OpenSUSE Install :: CD And Two Different Flash Drives (using The Dd Command
Dec 16, 2010
I downloaded the KDE openSUSE live-cd image and I burnt it on a CD and two different flash drives (using the dd command, as intended) and my computer freezes even before it boots the live cd/usb, at the bios laptop welcome screen (where you access the boot menu etc.)
I have an HP 6735b: ATI Radeon HD 3200, Broadcom wireless card. How could I fix this?

I notice that in 11.2 that USB drives are not automounted anymore. There is a notification that a device is found, but I have to actually click on the notification and choose to open it with dolphin. If I do nothing, the drive is never mounted. I remember from 10.3 that it would automount the drive and put a icon on the desktop. Is there anyway to duplicate this in 11.2?

had trouble writing to a flash drive. checked the permissions, the correct user it there, but the id is root.when logged in as root and attempt to change permissions i get Could not modify the ownership of file /media/disk-3. You have insufficient access to the file to perform the change.
now how as root can not have enough permission? i've been up and down the forums and google to no avail. poked around in the fstab and even mtab as there are two files, one a lock, that seems to come from mtab.

Through some recent update, which one I am not sure, my system no longer responds to removable media such as flash drives and insertions of DVD/CD disks. Whereas before, for instance, if I inserted a USB flash drive, the "Device Notifier" would pop up, tell me that a new device had been detected, and ask me what I wanted to do with it, now nothing. "My Computer" (sysinfo:/)does not update either. The kernel knows the device is there, since I can see it when I do "lsusb". OpenSuSE x86_64 11.2.

Has anyone used rtmpdump or flvstreamer? They compile well (there is also a package on Packman for rtmpdump, but not for the latest version) and have man pages listing a bunch of command line arguments, but I have not yet figured out how to use them in connection with browser and flash plugin.

I just built a new system which has 4 SATA 3 Drives and 2 SATA 6 drives. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium which has 2 SATA 6 ports through a Marvel controller.I have Windows 7 loaded on one of those SATA 6 drives and it recognizes and boots fine. My intent was to load openSUSE 11.3 on the other SATA 6 drive all by itself and then use the SATA 3 drives as other file systems. When I go to install, the only drives that the openSUSE installer sees are the 4 SATA 4 drives, the SATA 6 drives do not appear at all. Note that when the system boots from the DVD the load of the Marvel Controller says IDE Passthrough Mode and displays those two drives. So how do I get openSUSE to see those drives so I can install and setup Grub to boot from there. I'm afraid if I install to just the SATA 3 drives, then I'll never get to Windows 7 again (should I ever need it ) without much gyrations. I've also tried booting from gparted-live and it does not see them either.

Some posts say 11.3 and newer automatically detect drives that have 4kb sectors, and partition things accordingly. But other recent posts specifically about 11.4 say, no, you still have to prepare the drive manually before installing, to be sure things are optimized.

I just got OpenSuSe 11.3 installed in a machine with two 160GB drives. I took all defaults at installation, works fine. Going to YaST expecting to detect and partition it. Not there. System Information, however 'sees' both disks. How do I partition and attach this disk?

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, everything seems to be working fine except that my other hard disk partitions are un mountable as my normal user. I used to be able to click on the drive in Dolphin and it would ask for the root password to mount it, but now it gives the error that the action is denied by org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result) What do I do to fixed this? I have checked as many settings as I can and can't find it. I would like to avoid editing the Policykit.conf file manually if possible (if that even is the right file).

I have 3 separate hard drives. Drives 1 and 2 are striped together and I have openSUSE 11.3 installed. On the third disk I have WindowsXP-64 Professional. I installed SUSE first with the third disk unplugged. I then installed WinXP with the two SUSE disks unplugged. My fdisk -l is:
Disk /dev/sdb: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I used to dual boot openSuse and XP but I yanked out my linux HDD and now my Windows will not boot, I get a GRUB error 22 (missing partition).This PC does not have a CDrom so I can not simply use the fixmbr from an XP recovery console.I have booted into opensuse Live CD (Flash Drive) and tried to use Yast but it gives me an error it can not write because of the partitioning. I also tried the recover shell but am totally lost trying to re-write GRUB because I can not find the menu.lst file.

How do I access a flash drive? I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I would think plugging it in would auto detect but that does not happen. I have tried several different flash drives. I stick them into a USB slot and nothing. I went into Places.Computer and Places.Home Folder. It's not showing there either. I tried several different USB ports. It appears Ubuntu can't detect USB flash drives.

The problem of slow usb transfer speeds has been half solved in Lucid. I'm getting 25 mbps plus speeds when it comes to transferring data to portable hard drive. But with my Kingston flash drive the speeds are still as low as 2 mbps. Is this because some flash drives are not meant to be compatible with Ubuntu?

I'm buying a new memory stick online, but on the page I'm buying it from, it says "OS Required: Microsoft Windows XP, Apple MacOS X 10.1.2, Microsoft Windows Vista / 7" so I'm wondering does this mean it won't work in Linux (Ubuntu)? Because i thought that flash drives were independent of OS.

I have 64bit Maverick installed and am using VirtualBox 3.2.12 to run 32bit XP Home. In the devices menu, nearly all the USB devices are grayed out. The printer is the only exception. It is working fine. If I plug in a flash drive (memory stick or whatever one wants to call it), Ubuntu sees it and it appears in the menu but is grayed out. When I remove the device, it disappears from the menu. This tells me that VirtualBox sees them. How do I get to access these USB devices? What have I omitted to do?

I have Mandriva 08 with Gnome and Nautilus. My O.S won't open a desktop icon but it does show up in "Computer" and HardDrake. If I go to "Places" "Computer" and open up the "Preferences" there is "Settings" which I will include as an attachment. What is the GUI way to use a Flash drive or a MP3 device on Linux. I would rather not use the terminal if it is not necessary.

I'm using openSUSE 11.2, with some eSATA hard drives. For some reason, they're set to read-only, and I can't change it. I set parameters in fstab as fmask=113,dmask=002,umask=0002,rw Oddly, I was able to delete a file in there, but my samba users have read-only access, and I can't use chown or chmod: I get no error message, but nothing happens.

I just made a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4-Tumbleweed and have the latest updates. However fstab lines I've used in the past are not working.
Here's an example of two:
//IPADDRESS/share /home/user/mount cifs credentials=/home/user/.scripts/.creds,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users 0 0
//IPADDRESS/share /home/user/mount cifs guest,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users
I can execute a command
Code:
sudo mount /home/user/mount and it works, but I'm wanting all my fstab lines to automount at boot as on other machines.

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

We were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.
