Installation :: When Installing Puppy - Get Stuck After Searching For Puppy Files
Jun 21, 2009
I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

Just put an old desktop to work by installing Puppy on it. I have another HDD that I think didn't work very good, so I'm gonna plug it in and test, but I don't know what to use to stress it.

I have Ubuntu 9.10, PuppyLinux431 and Windows XP on a Toshiba laptop. I like Ubuntu, but the speed of PuppyLinux is addictive, so that was my default boot until I upgraded Ubuntu which included an upgrade to Grub2.
My problem: Grub2 doesn't recognise PuppyLinux. Using information from [url] I have made an executable file named 07_Puppy in /etc/grub.d and did update-grub from root. Still no luck. I can boot PuppyLinux from the grub command line using the following commands:
Just before grub displays the boot menu, I think I see a very brief message about a syntax error, but it's gone before I can read it.
Here is the contents of my grub.cfg:
Quote:
Why Grub2 doesn't see Puppy and let me boot it from the menu?

I've recently installed Puppy Linux on a "second-hand" machine, and I'm trying to get gcc installed so that I can (hopefully) compile some wireless drivers for the USB adapter I'm trying to make work.
I've tried everything I can think of, including following the instructions on the Puppy website. When I click the devx_430.sfs file, it simply fails to mount ("Failed mounting or unmounting."). So I tried getting the gcc and make packages (+dependencies) from the Ubuntu repos, and install those (Puppy has an "undeb" utility). There are actually supposedly two ways of doing that: one is to click on the file in ROX-Filer, and that opens a confirmation dialog to install, so I tried that first (with all the .debs). That seemed to report a successful installation for each package (confirmation dialogs popped up to report installation success), but when I tried typing "gcc" in the terminal, it still couldn't find it ("bash: gcc: command not found").
So then I tried the second way: using "undeb" in the terminal. That again was supposedly successful (no errors), but still "bash: gcc: command not found" and "/usr/bin/gcc: No such file or directory".
So then I tried "file /usr/bin/gcc" and it gives this:
Code:
/usr/bin/gcc: broken symbolic link to 'gcc-4.3'
And of course, as expected, "find / -name "gcc-4.3" finds nothing.
Where are these files being extracted to, if at all? And I can't just use the package manager, because I don't have internet (this is how I'm trying to get internet). Am I totally screwed?

I downloaded the puppy linux iso. I don't want to write that iso to any disk (because most of the linux disks are used just once and then the just acquire space in my cd bag). I tried to create its bootable pen drive by start-up disk creator. But start-up disk creator is not accepting the iso file for puppy. Can anyone please tell me how to make a bootable pen-drive of puppy linux

I wonder if anyone can help, I have tried googling this many times and still have had no success.I have an old Dell Latitude LM P133 with a 1626 Mb hard drive and 40Mb RAM. This model has a swappable 3.5" floppy or CD-rom but will only boot from HDD or Floppy, USB is not supported. I have been playing with Puppy on my main computer as a CD boot and would like to install Puppy on the DELL, I understand that this would be a suitable system.I can remove the hard drive and connect it to a pc running xp via USB cable (This pc also has UBUNTU on it (dual boot and fairly recent install of which I have very little experience!)So far I have I have copied the ISO file to the hard drive (FAT 32 format) but it won't boot directly, I have tried installing GRUB but to be honest am not really sure what I am doing. I have also tried the wakepuppy floppy and copied the IDEHD file to the hard drive but still no luck, I am getting 'pnpbios fault' messages.

I have disks of Lucid Puppy 5.11 and MacPup 5.11. Both disks run very well on my laptop, an old 2001 model Sony Vaio which is already booting Ubuntu 10.04 UNE.
But neither finishes loading on my HP Pavilion a1020n desktop, which is running Windoze XP Home. They both bog down on looking for optical drives... interesting as I am loading them from CD and it reads the optical drives fine up to that point.
It's sad that a quick-loading portable Linux won't load at all on my newer, faster machine.
Maybe it's because the laptop has GRUB already? My HP chokes every time I try to modify the boot sector, lots of "wonderful" security features to keep Windoze from "getting corrupted".

I'm fairly new to linux, I can't get puppy to connect to ANY wireless network, protected or not. The driver autodetected my wireless card (IBM high rate wireless LAN with modem II) as an Intersil Prism 2.5 chipset, but it will not work. I wonder if the driver is corrupted, or if I should just use ndiswrapper with the windows drivers. Obviously, I would prefer to use native linux drivers, but the wrapper will not tax the system too much if I use that option. I have heard that these laptops are very linux friendly, and I ran xubuntu on it for quite some time with no big problems. My home router is a Belkin F6D4230-4 V3. This thing will not show up at all, but my family's old linksys will, I can't connect to it either.

I am comparing distros of Linux on a computer with VERY low specs. I have a CLI only version of Ubuntu 9.10 running A-OK, but when I run lwm or just X the video flickers (which I believe is due not to the video card/driver but to the resources used). I have tried this with two video cards with the same result.
When I run puppy it flies with no setup.
I know that Puppy is designed for older systems (2.4 Kernel and all that), but is there any other reason why Ubuntu would be slow in comparison.
I am using the nv driver with a Riva TNT PCI Video card.

I know there are many threads about dual boot linux windows. I did a search but couldn't find for this specific question. I'm planning to use Puppy Linux as my main OS on my P4 machine. I asked a friend of mine who knows Linux very well. I asked should I install Puppy alone on my P4 machine? He told me that I should dual boot with XP because sometimes Linux alone does not compatible with graphic card, sound card, Ethernet adapter, etc. If dual boot Linux with Windows. They both can share the same drivers. Is it true?

I'm pretty new to Linux's. I've been slowly learning, and I really enjoy these. I have a speech in class to persuade the class about anything of my choice. I chose to try and convince them that Linux is a much better operating system than either Mac or Windows. I got a lot of data and had a thought that if i were to get an old computer to run very fast it would definitely turn some heads. So I loaded Puppy Linux on it and I want to find a way to make it look like Windows 7 and give the power point on it, then to pull back the podium and show them that I did all of it on a HP6633C computer made for Windows 98. I thought that it would definitely bring my point across. Any advice on how to get the effect I'm looking for?

I have a question that is really probably a lilo question, but here goes. Can you use lilo to boot different linuxes on separate hard drives. Like this.
/dev/hda1 - Slackware 13 with lilo in MBR
/dev/hdb1 - Puppy linux
Here is my lilo image area:
[Code]...
Boots Slackware ok, but when booting puppy it screws up and seems to be printing the boot messages for the Slackware kernel on hda1. Now, how do I tell lilo to find the puppy kernel?

Ok, this is not a matter of life or death for me. I am just an experimental geek. I had a three partition HD originally, one blank, one with my home directory and one empty one. Then, I used unetbootin and put puppy on my empty partition. Now, puppy works, but I wantt a way to switch. I can reinstall, I just want a way of having several linux OS's on a hard drive.

The computer has two.
