My smallest disc has the Vista loader and nothing else but I cannot select it for Dual Booting in the Ubuntu installation set up only for use as an entire disc which would delete the Vista Loader.
This is what I have:-
1st disc - no operating system much data
2nd Disc - empty except for Windows loader
3rd Disc - no operating system much stuff.
My original plan was to give Ubuntu all of the smaller second disc and I deleted everything ready to give it the entire hard disc. It was only when I went to install Ubuntu it I found the Vista loader lurking on disc 2 and the only option the install Ubuntu set up gave me for disc 2 was to use the entire disc (wiping out Vista loader) otherwise I could have installed Ubunbtu on another disc - which it reported as having no operating system.
If I put Ubuntu on disc 1 would I have a dual boot arrangement given that the installer saw no operating system on that disc ? Is there any (simple) way I can install Ubuntu on disc 2 and not loose the Vista loader? I am installing this version of Ubuntu as it was on the DVD that came with book "Beginning Ubntu Linux" It took me long time to Psych myself up to install it and when I did . . .

I just installed ubuntu on my m11x and am completely new to ubuntu. After installing the latest driver for the 335m I am stuck at checking battery state and there is no way I can get to the gui anymore. The only access I have to are the tty's and I don't know what to do. I have already tried finding a solution for a couple of hours, but cannot find any. Please help me solve this problem, I do not want to reinstall again.

I'm trying to install supercollider following this guide: [url]
And I'm completely stuck on installing Planet CCRMA at Home. The guide says update your computer with PackageKit, KPackageKit. I believe I have both installed but cannot see them in the applications menu. Where can check?
Next the guide says: Run the following command in a terminal window: su -c 'rpm -Uvh

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

I ran the installation - shrunk my xp partition during installation and during the progress, it just hangs at 79%. I looked it up on google quickly and it seems like other people get the same problem. But I wanna make sure my hardrive won't get messed up because of the new partition.I also have an old ubuntu cd (8.04) so can I restart my laptop, run the 8.04 installation, and then update to 10.04 from there?I just wanna make sure my partitions aren't messed up if I manually turn off my laptop while it's installing.

I recently got a virus on my Windows XP that keeps me from booting up. I'd had a passing interest in Linux (Ubuntu specifically) and finally took the plunge. I downloaded 10.10 last night and created a LiveCD. After about 30 minutes using it, I've decided that I love it.My problem is installing it. I'm trying to install it on an old IBM machine, on my E: drive (the only one with a free partition, so I don't have to delete any of my files) and I am stuck on installation. Nothing froze, the installer is still sitting there, as I write this. I'm on the last page; filling out login information, and for whatever reason, the 'Forward' button is greyed out. The status above the loading bar says 'Ready when you are' and has been for about, 20 minutes.

To give a bit of background, I started using Fedora at Fedora Core 2. I've installed and upgraded Fedora several times in the last few years. However, I'm not a Linux master, and there are many things I don't know how to do. When I need help, I can usually find an answer, but not this time.
I've just wiped clean my hard drive (after backing up to a separate drive), repartitioned it, and have installed F11. There were a few glitches along the way regarding the repartitioning, but they got worked out.Oh, before the install, I also added a new 1TB SATA hard drive to the system. Now that the initial install is done, I'm trying to boot up and complete the process, but the system hangs after checking filesystems. Yes, it already checked and passed the new 1TB drive.I've left the machine at this step for an hour and it has not yet loaded the firstboot screen to complete the install process.

I bought a new issue of Linux Format magazine and saw it had a bootable disk with Fedora installer/live DVD on it which I was eager to try out "The worlds most advanced Linux distro" I put the DVD in my computer and rebooted it. I selected 'install or upgrade'. It started to load (blasting white text at me). I skipped the media test but then the screen was black and reacted to no mouse moving or keyboard pressing. Not even the OFF button, so I pressed RESET and selected 'install with basic video driver' this time it worked. It didn't fill my whole screen like many 'basic video drivers' but they don't cut off much so I was willing to forgive Fedora using one it was proberly only for the install anyway I could download a new one after. I have a Radeon HD 4200 (extreamly crap) intergrated into the north bridge. I can't afford an expensive graphics card. I build it myself so I can tell you what parts it's got if needed. Anyway I progressed through the setup without problems until I got to the partitionor which defaulted to 'Replace existing Linux system' this would delete Ubuntu an maybe Windows 7. I changed it to custom layout or something like that. It started a partitioner and I remembered I wanted to give ubuntu 30GB more room so I resized it. I created a new 50 GB logical partition and select it as the '/' partition, plenty more space for future Linux distributions. Here's the real problem. Soon after I hit install it said some repositorys require a network connection. It had only one option 'eth0' my motherboard has built in Ethernet but I connect to the net with a wifi card I do not have a cable long enough to reach this computer on the other side of the room. So how was I suppost to continue the setup? I pressed okay hoping it would give up and let me continue the setup but it didn't it said they was an error connecting to the Internet therefore setup could not continue. With only one option: 'Exit Installer'. GRRRR. Interestingly enough after I clicked it the disk drive's light kept flashing but the screen went black forcing me to reboot. Can anyone help me so I can install "The worlds most advanced Linux distribution"*

I am pretty new to Linux OS's, but I have gone through the process of installing linux onto several of my system already. The problem I am having is when I attempt to install Fedora 14 onto my Unbuntu 10.10 (erasing Unbuntu to be specific) I am stuck at the Post-Installation process.
I am using a CD-RW to install Fedora onto my Ubuntu, and I installed Ubuntu onto the computer originally with another CD-R.
I assume this usually takes a few minutes, as the pop-up says that it may take several, but it has been several hours with no progress. I was pretty far into the installation when the pop up appeared, and it said:
"Post-Installation: Performing post-installation filesystem changes. This may take several minutes.".
As I said, it has been several hours.

I completed my dvd-burn for Fedora 10. I booted up from the dvd, and the automatic 10 second installation text shows up. The setup loads the images, and proceeds to a loading bar. After the loading bar I saw an underscore. That all I see.. I wait a couple of minutes and I still only see an underscore. This is my first time trying to install a Unix type O.S. Are there any commands I need to run for the installation to move forward? Or is there some type of corruption in the installation?

Im using Linux Mint Helena and just got myself a new HP Deskjet D1663 printer. However, I followed the instructions on [url] but am getting stuck at Step 5A.
When I put the command.
Quote:
make
It gives the error
Quote:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
I'm also surprised that the [url] website had no option for Linux Mint 8 (Helena) and thus i had to follow instructions and do installations as per Linux Mint 5 or 6. I hope the Step 2 (Install Dependency Packages) has not adversely affected my Linux 8.

i'm doing a fresh network install of f15 from a usb stick. the installation has now been stuck on the "retrieving installation information for fedora 15 - i386" stage for over an hour. on previous releases this stage has only taken a few mins. i can see from my router that there have been thousands of packets sent and received from the laptop. i've searched all the normal places but can't find anyone else reporting this. does anyone know if this is a known bug (and if there is a fix) or if this stage takes significantly longer in f15 to any previous release ? cheers.
---------- Post added at 07:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:12 PM ----------
finally got to the next stage after nearly two hours. no idea why it took so long.

After untarring the file and executing the binary for firefox, the following error is coming "brilliant:/firefox # ./firefox ./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". The libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 is there in /usr/lib.. I guess this is because the SuSE is 64 bit and the software Im trying to install is 32 bit.

After searching online and in these forums I found two different ways of installing the Nvidia drivers in fedora 12. If you haven't yet installed the the repos then:
Code:
su
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
First way:
as su
(1)
yum --enablerepo=rp*g install kmod-nvidia.$(uname -m) xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64
[Code]...
I used the first way and everything seems to work fine. Compiz-fusion works good but i did have to add vga=795 to /boot/grub/grub.conf to get the graphical boot loader to work again. Should I have used the second method? What is the difference in these two ways? Most notably the second steps. Is one way better or preferred over the other? From my understanding you must do this because of the nouveau driver.

when i tried to boot the system today, i got something like a dos screen with all kind of running commands, about USB input or something like that. i took screen shots with my N85 celphone, but i can't place them here since it's shown as black screen when i try to open them!
anyway, since it was a fresh install, i thought i should just save myself the trouble and reinstall ubuntu all over again. I'm doing it using a USB flash drive, like last time. i boot the system, choose "install ubuntu.....", then english language, after it the screen that check if I'm connected, plugged to power, and have enough space....in this window i click forward, mouse courser becomes like a circling thing and it keep going like this for hours! nothing is happening!i tried the option to use ubuntu without installation, and it's working, but same error as before happens if i try to install again! how can i solve this issue? like i said, everything worked great until this afternoon, and i made no changes at all
