View 1 RepliesI am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB drive but every time I reach the option for changing the keyboard layout and press forward, it seems to get stuck. That is, the mouse icon shows that it is loading but nothing ever happening. I even went for a shower, came back and nothing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy smallest disc has the Vista loader and nothing else but I cannot select it for Dual Booting in the Ubuntu installation set up only for use as an entire disc which would delete the Vista Loader.
This is what I have:-
1st disc - no operating system much data
2nd Disc - empty except for Windows loader
3rd Disc - no operating system much stuff.
My original plan was to give Ubuntu all of the smaller second disc and I deleted everything ready to give it the entire hard disc. It was only when I went to install Ubuntu it I found the Vista loader lurking on disc 2 and the only option the install Ubuntu set up gave me for disc 2 was to use the entire disc (wiping out Vista loader) otherwise I could have installed Ubunbtu on another disc - which it reported as having no operating system.
If I put Ubuntu on disc 1 would I have a dual boot arrangement given that the installer saw no operating system on that disc ? Is there any (simple) way I can install Ubuntu on disc 2 and not loose the Vista loader? I am installing this version of Ubuntu as it was on the DVD that came with book "Beginning Ubntu Linux" It took me long time to Psych myself up to install it and when I did . . .
I started installing fedora 15 from CD on a dell Vista Laptop (2hz 1g ram) but after the logo finished turning white it stays on the blue screen with the bird.I have been trying fedora 13 and xubuntu on this cheap old con of a laptop from pc world and things run smooth (E-system 1.7hz 512RAM vista

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10 and when I try to boot into ubuntu now it goes to a screen where it says "waiting for /windows" and even after the loading bar is fully loaded it stuck on that screen. BTW I don't know if this will help but when I restarted it wouldn't work because grub was broken and I booted it 9.10 live CD and reinstalled it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI ran the installation - shrunk my xp partition during installation and during the progress, it just hangs at 79%. I looked it up on google quickly and it seems like other people get the same problem. But I wanna make sure my hardrive won't get messed up because of the new partition.I also have an old ubuntu cd (8.04) so can I restart my laptop, run the 8.04 installation, and then update to 10.04 from there?I just wanna make sure my partitions aren't messed up if I manually turn off my laptop while it's installing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently got a virus on my Windows XP that keeps me from booting up. I'd had a passing interest in Linux (Ubuntu specifically) and finally took the plunge. I downloaded 10.10 last night and created a LiveCD. After about 30 minutes using it, I've decided that I love it.My problem is installing it. I'm trying to install it on an old IBM machine, on my E: drive (the only one with a free partition, so I don't have to delete any of my files) and I am stuck on installation. Nothing froze, the installer is still sitting there, as I write this. I'm on the last page; filling out login information, and for whatever reason, the 'Forward' button is greyed out. The status above the loading bar says 'Ready when you are' and has been for about, 20 minutes.

Not only that.. Linux has better support for developers.So.. I was Windows user till yesterday. I finally decided to work on Installing Linux or more specifically - Debian.I love everything part of the GNU - GIMP, GTK+, Gedit, GCC...
Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup. It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.
However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.
Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder? There I got lost completely.
I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu, but before I do that I'd like to know if installing it removes your copy of Windows. If it does, is there any way I can work around that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I bought my computer from a friend, he told me that it had 60Gbs in it. Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

how do I remove Ubuntu and then install windows xp.I also want to divide my drive into C and D if possible .
When I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.

I have a HP laptop that I have had Windows Vista on for about two years. I am soon going to switch it over to Ubuntu. My question is can you safely use the Ubuntu installation process to delete the Windows partition along with all the programs and files it stores on the hard drive or should you first uninstall Windows manually and then, with a essentially blank computer, install Ubuntu?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've finally had enough of Windows and have decided to go with Ubuntu. However I hope someone can help me with this query... I currently have a single hard drive which I have partitioned under Windows into two. The old C:drive holds software & the windows O/S and the D: drive is where I stored photos, documents, etc. Can you tell me if it is possible to install Ubuntu into the old C: partition and leave the d: partition in tact (for a few weeks to ensure I have backups of everything on here). Alternatively, if I add a new drive and install Ubuntu onto there, will I still be able to access the old D: partition (or would I need some kind of dual boot config)?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue getting a triple-boot machine to work. I'm trying to triple-boot Mac OS X Snow Leopard (iAtkos S3) 32-bit, Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I install Mac with no issues it boots up and works. In Mac setup I make 4 partitions: Mac, Linux, Linux Swap, and Windows. After Mac is installed, I install Windows. Then Ubuntu. I select to have GRUB installed on the Linux partition. Now when I boot the PC I get a choice of Ubuntu, Windows, memtest, and Mac. Both Ubuntu and Mac work, but when I select Windows, I just get a black screen with a flashing cursor. Files are still intact and nothing has been deleted. I tried booting from the Windows CD, and running bootrec.exe /fixmbr, but all that gives me is no boot device available. I've tried every combination of installing and configuring but can't seem to get it to work. Everything is backed up so I don't mind reformatting and starting fresh if I need to. Also the Windows disk does see Windows 7 when I run scanOS. I can't use the repair option on the Windows disk as it gives me an error saying the CD is not compatible.
