Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 - Boot Screen Hang?

May 2, 2010

I'll say up front I'm still new to Ubuntu, so if I've missed anything obvious please forgive me. I chose to upgrade my 9.10 installation to 10.04 via the update manager. Especially since I was going to be gone for long periods of time, this seemed like a good idea.

Downloading went fine, but I had to leave for a two day trip once I clicked install. When I returned, I noticed the machine was still on the purple loading screen with four dots. When I shut it down and rebooted, it got to the same screen. Pressing escape to show the text behind the screen showed two fails and one oddity:

(1) Setting sensors limits "Rather than invoking init scirpts through /etc/init.d, use the service( utility, e.g. service S49console-setup start

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job, you may also use the start( utility, e.g. start S49console-setup start: Unkown job: S49consile-setup"

(2) Starting VirtualBox kernel modules No suitable module for running kernels found

Fedora Installation :: White Macbook 5,2 Grub Lockup - Hang At Blank Screen

Jun 13, 2009

[code]...

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.

Ubuntu :: Nothing Booting - Install Updates Seemed To Hang

Apr 15, 2011

I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.

I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting - Screen Froze After The Splash Screen

Jul 21, 2010

I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.

Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

I tried booting up natty server on both a unetbootem usb flash drive install and on CD. I get the menu of options to install like Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Server 9 expert install, Cloud, etc. Hitting install either the 1st or 2nd option leads to a black screen but not at a frozen state(I can still reboot with ctrl-alt-del). The server Im installing on is a ibm system-x rack with a single xeon and a raid5 already setup to be used for installation. Now Im back to using lucid 10.04.2 which I might consider upgrading through Update Manager since I cant get natty to boot correctly with a working display. Anyone having similar problems on Natty server stable release? Also as I post this, I dont see a ubuntu server prefix, maybe it should be added?

Server :: Booting On New Kernel After Update - Screen Keeps Black

Jul 20, 2011

I've got a problem with my Ubuntu Server 11.04 amd64, I think the problem comes from GRUB 2. Here is my problem : I updated my server and I now have Linux 2.6.38-10-server (in addition to 2.6.38-8) and, when I try to boot on version "10", I think I have a Kernel Panic because the screen keeps black and there is no use of the HDD (I can ear it working with version "8"). I also looked at /boot/grub/grub.cfg and I didn't saw any diference between the lines for v10 and those for v8 (except for "8">"10" of course).

I tried with Recovery Mode too, with this result : Loading Linux 2.6.38-10-server... Loading initial ramdisk...

> No use of the HDD (I don't ear it), and it's "frozen", can't do anyting but reboot it by ACPI (nothing happend when hitting "Num Lock") Another question : can we have no submenus in Grub2?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen When Booting Into 10.10

Nov 8, 2010

I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my Windows7 64bit machine. I created the Ubuntu installation on a USB stick and when I run it live from the stick, it works fine. Under Windows7, I created a partition for Ubuntu, and after reboot run the installation off the USB stick. During installation, I pointed the installer to the partition I just created, and told it to use it as "/" (root - this is the part where I think I could have screwed up, but I am not sure). I want to have both Win7 and Ubuntu on that machine. I did not create the SWAP file as I don't think I'd need it (this is a 8Gb RAM 3Ghz i7 machine). The installation goes without any problem, but then I reboot...

When I restart after installation, and any time after that, I get to the grub screen that allows me to pick the system I want - and when I chose Win7, everything's fine. When I want to pick Ubuntu, or Ubuntu in recovery mode, the screen goes black, and after a short while it seems the monitor itself stops receiving any input from the computer, as it goes into standby. There is no error message, no restart of the computer, no message after I select Ubuntu and click enter. Nothing, just total blackness and despair, and a monitor in standby mode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen When Booting With 10.04 - Amd64?

May 2, 2010

I have a Asus A8N-E motherboard with AMD64 processor and NVidia 6600 GT graphics card.I downloaded the AMD64 version of 10.04 (the boot+live cd) and tried booting with it. After looking at the screen showing Ubuntu loading with 5 dots moving forward for about 5minutes, the screen went blank (not completely blank as power-off but a very dark grey color). I waited for about 10-15 minutes in this state but nothing happened.During this whole 10-15 min period the disk usage on the machine was high.Eventually, I just turned off the machine and booted into windows (which was already present on my machine) successfully. Is that blank screen for such a long duration a normal step during installation or was a different process expected?

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck With Black Screen On Booting After 10.04 Upgrade / Fix It?

Apr 30, 2010

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.

But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...

Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?

If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?

Ubuntu Installation :: Sun Ultra10 Screen Resolution Un-viewable After Booting?

Oct 10, 2010

I have a Sparc Ultra10, which uses PC hardware. I see the Openboot console display at 1024x768, but when I try to boot from a Ubuntu server install CD for Sparc (for example, 7.04) the screen resolution immediately goes out of range for my monitor (according to a warning message flying around the screen).

I tried adding boot parameters to specify the resolution I want (boot: linux vga=773 screen=1024x76, but they seem to be ignored. I guess the Ubuntu testers all have Sun monitors!

I also tried the 8.04 and 9.10 versions, but they respectively hang after the "S" in Silo and issue the fatal error "Fast Data Access MMU Miss".

I've got Silo version 1.4.14, OBP 3.31.0, and POST 3.1.0. My computer is an UltraSparc IIi at 360 Mhz, with 256 megs of memory.

So, short of acquiring a monitor with the really strange Sun standard resolution, how can I get past this problem and get the resolution I want from Linux at boot time?

Ubuntu Installation :: Blinking Line On Screen When Booting From Live USB

Nov 7, 2010

I am trying to run Ubuntu from a live USB, everything seems to be great until I get to the part where the GUI should come up. Then I get this screen. It's a little hard to see, but it's basically a white bar at the top and black underneath. The black is flickering a lot and the flickering can stay for a short while (30-120 seconds) even after I have rebooted into windows. Sometimes the bar at the top is another solid color (purple, blue, orange, usually white though), I think it is putting my monitor in a strange version of it's self test.

When it is unplugged the monitor while cycle through full screens of different colors. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop AMD64, 10.10 i386, and the latest Fedora to see if another distro had different results. I have also tried 2 other USB drives. I am using Universal USB Installer 1.8.0.8 to make the drives. My own searches have found some problems with graphic drivers for the GeForce 8800 GTX, but they a bit dated. I have tried adding vga=vesa to the boot arguments, I am not sure if I did it right or not, but it resulted in a black screen with a blinking line instead and no flickering.

System specs:
AMD Phenom II 740BE (unlocked to Quad Core @ 3.4Ghz)
ASRock Extreme3 870
WD Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 6.0Gb/s
GSkill 4GB PC1600

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting To CDROM Makes Blank Screen?

Jan 19, 2011

When I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.

My system: Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G with 4Gb ram, 750 Gb SATA HDD, Nvidia Quadro video card.I have gone through the BIOS settings looking for clues:SATA AHCI mode is set to IDE (versus AHCI)SATA port 0-3 native mode set to enabled (versus disabled which would be legacy IDE mode)Azalia codec set to auto (verus disabled)
