Ubuntu Installation :: Installing & Keeping Windows Data?

I've finally had enough of Windows and have decided to go with Ubuntu. However I hope someone can help me with this query... I currently have a single hard drive which I have partitioned under Windows into two. The old C:drive holds software & the windows O/S and the D: drive is where I stored photos, documents, etc. Can you tell me if it is possible to install Ubuntu into the old C: partition and leave the d: partition in tact (for a few weeks to ensure I have backups of everything on here). Alternatively, if I add a new drive and install Ubuntu onto there, will I still be able to access the old D: partition (or would I need some kind of dual boot config)?

I had 10.04 in my netbok but something happened, packages failed to install, all sorts of errors when shutting it down, kernel panic when switching on again so I've decided to just install it again. I've got 10.10 running from a LiveUSB drive right now and I'm going through the installer. I want to just tell it to use the exsting partitions, dont bother formatting, just install the new OS on top of the old one so I can keep the user documents etc How do I do this? I picked advanced partition management in the installer, pressed Change on sda1 and gave it a mount point of / but now the "format partition" is ticked and greyed out.. i dont want to format this partition, I just want to install to it

I have a 200GB partition where I keep my music, movies, photography, /home backups, and other really important things to make changing linux distros easier. I'm planning on installing 10.04 when it comes out and figure ill do a clean install. I need to install Windows XP for business purposes, and was wondering if I create an NTFS partition in gparted beforehand, will windows simply install to that partition and leave my 200GB data partition alone? (10.04 will be installed afterwards, but i know how not to overwrite when installing that.)

I have a 32g usb stick and I am trying to install Ubuntu on it. But I want to keep 16g as storage space so that I can have it as a normal USB storage for daily use. It's my understanding that I need to create 2 partition ( Since I want to use ext4 for the system which windows doesn't recognize?). But when I created two logical partition and installed ubuntu onto the second partition <sdc6>, I can't seem to boot into there,the screen stays on the white cursor blinking mode, and the usb isn't being read. Is there any way that I could do this? I just want half used as storage and half as Ubuntu system.

I'm currently running ubuntu on my netbook, and vista on my desktop. Earlier i had an ubuntu installation alongside my vista, this has resaulted in my desktop making a countdown at booting. After the countdown it boots up vista. So i'm aware that there still are som leftovers from my earlier umuntu adventures.... here is my objective: I want to keep my vista installation intact, BUT i need to clear all earlier grub and ubuntu installations...and finally I want to install a fresh ubuntu 10.04.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips about this.I have very little fedora experiee and wanna start playing with it now.I'v bin using it for some short time a long ago but nothing much.Now I could use some help with this:Can I and how, instal Fedora11, while having Windows7 instaleed allready and then have them both with dual boot. I guess it should be possible but some tips / guide would be great so I don't kill my windows and have to reinstal all over again, as i wanna keep windows as main OS for work but have fedora to learn as well.By the way, I have 2x640Gb in raid0, 1st partition 100gb with Windows7 on it, and the rest on another partition. Both have data on them. If that means anything for instalation

My friend just got a gaming laptop that he won't let anyone else use (his last one got infected when his girlfriend surfed on it for just one hour -- he refuses to use antivirus since he claims he knows how to keep clean, but he doesn't trust others).
Because I used Linux a bit once, I said to him what if I could promise not to make any changes to your hard drive, and I told him that I was pretty sure I could boot to a live cd and then only write files to a usb key. He's actually willing to let me try (I showed him some linux sites I was looking at, and he believes me that we can do this).
1) Is there anything I either MUST do or else must NOT do to make sure I make no changes to his laptop's hard drive? And so that any changes are only going to go on the usb drive I hook up?
2) Since he's got an i7 processor, I assume I should get a version of ubuntu that supports 64 bits, right?

I'm currently setting up a server with 2x 1TB disks in raid1. (Centos 5.5)In the future, if the storage is insufficient and I decide to upgrade the disks to 2x 2TB, could I just:
- dump ghost image of the array on usb drive
- replace hdd's and build new array
- ghost array with image created previously
Would the above work, will the new partition automatically resize to 2TB or do I need to partition right now with LVM? would it work with LVM?

I am living in Australia, I am wanting to keep the bastards (read: Australian Government) ignorant about what I use my PC for.
Its them storing any of my personal information that I am worried about, but if I can keep my history from them completely, even better...

the data usage information from the carrier is often several hours old and is accessed in some arcane ways (logging into their website, sending a specific SMS message at best). Here's my idea: single-session data usage is perfectly reported by ifconfig ppp0. The problem is, how tokeep track of previous sessions accumulate the numbers rollover to zero at specified date To be able to do this across computers means that one needs to store it on the modem/SIM card itself. (As a specially crafted SMS message, or a contact).

Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.

i have windows 7 installed on my laptop and working fine..i want to install Open Suse 11.2 along side. I tried installing by booting with DVD for Suse. But it gave me warning to delete the windows partition.I would like to keep the partition intact with windows 7 and install Suse. Any suggestions ?I can create partition on my laptop but i do not want to modify the current windows structure.

I use to have windows and opensuse 11.4 with dual booting with no issues at all I have installed ubuntu and now I want to get rid of it, but the boot and grub are from the ubutnu Is there any way to do a clean uninstall and do not loose the dual boot I had before?

Ok so I have been using Ubuntu for a few months, but considering how I am a total noob at doing alot of things on it i wanna get some background info about a few things before I start screwing with it.1) On deviantart i see alot of people will totally customized desktops using something called GTK2, questions: how to get and how to use? (a nice tutorial page might help lol i cant seem to find it on google)
2) I have a computer running vista and I have Ubuntu installed onto it using Wubi. I am keeping the Windows because I need it to run the latest version of iTunes (unless wine can run it but I havent tried yet because my media folder is larger than the 30 gigs i have for ubuntu). I also want to keep my windows folders and Ubuntu folders completely seperate, so my question: is there a way to increase the partition size of Wubi to past 30 gigs? I have tried to use wubi-add-virtual-disk, but when i used it it successfully repartitioned but than i rebooted and it said that root.disk was missing and my entire Ubuntu was gone (lame i know). I also did all the recent updates from the update manager, but that shouldnt cause that problem should it?
2) a) lol if possible i would like to entirely create a new partition on my computer and install Ubuntu from there (simplifies alot of things), but i cant seem to shrink my existing hard drive... the max i can shrink is it 1.4 gigs. Does anyone know how to increase that space? (I have a 300 gig hard drive with 230 gigs free i wanna create a new partition with 210 gigs for ubuntu leaving windows with only 20 gigs of free space). I have looked at using Gparted to redo the partitions, but it destroys windows and I dont have a Vista reboot CD and cant get one cause i live in china o.o

I have a fubar'd Windows 7 install I need to get working on another partition so I can do some development stuff. I use Ubuntu 95% of the time though and so the machine has an option at boot for what OS I want to go into. Does anyone know if I boot up with the Windows disc in and choose the repair option if it will screw up my boot options and I potentially lose my ability to boot into Ubuntu?

I just got it all set up and it has everything I need for what i do on my computer and it does alot better and smoother. So now im convinced linux KDE is where the party is at! HAaha so I want to remove windows 7 from my notebook and have openSUSE as the only OS running on it. Can anybody help me with removing windows 7 and leaving openSUSE on it? I was also hopeing that i'll be able to use the disk space with opensuse that my windows 7 is currently useing.

I'm currently running a Vista machine, but would like to switch over to Linux, Ubuntu in particular. My question is can I switch over to Ubuntu, keep my Windows partition and use VirtualBox to access the pre-existing Windows partition? Or does VirtualBox require me to create a new install for Guest operating systems?
If not, are there any other free alternatives to accomplish this?

i specifically told ubuntu to install alongside my operation system (windows) and instead it installed over windows and deleted all the other partitions... i had 200gb of data that i completely lost is there anyway to recover this data?

I had i a dual boot win. 7 and ubuntu 9.10,recently i had some problem in my windows os so i restored the c drive to factory settings since both operating systems where in c drive so when i tried to boot grub was showing problem.the information displayed was loading grub, the file does not exist rescue grub> so what should i do to restore grub so that i can boot again into windows 7 and ubuntu without loosing my data.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a desktop computer with three disks. SDA with NTFS in SDA1, where I have Windows XP, SDB where I had Ubuntu 10.04, and SDC where I have an NTFS partition. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in SDB without loosing the data in SDA and SDC. When I try to install it, when I choose specify manual partition, I only find this: Where is SDB abd SDC? What do I choose in Device for Boot Loader Installation?

I installed ubuntu 10.10 on a machine that had windows 7 x64. itts installed on a seperate HD, but now when I boot to the harddrive with windows 7 all i get is "verifying DMI pool data" how do I fix this so I can get back to windows 7 as well?

When I bought my computer from a friend, he told me that it had 60Gbs in it. Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

I've created a custom profile for the terminal, and have edited CompizConfig to make it a transparent shell, so now my background is essentially now my terminal. However, when I click "Show Desktop", it minimizes everything, including this terminal. Would I be able to edit the setting for this so it keeps the terminal up

I have installed windows xp (service pack 2) on my pc. later i formatted a partition (drive E and installed ubuntu linux 8.04. I have provided 2gb space for SWAP partition and remaining for root (/). I have done this manually. Installation was completed, and ubuntu asked me to reboot the system. I did so.
Now comes my problem.......I am getting some DHCP connection or some thing weird.......after that i am getting a message ......and with a message asking me to press any key.....the same thing is coming even after restarting the system....i am unable to see both windows and linux now!

When I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.

I've been using Ubuntu since 2009, but recently I had to reinstall Windows (and Ubuntu.)The problem is that ever since I reinstalled Windows the Ubuntu installation doesn't recognize the Windows partition. I've got a 500GB HDD, and the installation says there's 500GB of free space.Is there any way to make Ubuntu recognize the Windows partition while installing, or is the only solution reinstalling Windows?
