I'm trying to install 10.04b2 x64 on my new rig and for some reason the live cd can't detect both of my 1TB Sata 3 drives. There is no Raid and the bios has them flagged as IDE. I have also tried adding pci=nomsi to the boot string to no avail.

I'm in rescue mode with Centos 5.2 disk trying to install/mount a new disk to extract data out from the failed server.
Plugged in a new SATA drive and syslog shows the drive being detected
SCSI device sdg: blah
sdg: Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
sdg: unknown partition table
sd 3:0:0:0: attached scsi disk sdg
However fdisk and mount does not find the drive. I tried echo "---" /sys/class/scsi_host/host3/scan based on one of the previous threads but get "write error: invalid argument".
how should I get the drive to be usable?
I tried to install 11.04, but the partition tool shows no HDD. If I try to run Ubuntu from the CD, I can explore the HDD but the partition tool in the installation program won't find it. What can be wrong with my Promise SATA controller
View 8 Replies View Relatedused to run ARC linux and Windows 7 on my computer and i am now trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 X86_64When i used the live disc of Ubuntu 10.04 and load the installer it finds my four harddrive they way it should... sda,sdb,sdc,and sdd...When i however try the same with ubuntu 10.10 it displays my usb cardreaders drives first and then my hardrives as sde sdf sdg and sdh.I tried installing ubuntu with the reader unplugged and then reconnecting it after installation...But when i then boot with the reader attached it says it cannot mount drives sda,sdb,sdc and sdd becuase they are not ready.I think it is again detecting the usb cardreader before the sata controller ...Is there a way for me to alter the boot detection order so it will find my harddrives first and then the usb cardreaders ports ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Debian 5.0 "Lenny" on a PC with a very new hardware config (i3 processor, DDR3 RAM,LG SATA DVD drive, and Seagate SATA HDD). During the hardware detection phase of installation, I get a message saying the driver for my CD drive is not known, and asking me to select one manually. The options I get are only 'devcdrom', which does not work, and my installation cannot proceed.
I tried the following:
1. I read in a similar query that to use SATA DVD drives, I will have to set some boot options, so tried entering install libatapi_enabled=1 as an install option. This showed 'unknown parameter' error followed by same problem.
2. My Intel m/b BIOS has an option to set the DVD drive to "Native" or "Legacy", default is Native. I also tried changing this to "Legacy". Still same problem.
3. Read that I have to point to different drivers, but don't know how to do this during the installation.
Just what the title says ... I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 and it does not detect either 300G SATA drive in my system. One of them is /home for my non-OS software and the other is used for data storage.
It does detect the drive (SDC) where I have 9.04 installed, but /home is on one of the SATA drives. Where to start? 9.04 works just fine, but I'm running tio problems with FLASH web sites insisting I have to upgrade Flash and Adobe doesn't have anything for 9.04.

The system is running great in fedora 7 or 12 with 6 sata drives installed. I tried to install 2 more sata drives(total 8 drives), tested some combinations: 6 drives in sata ports and 2 in sas ports, or 2 in sata ports and 6 in sas ports... the BIOS can detect all 8 drives, but the fedora 7 and 12 just detect 6 sata drives. It could be problem of sata/sas drivers of Linus. The chip set: Intel ESB2(6 ports) + LSI 1068E SAS controller(8 sas/sata ports) Linux: Fedora 7 and Fedora 12
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 500gig SATA drive and a 320gig IDE drive installed in an HP a6700y/9150e 1.8GHz Quad, 4 gig ram... The Fedora installer only sees the 500g SATA drive, and not the 320g IDE drive where I want to install Fedora. Now I know that I can't always get what I want, but in this case I am not willing to mess with the working Vista installation just to get Fedora installed.
Vista BTW sees the 320 just fine. I am clueless as to where to begin with this. I gave up in Fedora with my Celeron based machine because of speed issues.... But this new box should have more than enough horsepower to run F!
I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 via a DVD-ROM but I faild. I got the message "no common cd-rom drive was detected." I have tried to install ubuntu 11.4 and failed too.
Hardware Setting:
DVD-ROM was attached to SATA 3.0 port.
SATA controller was set to IDE mode.
PCH is CougarPoint.
I use the same hardware setting to install Red Hat 6.0 and it works fine. I tried following boot option but in vain: noapic, acpi=off, nodmraid, all_generic_ide. It is ok to boot via a live usb but ubuntu 10.10 still can't find DVD-ROM. I have to use the hardware setting I descripted to install Ubuntu 10.10.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install F11 from full media onto Abit IP35 Pro m/b connected to two (unitilized) Seagate 300GB SATA drives (7200.9) and attempting to create a software RAID1 setup as I have in FC8. I am using the graphical setup (as I have in other releases.) However, the ONLY "drive" shown when creating a RAID partion is /dev/mapper/nvidia_jhhdfjhf with free space of 286165 MB. There is not /dev/sda0, /dev/sda1 drives that I would have expected to see.
NOTE: All BIOS options for SATA are set to "IDE", not RAID or AHCI. The Seagate Seatools software sees both SATA drives and all tests are successful. What now? It seems like this is a major step backwards from F10. It does not seem mere mortals can install with RAID1 on this motherboard.
I just built a new system which has 4 SATA 3 Drives and 2 SATA 6 drives. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium which has 2 SATA 6 ports through a Marvel controller.I have Windows 7 loaded on one of those SATA 6 drives and it recognizes and boots fine. My intent was to load openSUSE 11.3 on the other SATA 6 drive all by itself and then use the SATA 3 drives as other file systems. When I go to install, the only drives that the openSUSE installer sees are the 4 SATA 4 drives, the SATA 6 drives do not appear at all. Note that when the system boots from the DVD the load of the Marvel Controller says IDE Passthrough Mode and displays those two drives. So how do I get openSUSE to see those drives so I can install and setup Grub to boot from there. I'm afraid if I install to just the SATA 3 drives, then I'll never get to Windows 7 again (should I ever need it ) without much gyrations. I've also tried booting from gparted-live and it does not see them either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently built a new system which has two internal sata drives. The plan was to install windows 7 one drive and ubuntu 10.10 on the second drive for KVM hosts. I started with the windows install which completed, then I went forward and installed ubuntu 10.10 64bit to my second drive (sdb). During the installation I chose to manually partition my drive. i partitoned the drive (sdb) as follows
/boot - 1gb
/ 40gb
swap 16gb
extended partion of 400gb
I then selected sdb to hold the boot record, as it was set by default to sda (my windows drive). The OS installed fine. I then went to reboot my system so go back into windows, by selecting the first drive in the bios. Once selected the system keeps booting into Ubuntu, no matter which drive I select. Now I checked the grub.cfg file and i see all references to hd1 there is no reference for windows found. I then proceeded to do 'sudo update grub2' this did not pickup any reference to my windows droive to add to the grub menu. When i select the ubuntu drive to boot fom my bios, i get no grub menu appaer it just boots quite happily into ubuntu. Can anyone please provide any resoloution to this, I can provide additonal outputs regarding my partion tables etc. later this evening when I get back from work.
The hard disk is seen in the BIOS.
The partitions on it are accessible via the Places Menu on the Lucid Live CD.
It's just when I try to install, nothing is detected in Step 4 of 8, "Prepare Partitions".
An old 80GB IDE disk, on the other hand is seen by the partitioner.
I am not using RAID and it is not enabled in the BIOS.
I have the following PC set up:
Dell 8400 with 3 GB of RAM with 3 160 GB SATA drives:
The first one has Windows XP installed on it.
The second one has been newly formatted and Ubuntu 10.04 has just been installed on it (20 GB / and 6 GB swap) with grub being installed on the first partition and not the master boot record. The remainder will be for storage for Windows.
The third drive is simply storage for Windows.
At this point I am able to boot XP just fine, but I'm not able to boot Linux. I just getting a blinking cursor or the PC just reboots when I choose Linux. I believe I have set up my boot.ini properly using:
C:Bootsectc.lnx="Linux Ubuntu"
After running dd if=/dev/sdc1 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 and putting that file in place.
For reference, I don't believe this is a Linux problem, as much as I am simply trying to guide the ntldr to be properly pointed to a place where it can boot Linux. When I go into the bios and disable the first and the third hard drives, grub pops right up and I'm able to boot Linux with no problem, so that piece is fine. I think it's just now trying to get the correct syntax so I can boot Linux without having to disable drives and reenable them.
For kicks I even tried these syntax types in boot.ini:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)="Linux11"
(i.e. 2nd disk, 1st partition ...etc...)
I read many troubleshooting documents on dual booting and so forth but I just can't get this right. For reference, I stated the way XP views my Hard Drives in the intro, which seem to be a different order than Linux sees them, yet I believe I've tried all the combos of settings for this to work (yet clearly have not). I have attached the output of boot_info_script*.sh here: [URL]. Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ..... Devices which don't seem to have a corresponding hard drive.
There is a FC4 Server with A8V-MX mobo currently running 2x WD500 SATA drives in RAID1 with a third WD500 SATA drive for data backup. This machine has been running 24/7 since January 2007.The plan is to replace the WD500s with WD 2TB SATA II drives in a similar setup as above. i.e. 2 drives in RAID1 and the third drive for data backup.Definitely looking to do a clean Fedora 14 install on the 2TB but have some questions.
1. Will Fedora 14 detect the VT8251 connected SATA drives?
2. If not, how do I get drivers so it will? (I have the mobo CD with makedisk, but prob for windows)

I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?
I can't finish installing Ubuntu 10.04. I have a Corsair Nova 128 GB solid state drive, the 128 GB model of this series, to be precise. I have an ASUS P5N-T Deluxe motherboard. It has a six xSATA 3 Gb/s ports NVIDIA MediaShield RAID controlelr on it. In Disk Utility, it shows up as nVidia Corporation MCP55 SATA Controller, using the sata_nv driver. I have the 128 GB drive plugged into one of these ports. I have disabled RAID completely in the BIOS.
When I boot the Live CD and run GParted, the drive shows up fine. I've got a 70.81 GiB NTFS partition (Windows 7), a 4.00 GiB swap partition, and a 44.43 GiB ext4 partition, onto which I had planned to install Ubuntu 10.04. I created the swap and ext4 partitions earlier, but at one point, that was unpartitioned space.
The problem is that when I run the Install app to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my SSD, when I get to step 4 of 8 (Prepare partitions), exactly zero drives show up. A while ago, I had a couple of Seagate 1.5 TB mirrored drives plugged into two of the ports, and they showed up fine, but no 128 GB SSD. In trying to troubleshoot this problem, I unplugged those and just left the SSD, and zero drives showed up. I disabled RAID in the BIOS, and it still doesn't show up. I moved the SSD from the port it was plugged into and plugged it into one of the ports that one of the 1.5 TB drives was plugged into. It still doesn't show up.
Nuts and bolts of it: Seagate 1.5 TB drive plugged into port: no problem. Corsair Nova 128 GB SSD plugged into port: doesn't show up. But again, only in the Install utility. In Disk Utility under SATA Host Adapter/MCP55 SATA Controller, I see 128 GB Solid-State Disk/ATA Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 listed plain as day. In GParted, I see a 119.24 GiB /dev/sda device with the partitions I've created on it plain as day. I can pull up a terminal and mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/ssd without any problem and access files on it. But for whatever reasons, the Install program and only the Install program can't see it. I'm dead in the water. Obviously, I can't use Ubuntu if I can't install it. What can I do to get this disk drive detected?

I am installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my new Mac Mini. It has 2 500GB hard-drives, and I have created a partition for Ubuntu. During installation, however, Ubuntu is not able to detect my disk drive, neither my network interface. So I am not able to 'Partition Disks' which is part of Ubuntu installation. Did any of you encounter this problem? Any solutions or workarounds? Should I setup my disks in anyway before installation or use boot args?

And when the installer try to find storage devices - it can not find any hard drivers. We are have message on screen - "Finding storage devices" and the installation process is not continue.... Fedora 10 and Fedora 11 x86_64 are installed very well. The device /dev/cciss/c0d0 is present in system and all it partitions - c0d0p1, c0d0p2 ... Command fdisk -l /dev/cciss/c0d0 has no any output.

I've bought a new e-sata external HDD. It work fine if it's connected throught USB. The problem goes when I connect it throught e-sata. The disk isn't detected (see the first screenshot).I must restart my computer to get the HDD detected (the HDD must be pluged in while booting, I think).Is it possible to repair that? I need the HDD to be detected immidiately when connected, like USB, without any restart.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI realize this has been asked many times before, but I'm fairly certain I've read through the majority of those threads and haven't found a working solution yet. I recently built up a Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64 box for backups, serving up files, and development activities. The server is running SATA drives in AHCI mode. Because this is a file server I have quite a few hard drives installed, which are currently a mix of WD 1TB Black and Green drives. I'm attempting to get my non-boot/data only drives to spin down after 10 minutes. I've tried the following:
1. Edit hdparm.conf with the following, replacing 'b' with the identifier for each disk:

This fails, and based on my research I'm pretty sure udev isn't properly running the hdparm configuration anyway.
2. I've also tried manually setting the spin down time with hdparm as follows (via command line and through rc.local):

hdparm -q -S 120 /dev/sdb
Which states that it successfully set the spin down timer to 10 minutes, but this also fails as the drive never spins down.
3. Finally, I just forced it to spin down immediately with:

hdparm -y /dev/sdb
This worked! Unfortunately, that approach isn't terribly useful. The drive stayed spun down for 20 minutes (thus far), so I haven't bothered to run iostat, etc to try and figure out if something is keeping the drives active. I don't believe there is because one of my drives isn't even mounted currently and it also won't spin down automatically.
(Ubuntu 10.10) I went to System->Preferences->Power Management and checked spin down hard disks whet possible. I have two internal sata hard drives. One is for the OS and the other is for media. Neither Hard disk is being spun down. Is there something else I need to do?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI asked this on an Ubunut forum about a year or so ago but got no response. I have an Asus M2NE-SLI motherboard. All my HDD's are Sata. I have 2 burners - both IDE. For windows, it see's my hard drives in the order I have them setup according to their cable placement on the motherboard (Sata ports 1-3, Sata 4 I have set for external sata). However within Linux - and I mean any linux distro I've tried (Gentoo, Sabayon, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, even Gparted) see's my Sata drives completly out of order.
For example:
Sata Port 1 - Primary HDD - 500GB
Sata Port 2 - Secondary - 500GB
Sata Port 3 - Secondary - 250GB
Windows see's them as drives C:, D:, E: Respectivly Linus see's:
Sata Port 1: SDB
Sata Port 2: SDC
Sata Port 3: SDA
Or something like that. Its really messed up. Does anyone know what could be causing this? This causes all sorts of problems setting up a dual boot environment because Windows will place its boot loader on the Primary boot drive (Sata Port 1), Grub will install anywhere i tell it to, but because the drive order is messed up it breaks - unless I completely mess around with the drive order in the bios. I've resorted to putting Windows on one HDD, and Linux on an old external Sata for the time being, and use the Bios's Drive Boot Manager to select which drive to use. This is not the ideal way to run it.
I have a i3 processor and MSI p55-cd53 motherboard. My problem is fedora cannot detect the 2nd SATA, so that I can configure raid1.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a working F-10 box with an older motherboard (pre-sata). The p-ata ports are full (4 drives), so I'm trying to add a sata controller and another drive. The sata controller plugs into the pci bus, but is not detected by the bios (very old). After booting, the OS loads the driver module(s) and detects the new controller and drive. I was able to add the new sata drive into the LVM system using system-config-lvm. All was fine until I rebooted.
I get pages of lvm errors and booting fails. It looks like it's trying to mount the volumes before the sata controller is modprobed. Is there a way to get the os to modprobe for the new controller before trying to mount? The extra drive space is on a data partition, not the boot partition.
