Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 -> 11.04 Update Hang And Fail
May 5, 201110.10 -> 11.04 Update hang and fail I used Update manager to update and the screen froze at the end of the "installing updates" phase with 1 minute remaining, with the last message "Installed liblvm2app2.2"
After a power cycle I get the grub boot menu but after that a blank screen and then nothing
The PC is a triple boot with Windows XP and Slackware. I can still boot into Windows.

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.

Jan 20, 2010I was thinking of trying to install Window XP in a dual boot fashion but with the purpose of trying to configure wine to use it as it base instead of its normal setup. Only thing is Ubuntu is the sole controller of my laptop here atm and as you know installing XP will remove grub as boot controller. And while I know about SuperGrub I was wondering how, if possible,do I re-install grub from Karmic's LiveCD?

May 14, 2010I upgraded to 10.04 and cannot boot my system, even in recovery mode. No errors are shown, only some random color noise at the top of screen. I tried the 10.04 livecd and it doesnt boot eiter, it stops in busybox prompt with error: "Could not mount /dev/loop1 on /cow" or something like that. Before 9.10 was functioning perfectly.

Sep 24, 2010I've just downloaded ubuntu server 10.04.1 and put it on my usb flashdisk, the installation works fine until the point, where it tries to install grub.The thing is, that the installer is trying to write the grub to /dev/sda (which is my usb flashdisk) and not the raid itself.I'm using a fakeraid intel ich9r, which maps the newly created storage to /dev/mapper/isw_ecdhgaacgh_Volume0.Why doesn't install use that instead? It sees it, partitions it, even copies files to.

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.

Sep 18, 2009I had Win XP on my T61. I installed Fedora 11 from Gnome LiveCD. Now I cant even see GRUB. The laptop boots directly into Win XP. I had the partitions like this:
/dev/sda1 - Win XP - NTFS - 75 GB
/dev/sda2 - Win Recovery - NTFS - 5 GB
/dev/sda3 - /boot - ext3 - 1 GB
/dev/sda4 - Logical extended partition
/dev/sda5 - / - ext4 - 10 GB
/dev/sda6 - swap - 3 GB
Installed GRUB on the MBR (/dev/sda, and not on any partition). Once I completed installing Fedora 11 from the LiveCD and rebooted, the laptop directly boots into Win XP. No sign of Fedora there. How do I get to install GRUB now?

Apr 1, 2010I installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT240 1 Gb, 128bit DDR3) on my gigabyte VA900M motherboard, with my computer running a dual boot of windows 7 (64 bit) and ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit). The computer would not boot past the memory test stage. To solve this, i flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade for the motherboard from the Gigabyte website. This still did not work, so, doing the usual "testing hardware combinations by unplugging and replugging", I removed 1 Gb of RAM, which solved the problem of booting past memory test (a case of too much memory?)
Problem: The problem now is, GRUB wont boot from the HD, unless I have the Windows 7 disk (or Ubuntu Live) in the DVD drive. If i dont press a key to boot from the disk, Grub will then load. how to make GRUB boot from the HD? Do I need to redirect/reinstall GRUB? Im pretty sure it is not a BIOS problem.
Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot - Installer From F13 LiveCD Doesn't Detect Other OS - So Grub Conf Is Wrong
Oct 13, 2010I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?

May 23, 2010I have a Windows / Ubuntu dual boot system and I recently upgraded my system to 10.04 from the package manager. I ran into what seem to be not an unusual issue with the new version of GRUB2 being installed hosing up the MBR. When I try to boot now I get a message stating: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found.
There are a few posts and solutions out there about the issue... but the most promising ones, using the Ubuntu 10.04 liveCD don't work for me. The GRUB changes don't seem to stick. It's almost like I'm doing all the grub command line work in a virtual system that gets wiped out as soon as I reboot.
For reference, here is one of the posts I've been working w/, some links in there seemed very promising, but again nothing seem to stick for me from the liveCD:[URL]..Should I be using some rescue disk of some sort? Or is there a way to boot directly to a command line from the Ubuntu CD menu?

Oct 17, 2010So Im running windows, but I want to switch back to ubuntu. I have a spare hard drive for my laptop, so this is a basic one partition on one drive setup. The problem I'm having is the cd or dvd will not boot. I keep getting the grub error, rescue mode. I've read many of the other posts, but they are dual/triple boot, multiple drives, upgrades etc. I don't need any of that nonsense, just a simple explanation as to why the many copies of 10.10, and one of 10.4 give me the same error.

Oct 7, 2010The computer I'm using is a Dell Vostro 1000. If you need any specific stats, let me know and I'll post them, but I don't have access to anything that will list them.
As of this afternoon, Grub will not longer boot. I don't know what prompted it; the only change I made was to the power management settings and installing IcedTea. It brings me to "BusyBox" after saying "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." Then it brings me to some command prompt that doesn't respond to most bash commands I know, and it says "(initramfs)."
I had that problem two or three weeks ago after Fedora broke Grub, but I fixed it by using "grub-install" in an Ubuntu LiveCD. (No easy task to find what command I needed to use, though.)
But, now the LiveCD won't load. It hangs on the splash screen that just says "Ubuntu" with the dots underneath that indicate it's loading. This exact same disk (and I've reburned it, of course) worked fine when I had to clean up the mess that Fedora made. I tried switching to a terminal at the point where it hangs and there are no messages at all.
I already tried using acpi = off and burning the disk at the slowest speed (from two different computers).
I tried with the Mepis LiveCD, but the GUI just shows a blank screen. I can run commands using Alt+F2, and the cursor is visible, but that's it. I can switch to a terminal, but I can barely use grub-install at all as it is, and I can't figure out how to mount a drive through the command line.
An older version of a Sabayon Linux LiveCD works fine, but, unfortunately, doesn't do anything useful. I haven't tried Knoppix because it never worked on this computer.
If there are any other distros that I can use to run grub-install (preferably lightweight; I'm getting impatient downloading so many 700 mb iso files), I'm open to suggestion. Those are just the ones that I'm familiar with already.

Mar 26, 2010Is there something special I have to do to get grub to use UUID's? I am putting a couple of extra drives into a 9.10 system (default installation) with a SCSI drive for the OS. That SCSI drive was sda when I built the machine but of course gets bumped when I add these other drives. The fstab file contains UUID's. All attempts to boot with the other drives attached fail.

Jun 18, 2011I'm trying to install 10.04 LTS and everything goes great until I get to step 2 of 7 after clicking my time zone it just hangs up. I had no problems installing using the same live disk earlier today on another cpu, I even tried another image to see if that was the problem. Installing 11.04 goes great too on the same cpu.Edit: I should of mentioned this earlier, but I also can run directly from the cd. The only issue is when I try to install it.

May 2, 2010I'll say up front I'm still new to Ubuntu, so if I've missed anything obvious please forgive me. I chose to upgrade my 9.10 installation to 10.04 via the update manager. Especially since I was going to be gone for long periods of time, this seemed like a good idea.
Downloading went fine, but I had to leave for a two day trip once I clicked install. When I returned, I noticed the machine was still on the purple loading screen with four dots. When I shut it down and rebooted, it got to the same screen. Pressing escape to show the text behind the screen showed two fails and one oddity:

Ubuntu Installation :: Initial Install Seems To Hang For Very Long Time
Nov 19, 2010I'm attempting to install Kubuntu on a new laptop but seem to be having some strange issues. It's a Dell Latitude E5410 with 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel Core i5-520M(2.4GHz). I'm trying to install Kubuntu 10.10. When I restart the machine and boot from the CD for an initial install it seems to hang for a VERY long time. It will eventually get to the boot options (after hours) but seems sluggish. Once the install gets going everything seems decent except for that I can't seem to get it to finish. I know the CD is good since I used it to get Kubuntu on 2 desktops and another laptop in the last 48 hours. I've also burned another CD just to make sure. The checksum was spot on. Does anyone know what I can do to get this remedied?

Nothing happend so i ctrl-c it and the packet manger shows me no other errors or something else, even all the packages who was marked for upgrade are now upgraded but what about that python message? Do i have to do some check ? or maybe even a repair or even worse re install the OS?
