I have a gateway laptop that I have attempted to dual boot, but the computer only sees the Ubuntu OS and the Vista Windows Recovery Partition. (Actually, gnome reports 3 separate Ubuntu OSs... part of the problem?)
When I type fdisk -l, I get the following message code...
is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.
View 9 Replies View Relatedit started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?
Well the title says it all.I dual booted Ubuntu 10.04 with windows 7 just for an experiment.It was fun while it lasted but my 3d programs dont like it. So all the threads I found are about people that did it wrong but I dont want to get that far. So it is a fresh start. How to I remove ubuntu 10.04 and Grub.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub.
Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno.

I recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using squeeze. I wanted to know how you could determine from the command line in tty1 (or tty2 through tty6) what the resolution was that text was being displayed at. Is there a way? I know that in grub, you're supposed to be able to go to the command line and type vbeinfo. I tried this and got some information, but somehow I think it doesn't always apply to the terminal after the computer has booted up.

I get a quick blue screen, and then it goes back to the grub menu. Ubuntu boots just fine. I occasionally have reason to boot into Windows. So it would be nice to get it working. My computer doesn't recognize when I put in my headphones.

I am having a problem installing Fedora from a CD.When I put the installation CD into the drive and restart the computer, the computer does not recognize the CD and boots automatically into my old version (version 8) of Fedora.I have already made sure that the CD drive comes before the HDD drive in my BIOS settings, and I have already tried using different CDs.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
I have been using fedora 12 for quite some time. When i first installed Fedora on my new system i created 2 ntfs partitions on the hard disk using mkfs.ntfs and in the space at the end of the disk i have Fedora. recently i tried installing Win7 but it didnt recognise the partitions even tho they are NTFS. I had to format 1st partition from setup to install Win7. After boot i find that Win7 doesn't recognise the 2nd partition as welL. The partitions are working fine in Fedora.

Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?
I have been upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04. Now, I want to install 10.10 from the beginning without losing the data in my current partitions but when I run the Maverick installer it recognize my disk as a whole with no partitions. From another posts, I suspect that the problem is in the partition list because it seems to be a duplicate partition but don't know how to fix it. This is the fdisk output:

I installed windows 7 after I installed linux. I got grub reinstalled but windows doesnt show up in the grup menu. So I run in linux sudo update-grub, but this doesnt find my windows system.

I've had a problem for a while-- when I save files on a USB stick in Ubuntu, then put it in a windows computer, it doesn't recognize the files. It only recognizes a video file that I have, but not the .doc files. The folders either don't appear or only appear as shortcuts.

I have used wubi for months.Today I decide to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my harddisk.I create a liveUSB to install 10.04.But the problem during installing is when partition detecting,the windows partition can't be detected.It shows 'Ubuntu' on /dev/sda1,but in fact it is the windows partition.I ignore it and go on.After all done,10.04 can work well,but windows can't be booted.
Then I try to use 9.04 CD to install,and it shows 'Widows NT/2000/XP' on /dev/sda1 correctly.At last,both 9.04 and windows xp can be booted.
Is it the problem involving the difference between CD and liveUSB,or 10.04 and 9.04?
Can you tell me why and give me a hand?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

Before Christmas, I wiped all partitions off my Acer Aspire One D150 netbook and installed Jolicloud Linux to try out. It's great, but I'm missing too much of my Windows-only software so I'd like to switch back.The problem I'm having is that the Windows XP Home setup CD is starting up the installer fine, but when it comes to selecting the harddrive to install on it's not finding anything.I've tried using GParted to wipe all partitions again and create a new FAT32 partition, but that's not being picked up by Windows XP setup either. (I've tried setting the 'boot' flag on this partition in GParted as well, but no change.)Is FAT32 not the correct paritition type for Windows XP Home? I'm thinking this isn't relevant at this point, because Windows XP setup doesn't seem to be mounting the HDD, nevermind analysing what partitions it has on it already.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhilst in fedora i deleted files off my second hard drive to free up some space, i deleted over 10gb worth of data. When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it
