I recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.
I had Windows 7 ultimate installed on my netbook and installed Ubuntu 10.10 using the 'Install alongside other OS's' option which put windows onto another partition and created one for ubuntu.
Anyway I've tried reinstalling the grub but I never get a grub boot menu when I boot it up and the grub won't recognize the windows install
I have been upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04. Now, I want to install 10.10 from the beginning without losing the data in my current partitions but when I run the Maverick installer it recognize my disk as a whole with no partitions. From another posts, I suspect that the problem is in the partition list because it seems to be a duplicate partition but don't know how to fix it. This is the fdisk output:

I have a gateway laptop that I have attempted to dual boot, but the computer only sees the Ubuntu OS and the Vista Windows Recovery Partition. (Actually, gnome reports 3 separate Ubuntu OSs... part of the problem?)

So I am experimenting with other linux distros.....I just installed a small partition with OpenGEU, the one still based on Ubuntu.....now it wont recognize Mint. Ubuntu Studio is next on my list, but before I invest any more work I want to make sure I can add more partitions to grub, not just the most recent linux partition...
I think that future distros of linux should have a fix for this....if you install linux it should detect every other operating system on the disk, not just windows plus the most recent linux install.
install /boot separate? I always create a / and /home partition but never separate boot. Does that make life easier?
First time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub. Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno. edit; Here's fdisk with Fedora on sda6
i can't boot up my win XP after installing Ubuntu 10.10.
I decided to replace my Vista partition with Ubuntu 10.10 so i redo my partitions and split the current Vista partition to a swap and root partition and install Ubuntu 10.10
Everything went well and i got Ubuntu up and running. However, i realize that GRUB 2 didn't recognize my existing windows partition. I double-check on grub.cfg and see that the default os_prober didn't recognize my XP partition either.
After search on the internet for a while, i found many similar issue where most are fix when manually adding the entry yourself so i decided to add an entry 11_XP under /ect/grub.d/ for windows XP and confirm that the new entry are added to the update grub.cfg file before restarting

This is my first time to post a thread.I'm not native English-speaker,so my English is poor.And I wish you can understand what I mean. I have used wubi for months.Today I decide to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my harddisk.I create a liveUSB to install 10.04.But the problem during installing is when partition detecting,the windows partition can't be detected.It shows 'Ubuntu' on /dev/sda1,but in fact it is the windows partition.I ignore it and go on.After all done,10.04 can work well,but windows can't be booted. Then I try to use 9.04 CD to install,and it shows 'Widows NT/2000/XP' on /dev/sda1 correctly.At last,both 9.04 and windows xp can be booted. Is it the problem involving the difference between CD and liveUSB,or 10.04 and 9.04? Can you tell me why and give me a hand?
My computer is currently dual boot: Windows 2000 on first hard drive (master) and Ubuntu 9.10 on the second hard drive (slave) using GRUB 2. Both drives are on the first IDE channel. I have a third drive with a DVD/CD drive on the second IDE channel (master and slave respectively). The only thing on this drive is my photo library, which is backed up on a server.If I were to temporarily remove the plug for the first two drives from the mother board and plug the third hard drive and DVD drive into the first IDE channel and install Windows XP on the third hard drive from the CD ROM, I would have a functioning Windows XP computer with just the hard drive and CD/DVD drive. The system would not know of the existence of the dual-boot configuration.
Now the question: Obviously, if I plug the drives back in the way they were originally, I will not have the choice on GRUB to boot into Windows XP on the third hard drive on the second IDE channel. When running from Ubuntu, can I do a GRUB update, and will it recognise the new Windows XP drive as a bootable option in the GRUB menu?I really don't want to take the chance of destroying my current dual-boot configuration (Win 2000/Ubuntu 9.10) by installing Windows XP on the third drive with the first two drives plugged in.I don't really want to take the time to experiment if there's no chance that GRUB will recognise the new Windows drive.I know. I'm a little old-fashioned. But when all my applications work fine on both platforms with the hardware
I've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
I've had Ubuntu 10.10 installed for a while and I recently cleared a partition to install Windows XP. However, when I load from the Windows XP boot CD, I get "7379one MB disk 0 at ID 0 on ?Bus 0 on atapi(Setup cannot access this disk)". I've tried just about everything
I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?
I have a sandisk sd card with 3 partitions two ext2 and one fat 32 partition for some reson Ubuntu only automounts two ext2 partitions. I've tried inserting another card with only one fat32 partition and the system doesn't mount it. Both cards are visible in gparted byt not in "Places" menu.
I was using GParted Live to resize my Windows XP partition on my desktop aaaaand... it rebooted properly and now says "no such partition" and won't boot from anything. It doesn't even recognize my dell utilities partition. I can boot to the GParted Live disk - and that is all. So I'm relatively certain that I just destroyed something
I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows
I have been using fedora 12 for quite some time. When i first installed Fedora on my new system i created 2 ntfs partitions on the hard disk using mkfs.ntfs and in the space at the end of the disk i have Fedora. recently i tried installing Win7 but it didnt recognise the partitions even tho they are NTFS. I had to format 1st partition from setup to install Win7. After boot i find that Win7 doesn't recognise the 2nd partition as welL. The partitions are working fine in Fedora.
i have a 250gb hdd and a 160 hdd. i installed wind0ws 7 on the 250 and then ubuntu 10.10 on the 160. In the past (8.04-10.04) after install ubuntu on boot grub would give me the option to go into ubuntu or windows, now ti doesnt give me that option and boots directly into ubuntu. I dont even think it has recognized that windows is there.
I just installed ubuntu on a partition on my laptop that already had a windows7 partition. First I had Kubuntu installed, but I decided to just try Ubuntu instead. I did things the right way when I installed Kubuntu and I could switch between OSes on reboot. Then when I installed Ubuntu I accidentally put grub on /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda. I didn't even notice for a while because I never felt like I needed to go back to Windows until I felt like playing starcraft 2. That's when I noticed that when the boot options screen appears and I select Windows, the screen goes black, a cursor flashes in the upper left corner for about a second, then the boot options screen reappears.
If I boot using my windows 7 cd and go into recovery, get a command prompt and type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot, the options appear to complete successfully, but then when I reboot, I get a permanent flashing cursor.
If I follow that by inserting my parted magic cd and running testdisk and overwriting the mbr, I get back to the first situation where the boot options screen will appear, but the windows boot loader just returns me to the boot options screen. I can get into ubuntu, at least. Whenever I run testdisk I can't replace the boot with the backup boot because I'm pretty sure it's identical to the flawed one.
got myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.
I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.
I tried to search around for a way to access my windows partition from within Linux. I was unable to mount the same using "mount" command. I read of a tool "ntfs-config" as well, this too didn't work for me.
Please share if anyone out there has an idea on how we can access the windows partition (NTFS) from within Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick.
I installed windows 7 after I installed linux. I got grub reinstalled but windows doesnt show up in the grup menu. So I run in linux sudo update-grub, but this doesnt find my windows system.

I've had a problem for a while-- when I save files on a USB stick in Ubuntu, then put it in a windows computer, it doesn't recognize the files. It only recognizes a video file that I have, but not the .doc files. The folders either don't appear or only appear as shortcuts.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.
I have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:

I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.
Before Christmas, I wiped all partitions off my Acer Aspire One D150 netbook and installed Jolicloud Linux to try out. It's great, but I'm missing too much of my Windows-only software so I'd like to switch back.The problem I'm having is that the Windows XP Home setup CD is starting up the installer fine, but when it comes to selecting the harddrive to install on it's not finding anything.I've tried using GParted to wipe all partitions again and create a new FAT32 partition, but that's not being picked up by Windows XP setup either. (I've tried setting the 'boot' flag on this partition in GParted as well, but no change.)Is FAT32 not the correct paritition type for Windows XP Home? I'm thinking this isn't relevant at this point, because Windows XP setup doesn't seem to be mounting the HDD, nevermind analysing what partitions it has on it already.
