I just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, and like most people, I'm getting the black screen during boot. So, I went into the grub edit screen, and I tried every variation of the nomodeset fix I could find. So far, nothing has worked. I don't know what graphics card I have, but it's always given me problems.
View 4 RepliesFollowing the instructions in this post I'm able to boot and work using the live-cd option (Try without installing). The trick is, of course, adding 'nomodeset' to the boot sequence.
Now, my problem is to add 'nomodeset' to the "normal" boot sequence - the one on my hard disk. I'm running Ubuntu on an LG E300 with ATI Radeon Xpress 1250.
Running ubuntu 10.10, had to use nomodeset to successfully boot from cd into "Try ubuntu without installing" thing and install ubuntu.
Edited grub by adding nomodeset after quiet and splash in order to boot from hard disk, still booting that way as I'm writing. The computer is an All In one Pc called ONETWOPWU44. The graphic card is an NVIDIA g210m.
After booting into hard disk I installed the proprietary driver resulting in an alternate of white then gray then black then an Image with red blue and some other colours on the screen, not sure of the order but they came one after an other, right when the login form should appear, I am then able to login by tipping my password into the form and pressing enter, I now that cause I can hear the sound when the system loads but the above described situation continues.
I had the same result with an older nvdia driver it was 253 something, don't remember exactly. Then I downloaded the 260.19.21 driver from nvdia website and installed it, with this one I only got a black screen. I now have a fresh ubuntu 10.10 copy and would like to be guided in making this work. How do I install the driver corectly or how do I enable nouveau 3d support?
I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4. I am having the following problem:
When I attempt to switch from the user that I am currently logged into, to another user who is also logged in, I get a black screen.
To elaborate, here is the exact sequence of events:

- I select user B and enter my password

I did try to change my session (at the login screen) to gnome-failsafe, xterm, even kde, but still I get the black screen.
I'm installing 10.10 on a desktop with Nvidia 6150 that needs nomodeset on boot or i get the blank screen upon boot. I had to force the live CD to nomodeset when booting from the CD. I was finally able to install, but upon the first boot from the hard drive I'm getting the blank screen again. How do I boot with nomodeset and get to my installed ubuntu. Once I get there i can edit my grub settings.

The initial bios stuff is still there and the GRUB loader text. Then darkness without There is one way to start up and getting screen (which I'm using now). If hitting ESC in grub loader, selecting recovery-mode, selecting re-configure monitor, selecting start up in graphics-safe mode (this session only) it'll work. I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.
I upgraded my machine to F15. I was asked to reboot. From that point on, the system will not boot. I get to the blue screen with the 'egg', about 1/3 of the 'egg' turns white, then the screen goes black. No cursor, nothing.
I hit shift to get the Grub menu, tried booting my old kernel. Same result.
I tried burning a F15 live cd and booting that, but I get a desktop background with no mouse, no docks. It doesn't seem to respond to anything I do. I can boot it in the "basic graphics" mode, or whatever you call it, but I would rather not overwrite my entire hard drive with a fresh install.
I have seen references to some kind of recovery mode provided on the live cd that might repair my install without wiping my data, but I can't find it anywhere.
My hardware:
Dual core Atom D525
Intel NM10 chipset
I am getting a black screen on the latest kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20. My computer completely boots up, but goes black after a minute or two. For now, I am booting up with the previous kernel.
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.24-26-generic to 2.6.24-27-generic (I'm still using Hardy Heron). After upgrade I uninstalled the previous Nvidia driver installation:

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.
But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...
Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?
If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?
Recovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.

- the system boots,
- the grub menu appears,
- the splash screen comes up and then
- I have a black screen and that's it!
I saw, at the end of the installation process, that the driver for the nVidia video card was removed.
Got a black screen after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. My Computer is an Acer eMachines E527 [URL]
I) Just started Computer normally, using new Kernel and 11.04 then the screen became black as before. Waited until Harddisk (Light) wouldn't work too much and boot seemed to be over.
II) IN BLIND FLIGHT (without seeing anything, since screen is black):
1) opened the Terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2
2) typed my "Username" (enter)
3) typed my "Password" (enter)
4) typed "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" (enter)
5) typed my "Password" (enter)
III) Now it is not really satisfactory to do this over and over again each time restarting my computer. Is there any way to use a batch or use the grub to setpci ? I'd like to install 11.04 with an USB Stick on a similar computer - how do I setpci there?
After upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, no wireless networks are found on my computer�an acer travelmate 5510. On Karmic, wifi worked flawlessly "out of the box"�no windows drivers or anything needed. I have checked under Administration/hardware drivers; it tells me "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system." Cabled internet access through my wifi router works fine. How to get wifi up and running under Lucid. Despite having used Karmic for a while, I am relatively new to the inner workings of Ubuntu / linux systems, and really don't know where to go from here.

i recently installed 10.04 after hearing from a colleague that it was highly recommended, however after install, all i get is a black screen with various colors pixels at the tope of the screen. I've been trying to find a resolution, but have nevertheless come up empty, i really need to info that is/was on my desktop (passwords & such).
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy ubuntu desktop died yesterday. I rebooted my computer in like 1 month and after grub, the screen is all black and it stays there... forever. So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?

(ranting stopped, for now) I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 GPU in my Dell Zino system and finished the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS and got the purple screen of death. tried the intel recommended fixes but got nothing. I cant even get into recovery mode.
View 3 Replies View Relatedusing update manager, i allowed my karmic desktop at work to begin the upgrade process to lucid on friday afternoon... i ran out of time, and headed home for the weekend. somewhere along the process, the screen locked. after arriving back at work this morning, i cannot unlock the screen, or even switch users. other threads in this forum seem to indicate that i should've aborted the upgrade, but... i didn't know enough to anticipate problems, and i guess i assumed that given the lengthy estimate to complete the upgrade, i could just pickup the process again on monday.
in any case, cycling the power didn't help, so i downloaded the iso, and have booted to the 10.04 'trial'. i was hoping somebody could help guide me through resetting a password on the on-disk os from the live cd... i'm ok with reinstalling if i can preserve my account's configs & prefs.
I did a clean upgrade to lucid 10.04 from Karmic 9.10. After the installation, the boot was stuck at the purple screen with red and white dots.I did this on Dell XPS M1530 laptop and there was no problem in Karmic.
1. I found a temporary solution. After being stuck here, I simply go to tty1, login and startx. Now, I could work normally but if I go to tty1 and then to 'Ctrl-Alt-F7', I could still see the purple boot screen whereas 'Ctrl-Alt-F8' brings me to the normal GUI. How do I get rid of this purple boot screen ?

I get a black screen (with tiny bits of white on opposite corners of the screen) every time after logging into Kubuntu Lucid AMD64. The only thing I can do is move my mouse pointer over that black screen which doesn't go away. I booted into recovery mode and with command prompt typed "startx" to start graphical mode. That resulted in the same black screen. Then I decided to reboot and install Fluxbox via the command prompt under recovery mode. Now, I'm able to view graphically under Fluxbox after selecting it over the default KDE and logging in. But how do I get regular KDE/Kubuntu to work again? I don't know what happened to make it stop working!

Everything is great and all but today when I booted into Ubuntu everything was going well--the splash screen appeared and the dots were doing their thing and all--but then there was just a blank screen. Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday, 9/1/2010, I received a bunch of patch updates for 10.04 (64-bit) and applied them to my laptop (Dell Latitude E6510, Intel Core i5). After they applied, it asked me if I wanted to reboot now or later. I chose later to finish my work and then shut my laptop off. This morning, I turned it on, only to get a black screen during bootup and also during login. I know it's working behind the scenes because I can hear the drum sound when it's ready to login and I can still press the power button and hit enter to shut it down. I tried using Alt+F2->F12 but it would only show a black screen.
My temporary workaround was to hold the shift button during startup to get the grub menu and then select the older 2.6.32-23 kernel to bootup instead of the newer 2.6.32-24. I am able to boot ok in the older kernel and it's working fine, but I don't know what is causing the problem for the newer one and cannot boot into that one.
I believe I was running 2.6.32-24 fine up until I received a bundle of patches to apply to my system. So the question is, is there a way to figure out what patches were applied in yesterday's bundle so I can back them out? If not, how can I fix this so I can run the newer updated kernel?

I have a Logitech Quickcam Chat webcam (USB ID 046d:092c) that's worked with my Ubuntu with minimal problems (just some nVidia driver crap) for ages now. I'm not using nVidia anymore (Intel now), but since my fresh install of Lucid, my webcam doesn't seem to capture anything. It is detected by lsusb, but when I open Cheese, the picture is just black. Skype doesn't give me any video at all, not even that annoying static or green lines. Clicking the Test button in my Skype Options undedoesn't do anything;double-clicking it gives me a full-screen grey screen - pressing Escape takes me back to the preferences window. After I get the grey full screen and press Escape, the Test button is gone until I close the Options window and open it up again.Going into gstreamer-properties and testing v4l2 (under Video -> Default Input) just shows me the 'Testing ... Click Ok to finish' window for ages until I close it - no video appears or anything and I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be seeing. Testing with the 'Test Input' option does give me the coloured lines and static. Testing v4l seems to make it crash, but no error comes up in the terminal I'm running it from.lsusb output:

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...
Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.
I'm under Kubuntu 10.04 and I upgraded kde from 4.4 to 4.5. via apt-get. After KDM login, I got a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and active.
I tried this :
