I have 10.10 installed within my Windows Xp.All was fine.Then,I upgraded to 11.04.Boot screen etc is fine .Log in is automatic in Classic.Unity & Compiz not supported.Now,again everything is fine except that my xp partitions are not recognised and hence I can not mount them and access them.
View 5 RepliesI've got ubuntu 9.10 in my machine and install avast on it, althought the av dont recognize the windows and the commom partitions. I know that windows is dev/sda1 and the commom is dev/sda5 and in avast, only appears the folder dev, dont appear the subfolders.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. As many people have posted before regarding this issue, i think it was me who messed things up as i believe i incorrectly put grub on the sda1 ? when they asked about grub config during installation i was a bit lost, and even though i went off the help it said if you were not sure choose all of them..
So i am wondering if there is an easy way to fix this. As i am running sata drives on my laptop, so my windows xp recovery option is out... and all i have is a windows image, which i would like to try and repair from ubuntu as i can start ubuntu up.

I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
I have 2 hard drives, first drive (hd0) is for data, second drive (hd1) is for the OS's. Windows 7 was installed on (hd1) a few months ago and wiped out GRUB. But today, I decided to go back to Ubuntu. I performed a fresh install of 9.10 x64 to (hd2), GRUB2 works and finds Ubuntu (both the newly installed x64, and the previous x86 versions), but it does not see Windows 7. The only goal I have right now, is to make Windows 7 bootable, once again.
My "sudo fdisk -l" (typing manually, so skipping the Blocks)

Things I've tried so far:
1) Automatically finding Windows: sudo update-grub2
2) Reinstalling grub via Live CD (9.10): sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/(where sdb1 - x64 Ubuntu is) /dev/sdb
3) Forgetting Ubuntu altogether and fixing boot using Windows 7 - bootrec.exe /fixmbr; bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
Now, number 3 is interesting, I found out that where Windows is installed, /dev/sdb8, is a logical partition, and cannot be made active (bootable). This led me to try number 4:
4) Updating /etc/grub.d with custom 40_Win7 file, and making it bootable (the GRUB makeactive, GRUB2 parttool command):

When I update grub.cfg after trying #4, it gives me the "not a primary partition" error. So now I am confused. Windows 7 was able to boot previously from this very partition, and I don't think installing 9.10 would change a partition type from primary to logical. So, why can't it boot? More importantly, what can I do to boot Windows 7?

I have used wubi for months.Today I decide to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my harddisk.I create a liveUSB to install 10.04.But the problem during installing is when partition detecting,the windows partition can't be detected.It shows 'Ubuntu' on /dev/sda1,but in fact it is the windows partition.I ignore it and go on.After all done,10.04 can work well,but windows can't be booted.
Then I try to use 9.04 CD to install,and it shows 'Widows NT/2000/XP' on /dev/sda1 correctly.At last,both 9.04 and windows xp can be booted.
Is it the problem involving the difference between CD and liveUSB,or 10.04 and 9.04?
Can you tell me why and give me a hand?
i can't boot up my win XP after installing Ubuntu 10.10.
I decided to replace my Vista partition with Ubuntu 10.10 so i redo my partitions and split the current Vista partition to a swap and root partition and install Ubuntu 10.10
Everything went well and i got Ubuntu up and running. However, i realize that GRUB 2 didn't recognize my existing windows partition. I double-check on grub.cfg and see that the default os_prober didn't recognize my XP partition either.
After search on the internet for a while, i found many similar issue where most are fix when manually adding the entry yourself so i decided to add an entry 11_XP under /ect/grub.d/ for windows XP and confirm that the new entry are added to the update grub.cfg file before restarting

I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.

I am posting this information because in the other topics I have seen they always asked for them. Whenever I use Gparted though there are no options for me to make a new partition all the options are basically greyed out and I have even tried using it from gksudo. I am on an EEEpc and cant really do much from the way of live cd's as I have seen in other topics as well.
I recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.

Harddisk 1
1. Windows XP
2. Windows 2000

After the installation was complete, I could only start Ubuntu. Both Windows versions just showed a flashing cursor at the left upper top screen. No HDD activity! How can I get WinXP and Win2000 selectable within grub2?
I'm setting up a new Dell as dual boot. I'm leaning toward first partition for Windows 7, a second partition that can be accessed from either OS, and an extended partition that will have root, swap, /home, etc. For the partition to be accessible to both, what is the preferred format? I've read that FAT32 or NTFS will suffice. ext4 is what I understand should be set for the linux partitions. For the linux partitions, is there an advantage to setting one or two of the partitions as primary, rather than logical? Also, any clear advantages or disadvantages to having a /boot partition? It is likely I'll only have installed one version of Ubuntu at a time.

When I reach the partition part , it doesn't detect the Windows 7 os , and doesn't detect any hard disk partitions ( it sees the whole hard disk as one unallocated partition ). View 2 Replies View RelatedI am editing this post to save people time and effort. This is one of those "Pilot Error" issues or faulty readout issue, not sure which. It turns out that when I saved a document in PDF format to my NTFS Drive (the one I want to share between Windows XP and Ubuntu 10) the .PDF file extension was missing.
1. Ubuntu identified the files as a PDF document (even though the file extension was not there)
2. When trying to access it by double clicking it, the message was "Unable to open document, Permission Denied"
The problem was not permissions, and it was not a PDF file according to the default Document Viewer, but it WAS a PDF file according to the directory listing. The permissions message really had nothing to do with the problem, and identifying the file as a PDF document when it didn't have an extension, was another problem. What SHOULD have happened is a file without an extension should not be identified as a PDF file or If Ubuntu says it's a PDF file, and I double click it, why is the message "Permission Denied" ?? How about "No File Extension" or something like that?
Read the following if you want to see what my problem WAS before I just appended ,PDF to the filename, and now it works fine. On the positive side, installing XP first, then setting aside a large chunk of space for a shared NTFS drive, and THEN installing Ubuntu in the free space works fine. I installed a new 320 GB drive on laptop. Installed Win XP in 32 GB Set aside 250 GB for another Windows partition using MANAGE and formatted D: as an NTFS drive Then successfully Installed ubuntu 10 into remaining unused space. Problem: Ubuntu cannot access files from D: (NTFS Windows) partition. but it can WRITE files without problems, and create directories, just not read them. Have set properties of the Windows drive to shared, still nada. Any trick I'm missing? If I plug in an external USB drive, Ubuntu can read/write to it easily, it just can't read from the 250 GB partition formatted in Windows XP that I wanted to share between operating systems.
I would like to install Ubuntu on an HP Laptop, but they have taken up the whole disk with 4 partitions. I have removed Linux partitions and made an extended one in it's place creating new UUIDs before, but i am worried that windows will not recognize the new partition.

None of the solutions in the bug thread work for me, however--I'm on a Dell system (so it's not HP tools) and I'm not running PC Angel or any similar service (I checked). I assume it is related to the Dell recovery partition, though my old laptop from Dell didn't have this problem even though it also had a recovery partition.
However, before I had partitioned and set up Ubuntu on my new laptop, I installed Wubi (for transferring over the files from my old laptop because I didn't have time to do a full install and deal with problems like this one). Wubi worked fine using the Windows Boot Loader. I understand that WBL isn't capable of loading Linux on its own, which is why I was wondering if it was possible to have GRUB installed on a separate boot partition (not the MBR) and loaded from Windows Boot Loader. All of the information I could find on it didn't work with Windows 7--but again, I know Wubi was capable of doing it. how to set this configuration up?
i specifically told ubuntu to install alongside my operation system (windows) and instead it installed over windows and deleted all the other partitions... i had 200gb of data that i completely lost is there anyway to recover this data?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI played a bit with partitions. I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user, neither I have solid understanding of partitioning. And I hardly remember exact actions that led to this problem. I remember that I saw a warning in GParted that said that the partition was out of bounds or something.. But I followed some solution that I found on ubuntuforums and used fdisk to fix that. So, after installation of Ubuntu I couldn't boot into WindowsXP (after choosing Windows entry in grub2 menu I see only blinking cursor on black screen). But what's more important that I can easily mount Windows partition from Ubuntu. Also I tried to boot from Windows repair console and used FIXBOOT command, and copied[url].... and [url].... files to no avail..Here is the summary of what I got now:

i had ubuntu installed on my computer via wubi inside my windows 7 OS..after a while something went wrong with the partitions magic stuff and windows 7 got corrupted but ubuntu kept working Love ubuntu for that.since i had my stuff backed up and saved in ubuntu i thought i could make a backup off the root.disk file and reinstall windows and that what i did but then i installed ubuntu again via wubi but replaced the new root diskk with the old one that i had backed up.but now it says it cant find disk :O .so it takes me to a shell i seriously need to get that root disk to work or ima loose really important stuf.
