things: active (running). but when i look at the /var/log/messages, it says those two lines:
sshd.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=255
Unit sshd.service entered failed state.
i searched on google without success, the only thing i found was that someone had the same problem with a bad sshd_config file, but i'm pretty sure that everything is alright with my config-file (i checked it several times).
beside this i cant login on the gui, after the firefox update (??) it always says: a problem has occured and the system can't recover bla bla... so i can only use fedora right now commandline-based.. but with this problem i will deal later on...
I just installed apache2 and i can't restart the service, i get: Code: sudo: /etc/init.d/apache2: command not found

View 10 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I upgraded my old fedora 10 server to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD, but now service httpd restart is broken. I already had to delete the old config file and reinstall apache, but now I can't restart it. I can kill it and then start it manually, but it never stops the running instance and fails to bind the port. I know it's because /var/run/httpd/htpd.pid is in the wrong place, which would be /var/run/httpd.pid, but do I have to make a symlink every time I want to restart it? I edited all the config files to point to the right place, but the system does not honor them. What do I do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.
I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.
Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).
I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?

Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

At first I thought that the following command will restart my sshd server:
/etc/init.d/sshd restart
but there is no "sshd" server in this directory.
How else do I (re)start the ssh server? How can I get the version/release number of the sshd server? Where (in which directory) should I put SSH keys?
I want to make sure sshd service will start after a server reboot. On redhat or centOS I can do "chkconfig sshd on". What's the equivalent command for ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Server 10. I have a requirement to perform an action before the MySQL service starts, and perform another action after MySQL service stops.
I found the init script for MySQL under /etc/init/mysql.conf. I added my thing to the pre-start script there and works fine.
I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.
I'm not really sure what the problem is here, but sshd does seem to start on system boot. tty1 does list "OpenBSD Secure Shell server" at least. Also, # service --status-all; indicates that sshd is running, but if I try and actually ssh into my box, I get a "Connection refused" response.
I am, however able to restart the service manually and everything magically works again. Odd...?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Deskjet D1460. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and HPLIP 3.10.2 that came with the distro. I am in a plan of moving my windows PC to ubuntu in my bussiness, and this is the first of them. Trying to solve all the problems before converting a second one. All seems to work quite well and almost out of the box... and that is a huge step from the last distro i tryied 2 years ago. So, my difficulty now resides on the printing. I am using a small VFox program that manage some of the aspects of the bussiness, in wine. It works without problems, but... when I print, all the pages get printed like 1cm below than when it was printed under windows. The problem is, that I use the printer to fill some forms that came pre-printed, and now, I am printing over the other text instead of the white spaces. I read a little, and try to adjust the HWMargins and the ImageableArea in the ppd of /etc/cups/ppd/ but it was like if I was doing nothing. Do I miss a step? Do I need to restart a service or something after changing the ppd? The margings when using the printer gui from Ubuntu are all in 0, and for that i need like a minus something.

I've after latest jessie update a problem with service samba restart. If I use "service samba restart", there is a timeout (after long time) and error.

It is an openvpn process but I cannot retsrat the service as I alreday have another openvpn service running on the server so when I do openvpn service restart, it won;t know which service to restart.

This is my first use of Ubuntu, but I have previous decent experience on Centos & Mandriva. I've just installed Natty 11.04 on a box that was running a mandriva 2010 - and the network is acting quite strange. When I define a static IP for eth0 through the gui, along with route & dns, it sort of works: ssh is fine, vnc too. However, I have an asterisk running on the box, and it is wild: some packets get lost in the box.
An ngrep shows the packets reaching the interface, but they dont show in asterisk !!! I've done a ufw disable, iptables is empty (why cant I service iptable restart btw ?). ip route list show decent routes (eth0 default); When I switch to DHCP, it is better, but unstable... If i plug a wifi usb stick, it seems to be better... Is there some known issues that could explain this behaviour ?
