I have a dual-boot with windows and linux. Sometimes if I reboot from windows into linux, I notice that when X is starting up before the login screen comes up it will flash a screenshot from Windows. Has anyone ever noticed this?
View 4 RepliesHowever, I anyways went for reinstalling kubuntu 10.04. The installation went fine. It asked to reboot at the end, which I did. After the reboot, it gives me the login screen. After filling up the details there it again shows me the same login screen. This goes on forever.

But, if I reboot from Windows into Windows, the Windows time is right . I think this results from different ways Fedora and Linux keepi track of time and what they do to the real time hardware clock.Could someone explain exactly what is going wrong and how I can resolve the problem?

Monday I came back to work to discover a 17 GB log file in /var/log that ate up my root partition and gave me trouble running. I deleted it, which solved the problem EXCEPT that now when I boot, instead of the Xfce login prompt, I get an X-Windows login prompt. This takes me to a terminal (which apparently reads my .zshrc file), from which I can start an Xfce session by running xfce4-session. How can I get back to booting into the Xfce login screen?

I have an international skype interview planned in 10 minutes, and my flatmates computer is now opening up using Windows, and Skype is not there! I know he changes back and forth from Windows to Linux on this computer, he lets me use it often. And when I use Linux, it has Skpye! View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a weird interaction between Linux and Windows with the HDMI output from my Dell Studio XPS 1645 and a Dell S2409W monitor. Whenever I reboot from Windows back over into Linux, the Input Color Format on the monitor has changed from RGB to YPbPr, and thus the colors are a pink'n'green mess. I can manually change the mode back to RGB but whenever the monitor goes to sleep it will come back as YPbPr! The only way I can fix it is to unplug the power cord and hold the power button for 5 seconds to reset the monitor -- after plugging the power cord back in then the color format will be correct again (RGB.) Or rebooting back over into Windows the color format is correct.
This never happens rebooting from Linux to Linux, Linux to Windows or Windows to Windows -- only from Windows to Linux.This is on Fedora 12 but I don't know that the version particularly matters -- I've only ever used Fedora 12 on this new hardware so I can't say that it does or doesn't work with anything else.
I installed linux system into a USB stick, but it never asks me to enter login password (i am the default user "root") when booting. I checked the settings in "User and Group" panel, and found everything there is OK. What additional settings should I make to this problem?

I've tried using older kernels also just for info: my home and usr directories are in separate partitions & i've named my ubuntu partition as 'ubt'. i edited grub.conf file before this happened ( to comment out older kernel boot options) but grub is working porperly and i am able to boot into windows without any issues.
I cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.

I have a redhat server with SAMBA file services. I have copied all the users files into their respective home directories and mapped a network drive to their folders. However, when I try to access a file in those folders the machine reboots itself. There are no error messages or anything, it just reboots!

I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
just migrated to Lucid from Jaunty and noticed that the login startup screen looks more like windoze (shows all authorized users).One of the endearing security checks with Unix was that if you had access to a console you had guess both userid AND password - the system wouldn't tell you which was wrong.I feel that we have lowered security by making the list of authorized users visible on a console. Is there any way to turn it off and force users to enter both userid and password?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a regular software update on a 5.5 box (and rebooting), I now have problems starting xen (version "xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.3.x86_64").
Running "/etc/init.d/xend start" yields no output, and checking the script, I see that the script halts if "/proc/xen" doesn't exist.
Checking the filesystem, I find that the "/proc/xen" entry is indeed gone. Restarting the CentOS box does not help.
Should I reinstall Xen? If so, should I remove any portions of Xen before I do?

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

I've been dual booting Ubuntu based distros and Windows 7 x64 for a couple of years now, but since installing Ubuntu Natty I've been experiencing a strange problem. Every time I reboot from Ubuntu and load Windows, Windows will always crash and reboot shortly after reaching the desktop. This even happens in Safe Mode, but if you simply reload Windows after the crash it works perfectly. The only error report in the event viewer is a kernel-power one stating that the system shut down unexpectedly. I'm not even getting a BSOD.
This only started happening after installing Ubuntu 11.04, but even so I thought this must have been a coincidence up until now. However, after a lot of testing it really does only happen after rebooting from Ubuntu. If I load Windows from GRUB straight after switching my PC on, it works fine. If I reboot Windows after this and boot straight back into Windows, it works fine. I can only assume that Ubuntu is doing something weird to the Windows hard drive without appearing to mount it.
I have switched to Opera because my Firefox eats my CPU and makes everything go slow (it even makes my music lag!) when I have a few tabs open or try to scroll on a fairly big site with pictures and flash stuff.
These problems are completely gone with Opera, but I would like it to behave more like my Firefox does. I use multiple workspaces all the time, so it really bugs be when Opera insists on opening new tabs in the window already open in another workspace. That takes away some of the point with multiple workspaces, if I need to drag opera along all the time. Making it show in every workspace is not an alternative, since I try sorting different tasks to different windows.
What I tried was to add the -newwindow flag to the opera launcher. This works, but however, I have to open the first tab manually (duh!) which is kind of unnecessary.
So how do I make Opera open new windows WITH a tab when I use the opera shortcut launcher? And if someone could throw in how I can make a startpage open instead of the ballot screen, it would be nice!

So I installed Ubuntu 10.10 beta because v9 wouldnt work, I'm using an HP Mini 311. So far everything was working great, and after installing updates I restarted and these "starting file manager" windows kept spamming the desktop!, just along the bottom and you can see in this screenshot basically on the bottom, how do i fix this? i dont want to go back to windows!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a samba share on a linux server, connecting to it with a windows 2k3 server via tools > map network drive. The goal is to be able to use windows to change the security of the samba share. The good news is it works! The bad news is it's not QUITE perfect:
The share is called /company. I started with the following to give everyone access to everything, set the owner of the share to administrator (my domain admin on the Windows domain), and set the group owner to domain users (group that everyone on the domain is part of):

I then mapped the drive as a regular user, and of course, can access/modify/delete/rename/create anything I want. Then I picked a folder to lock down. Let's call it /company/myFolder. I did this on the Windows server by mapping the drive as administrator (the owner), right click > properties > security tab > advanced > highlight "domain users" and "everyone" and click edit > clear all (i.e. remove all access). Go back to Linux and

The only issue that remains is that I am able to rename/delete "myFolder" as a regular user. I thought this was coming from the "acl map full control = true" parameter in smb.conf, but I changed it to false and verified the change and it still happens. If I remove group and world write access to /company, I am no longer allowed to rename/delete myFolder, but then I can't create a new folder. If I add group write access back in I can create files but can also rename/delete folders within /company that have --- specified for group access. Any ideas what I need to tweak to make this right?
I have a Windows-only language lab program ('Logolab') which provides students with listen and repeat exercises on audio and video material loaded by the teacher.
