I'm using openSUSE 11.2, with some eSATA hard drives. For some reason, they're set to read-only, and I can't change it. I set parameters in fstab as fmask=113,dmask=002,umask=0002,rw Oddly, I was able to delete a file in there, but my samba users have read-only access, and I can't use chown or chmod: I get no error message, but nothing happens.
View 6 RepliesI'm currently setting up a laptop for my grandparents to use. They have never used a computer before, so I'm trying to make this as fool-proof as possible. The system will be setup with Ubuntu 10.10. In order to save them the hassle of having to unmount USB drives before disconnecting them, I would like to have all USB drives auto-mounted as read-only (possible use cases for now only include them getting data from people, not them copying anything to the drive). I have so far found that gnome-volume-manager is responsible for the handy auto-mount, but I didn't find any way to set options, like always mounting drives read-only.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, everything seems to be working fine except that my other hard disk partitions are un mountable as my normal user. I used to be able to click on the drive in Dolphin and it would ask for the root password to mount it, but now it gives the error that the action is denied by org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result) What do I do to fixed this? I have checked as many settings as I can and can't find it. I would like to avoid editing the Policykit.conf file manually if possible (if that even is the right file).

After installing 11.4 my fstab entries for CD and DVD drives as well as floppy generate errors when I try to mount them automatically or via Nautilus when inserting CD or DVD. The icons and CD/DVD name show up ok but will not mount. Manually mounting via terminal command works. Here are the relevant lines from fstab

In /dev scd0 and scd1 are symlinks pointing to sr0 and sr1 respectively. The above error message was generated after attempting to load a CD in scd0 i.e. my laptop internal CD/DVD drive. Lines 10,11 and 12 are the fstab lines quoted above.
I need some assistance mount a UFS2 partition as read and write. if its not possible, then I may have to copy a few hundred GBs of data. Currently using the command: Code: mount -r -t ufs -o ufstype=UFS2 /dev/sdb /Data Thats just read only.

So I booted it up with the install disc and got into the rescue mode but I am not sure how or which system to mount to change the root password I tried sda and sda1 but it errored out with unknown system type
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.

I got my system up and running with the Grub installed on my primary hard drive. I have not installed 2 additional drives. I would like to combine the 2 additional drives into a RAID 1 array. I can only find tutorials on how to do this during initial install. I cannot find one that tell me how to do it after the install. Is there a way?

After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?

I'm looking for a way to install kdebase 4.7 with no additional dependencies. My target is home desktop and I only want these : kdm, plasma, ark, dolphin, kdesu, konsole, okteta, kwrite, kate, kmix, ksnapshot. There are things I don't use but they get installed anyway and break kdm if removed. These things are : akonadi, strigi, nepomuk, virtuoso, kfind, kgreeter and a couple of others, including libqtzeitgeist0 and PIM in general. Also I don't want kdm 4.7 features hence I use kdm3 as a login manager. Is there a 4.7 build that doesn't mind the removal of so called base components? If not, is there a 4.4 repo for 11.4?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent update, when ever I attempt to open a ".ogv" extension from within Dolphin File Mananger in KDE4.4.2, I get a window that pops up every time for Checking For additional Software to install. It does this in spite of the fact I already have several players and the default set to SMPlayer to play the files. How do I turn this behavior off? It's really annoying because you either have to wait for it to finish checking (and finding nothing BTW) or Cancel it in order to play the file. This just started recently. I don't see anything obvious in Dolphin configuration, but I'm not even sure it's related to Dolphin at all.

Dmesg and tail -f /var/log/messages output the following error:

I suspect there is a bug or incompatablitiy with HAL/dbus/udisks but I cannot track it down.
I recently migrated from Ubuntu 10.10 to Opensuse 11.3
I sometimes need lxsplit to join splitted files.
In Ubuntu I installed lxsplit from the repos but I can't find it in the Add/Remove software, here in opensuse.
Do I need to enable any additional repos to install lxsplit?
I have booted up from openSUSE 11.3 on a USB stick. When i go into Dolphin (the file explorer) and try to open a harddrive, I get the error:

Since I installed 11.3 I have noticed the /srv and /local mount points are empty! I also can no longer see my hard drives that have no mount points. I couldn't mount any hot plug media either but now have that fixed. I won't go into the mess I have with my video card and getting the x server started....
I did have Xampp installed to /srv/www but don't even know where it is now!

I had no problems with this in 11.1 until a month ago when I updated and it seemed to keep losing the permissions for these drives as once I accessed them via Dolphin they would be accessible. Now they are not even visible in a file manager!
I recently had issues with the latest version of the Linux Kernels and I got that fixed but ever since that has happened none of my Drives will mount and they aren't even recognized.

GRUMPY is the name of my NAS by the way! It mounts properly, BUT i cannot delete or rename files, so basically the user "matt" has read only privileges, and root has ownership of the mount. How do I go about mounting these so that user "matt" has RW privileges?
When I log on as root user and mount them, I can read and write as required, so this has led me to believe that my problem lies in my permissions for matt when mounting them... I posted on the netgear forum and was asked to try and mount using the following command:

I just installed 11.04 beta yesterday and was following along with this article so I could setup a "Storage" partition and always have access to the same files in win 7 or ubuntu. [URL]
The problem happens when you try to install and use ntfs-config and run it. Here is the description from the article:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using the mount command to mount Windows shared folders are another machine on my LAN, to have them show up in the Linux filesystem. The command mounts the folders just fine, however the access is read-only.
In the command, I am also using the -o option to specify a username and password that should have full access. Also, I have used this identical command on my other distros and it seems to work fine. I've Googled high and low, trying to find a way to specify a Samba user/password for authentication. I know one of the other distros had a program that I could specify a Samba user/password to simulate a Windows login.
I am trying to mount the device sdb in the folder /mirror so I issue the command dmd@dolly:/$ sudo mount /dev/sdb mirror. I would now expect to see the contents of sdb in /mirror but instead of mounting in /mirror it is being mounted in /mirror/mirror and the second mirror folder is created during the mount
dmd@dolly:/mirror$ ls - returns no results
I then say dmd@dolly:/$ sudo mount /dev/sdb mirror and look for my mounted files in /mirror and I see this
dmd@dolly:/$ cd mirror
dmd@dolly:/mirror$ ls
lost+found mirror (an additional mirror folder)
mount says
/dev/sdb on /mirror type ext4 (rw)
I'm sure I'm just doing something goofy or otherwise have screwed things up but I've tried this several times with re-boots in the middle and wherever I choose to mount sdb it ends up being mounted one level lower in a folder of the same name.

I have the following situation:We have a DELL T3400 with embedded fake raid on it. I dont know exactly how the system was setup (I wasnt here at that time), but the RAID was enabled in bios and while booting, the two harddrives would be seen as members of intel raid volume0 (RAID 1 mirror). I am not sure if the software raid was actually properly configured in Linux (Fedora 9) and if the OS was reconstructing the whole raid or it was just the bios part that was mirroring the /boot or just some parts of it. Frankly I find these hydrid raids very confusing.Some bad disk manipulation from my part caused the server to crash, but I was able to recover and boot just with one hard drive after using fsck.
I decided to get rid of the raid as it's not the right solution for the application we need it for and decided to go for a traditional single harddrive system and to use Ghost for Linux to clone to a spare disk when backups are needed.So I installed the latest Fedora 12 distribution onto another harddrive and disabled RAID in bios (changed from RAID ON to autodetect, which is the only other option).
Here is what I have now:
/dev/sda has the newly installed fedora 12
/dev/sdb is an empty harddrive that I would use as an intermediate
/dev/sdc is the old harddrive member of intel raid volume0
sdb was partitioned into sdb1 sdb2 and sdb3 and I created an ext3 filesystem on sdb2. The hard drive belonging to RAID volume0 (sdc) has a lot of work done on it and I would like to be able to recuperate the files to the new disk (sda). I cannot mount that old harddrive while in fedora 12, as it sees some unknown raid member filesystem on it probably assigned by the intel raid chip.
So I decided to do it from the other side: to boot from raid volume 0, and from there mount a third intermediate harddrive (sdb) onto which I would copy the documents and then mount the same harddrive from the newly installed fedora 12 and copy those documents from that intermediate harddrive.I can mount /dev/sdb2 from fedora 12 fine and copy stuff to and from it, but not when I boot from the RAID volume 0 harddrive (sdc) with fedora 9 on it. It keeps saying that the partition in question (/dev/sdb2) is an invalid block device.I am stuck here, as my knowledge in this sort of things is very limited.If somebody can indicate me how to recuperate files from that old raid harddrive onto the new fedora 12 drive, I would appreciate a lot.
I just built a new system which has 4 SATA 3 Drives and 2 SATA 6 drives. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium which has 2 SATA 6 ports through a Marvel controller.I have Windows 7 loaded on one of those SATA 6 drives and it recognizes and boots fine. My intent was to load openSUSE 11.3 on the other SATA 6 drive all by itself and then use the SATA 3 drives as other file systems. When I go to install, the only drives that the openSUSE installer sees are the 4 SATA 4 drives, the SATA 6 drives do not appear at all. Note that when the system boots from the DVD the load of the Marvel Controller says IDE Passthrough Mode and displays those two drives. So how do I get openSUSE to see those drives so I can install and setup Grub to boot from there. I'm afraid if I install to just the SATA 3 drives, then I'll never get to Windows 7 again (should I ever need it ) without much gyrations. I've also tried booting from gparted-live and it does not see them either.
