Ubuntu Installation :: New Install - No Drives For Install ?

Sep 7, 2010

I just purchased an HP HPE-210f (AMD Phenom II quad core). I would like to run Win7 and Ubuntu side by side. However, at step 4 of the installation (from USB drive) where the installer is trying to repartition the drive, the installer does not seem to recognize the disk... very odd. I've never had this problem before installing Ubuntu. The drive does not "show up" on the list of possibilities. There is simply nothing there!

Ubuntu Installation :: Drives Switch Sda To Sdb On Install?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm trying to install 10.10 to my home desktop that has Win xp. I have one ide hd with only windos on it and I have a sata hd partitioned logically for linux. The sata controller is a via chip on an old Abit mobo. The live cd works great but when I run the install and get to the partitioning, my sata disk becomes sda instead of sdb. From the live cd, gparted shows the sata as sdb. From live, "cat /proc/partitions" shows the sata disk as sdb. But during install gparted shows it as sda. The install will go on the correct drive, but I'm not sure where to put grub2. On another distro install, I left it at mbr, and it went to the sata mbr. Should I just install grub to the ide disk which will become my "sda" at boot? Will grub find ubuntu on the sata disk, which will become sdb?

OpenSUSE Install :: All Drives Not Recognized On Install (SATA 6)?

Jan 15, 2011

I just built a new system which has 4 SATA 3 Drives and 2 SATA 6 drives. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium which has 2 SATA 6 ports through a Marvel controller.I have Windows 7 loaded on one of those SATA 6 drives and it recognizes and boots fine. My intent was to load openSUSE 11.3 on the other SATA 6 drive all by itself and then use the SATA 3 drives as other file systems. When I go to install, the only drives that the openSUSE installer sees are the 4 SATA 4 drives, the SATA 6 drives do not appear at all. Note that when the system boots from the DVD the load of the Marvel Controller says IDE Passthrough Mode and displays those two drives. So how do I get openSUSE to see those drives so I can install and setup Grub to boot from there. I'm afraid if I install to just the SATA 3 drives, then I'll never get to Windows 7 again (should I ever need it ) without much gyrations. I've also tried booting from gparted-live and it does not see them either.

Fedora Installation :: Raid On Dell R210 - Install Driver - Sees 2 Separate Drives?

Jun 4, 2011

Fedora is having trouble identifying a raid partition, it sees them as separate drives. I got drivers from dell, but during a Fedora dvd install, it mentions nothing about a place to install extra drivers.

When it says it must "initialize" the drives, Fedora then breaks the dell bios raid. How to either install the dell drivers or make Fedora see the raid partition as one?

Ubuntu :: Install Fails To Recognize PATA Hard Drives

Aug 24, 2010

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu 9.0.4 on. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive). If I boot Ubuntu from the DVD (on USB) and open a terminal window and parse the dmesg output I see the message "pata_acpi :xxx device not available because of BAR 2 collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.

I can execute a command

Code:
sudo mount /home/user/mount and it works, but I'm wanting all my fstab lines to automount at boot as on other machines.
