Ubuntu :: Can't Get Past Login Screen In 10.04 Lucid Lynx
Jun 11, 2010I installed Ubuntu for the first time yesterday by running Wubi on Windows Vista Home Premium. For all of yesterday and up to lunchtime today Ubuntu was working fine. I followed the instructions on a forum post to remove Evolution Mail via the synaptic applications menu. I proceeded to log out of Ubuntu and reboot (I hoestly can't remember what for) Anyway, ever since I have not been able to log in to Ubuntu. I enter my username and password as normal and they are accepted, however moments the log in page displays again. This continues in an endless loop. The password is definitely correct because I get an authentication error if I enter anything else. I know I am not the only person experiencing this issue.

Jul 30, 2010I installed Lucid Lynx on a medium-old system, Athlon 2200+ with an ATI video card. No problems during the install itself. The problem is that when I boot into the login screen, I get a bunch of blank boxes. If I move the mouse around, I can see various areas highlighted, but I can't actually see the menu options. I can type in my username and password to log in (not being able to see what I'm typing), but then the desktop panels are empty boxes - once again I can mouse over them to get empty drop down menus, but I can't see anything else.
I've had enough experience with Ubuntu in the past to do some troubleshooting myself. Usually I would just boot into a terminal, switch Xorg to use the vesa driver and go from there. However, a number of decisions in Lucid Lynx have made troubleshooting practically impossible.1 - No grub menu. No way for me to pick a safe boot option.2 - Install CD doesn't come with any rescue boot options.3 - Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X server and Ctrl-Alt-F1 to boot into a shell don't work.4 - the default filesystem is ext4, which means my old rescue CDs aren't likely to be of much help.Sigh. I understand that Ubuntu is trying to make things look pretty and all, but these user-friendly changes are making it near impossible to fix a problem like the one I have. I just downloaded a System Rescue Linux CD but it's kind of late to be trying it out now.

Jun 14, 2010I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. Burned the .iso image, booted, and when I got the blank screen I suspected the Intel D101GGC motherboard using the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset had problemsI tried adding boot options (F6) such as vga=711 and xforcevesa and text. No joyOthers seemed to have gotten a successful install so I turned may attention to the CD, suspecting it was a bad download/burn, and downloaded 10.04 desktop again from mirror.pnl.gov/releases/. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.

Feb 21, 2010On a Karmic desktop with a Radeon 2600 hd video card, my screen goes black for a couple of seconds when opening an avi (divx or mjpeg).The video starts playing immediatly but I only see a black screen. Using Movie Player, its a black screen window, using vlc or gmplayer or mplayer ,the all screen goes black. It does not happen if I use the ati open source driver (but then flash full screen crashes...). I just installed the latest ati catalyst (10.2) and the problem remains.....

May 4, 2010I get a black screen (with tiny bits of white on opposite corners of the screen) every time after logging into Kubuntu Lucid AMD64. The only thing I can do is move my mouse pointer over that black screen which doesn't go away. I booted into recovery mode and with command prompt typed "startx" to start graphical mode. That resulted in the same black screen. Then I decided to reboot and install Fluxbox via the command prompt under recovery mode. Now, I'm able to view graphically under Fluxbox after selecting it over the default KDE and logging in. But how do I get regular KDE/Kubuntu to work again? I don't know what happened to make it stop working!

Everything is great and all but today when I booted into Ubuntu everything was going well--the splash screen appeared and the dots were doing their thing and all--but then there was just a blank screen. Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.

Sep 2, 2010Yesterday, 9/1/2010, I received a bunch of patch updates for 10.04 (64-bit) and applied them to my laptop (Dell Latitude E6510, Intel Core i5). After they applied, it asked me if I wanted to reboot now or later. I chose later to finish my work and then shut my laptop off. This morning, I turned it on, only to get a black screen during bootup and also during login. I know it's working behind the scenes because I can hear the drum sound when it's ready to login and I can still press the power button and hit enter to shut it down. I tried using Alt+F2->F12 but it would only show a black screen.
My temporary workaround was to hold the shift button during startup to get the grub menu and then select the older 2.6.32-23 kernel to bootup instead of the newer 2.6.32-24. I am able to boot ok in the older kernel and it's working fine, but I don't know what is causing the problem for the newer one and cannot boot into that one.
I believe I was running 2.6.32-24 fine up until I received a bundle of patches to apply to my system. So the question is, is there a way to figure out what patches were applied in yesterday's bundle so I can back them out? If not, how can I fix this so I can run the newer updated kernel?

May 3, 2010I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4. I am having the following problem:
When I attempt to switch from the user that I am currently logged into, to another user who is also logged in, I get a black screen.
To elaborate, here is the exact sequence of events:

- I get the login screen
- I select user B and enter my password

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Webcam Shows Just Black Screen In Lucid/
Jun 11, 2010I have a Logitech Quickcam Chat webcam (USB ID 046d:092c) that's worked with my Ubuntu with minimal problems (just some nVidia driver crap) for ages now. I'm not using nVidia anymore (Intel now), but since my fresh install of Lucid, my webcam doesn't seem to capture anything. It is detected by lsusb, but when I open Cheese, the picture is just black. Skype doesn't give me any video at all, not even that annoying static or green lines. Clicking the Test button in my Skype Options undedoesn't do anything;double-clicking it gives me a full-screen grey screen - pressing Escape takes me back to the preferences window. After I get the grey full screen and press Escape, the Test button is gone until I close the Options window and open it up again.Going into gstreamer-properties and testing v4l2 (under Video -> Default Input) just shows me the 'Testing ... Click Ok to finish' window for ages until I close it - no video appears or anything and I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be seeing. Testing with the 'Test Input' option does give me the coloured lines and static. Testing v4l seems to make it crash, but no error comes up in the terminal I'm running it from.lsusb output:

Jan 22, 2011I can insert a " burned " CD and it boots and plays right away , but if I insert a purchased music CD or other Purchased media it just scans and does nothing . I've gone to "places " and opened the CD drive and get the message " no media found "or Insert media .Also in the properties tab of the CD drive type is "unknown " and permissions can't be determined .

Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.
General :: Installing Lucid Lynx Using Live Cd On Compaq Presario SR5010NX ?
May 7, 2010I have been trying to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx using Live CD on this machine, a compaq Presario SR5010NX, with Celeron D 3.46Ghz CPU. Bios Version American Megatrends, Inc. 5.18, 2007; 2 gigs of RAM with approx. 140 gigs of hard disk space total useable. Has Realtek High Definition audio, graphic chipset Intel 82945G family; Soft data fax modem with smart CP (internal modem). It is connected to my DSL modem/router, Netgear DGN2000, with ethernet cable (as are my other two computers).
I start the installation. Finally the desktop shows up. As soon as I start trying to navigate, my mouse freezes and that's as far as I can go.
Just out of curiosity, I also tried to use my Mint 8 CD. It did the same thing. Gets the desktop up, then freezes. I am so frustrated because I really want Ubuntu on this machine. I planned on wiping out Vista Home Basic and giving the whole thing to Ubuntu.

May 5, 2010I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.

VLC works fine. how to either remove Movie Player and Dragon Player or make them work. I tried apt-get remove mplayer but that doesn't work. If not that, I wonder if the default media player can be changed to VLC, e.g., when you click any video it will start to play using VLC?

Ubuntu Installation :: Bluetooth Under Lucid Lynx?
Apr 30, 2010I have tried out Lucid Lynx Beta 1 back in march. During the installation I was announced that support for bluetooth was dropped. I installed anyway, thinking it would be back in the Final Release. Meanwhile (between March and April) I reinstalled Karmic because I really needed the bluetooth. I can see in the upgrade that bluetooth still isn't available. What should I do about this? Is there a way to keep Lucid Lynx and bluetooth? Or will I have to stay on Karmic until the end of times?

A PS/2 keyboard works great on Ubuntu except the one I have is broken, hence why I'm using this USB keyboard. Any ideas on how to fix this?
