Ubuntu :: Gnome Broken After Upgrade To 11.04 - Can't Move / Resize Windows

May 19, 2011

Though I am Linux user for sometime I only recently started using Ubuntu (starting from 10.10). So far so good. Last week I was suggested by the update manager to upgrade to 11.04. I went for it. After the upgrade it worked nicely; I was so happy. It provided Mac like menus and stuffs. An auto hiding side bar. With overwhelming interest, I started paying around with it. In that process, I turned on the Compiz cube. It warned me that it was going to disable the compiz wall; I confirmed that. And that was it. I lost everything.

Now no keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+f4, Alt+f4, Alt+f1, Alt+f2, Alt+tab) work. No Window borders; no task bar. There was a blank desktop. All I could do was right click and get a context menu. With that I created a shortcut to run gnome-terminal, started the terminal, typed google-chrome and then typing this in the forum. As I said earlier, I do not have any short cut keys. I f I want to go back to the terminal, I have to close this browser. I can't move/resize windows.

Debian :: Opened Windows 'wobble' When Dragged Around On The Desktop

May 24, 2011

OK so that probably wasn't the best subject line as it was a hard one to describe.

Using Wheezy on an Acer Aspire One 5737 laptop. After a recent update now when I drag an open window around on the desktop it well wobbles in a distorted manner, the same goes when scrolling the page doesn't scroll smoothly it, well, wobbles. I have had the same issue in the past with Lenny on a laptop and I had to install video drivers it fix it however I 'think' Debian now supplies it's own drivers, is this correct? I'm not all that good with the video aspects of Linux. Is there something I need to check or maybe reinstall to correct thsi problem?

Ubuntu :: Unity 2D Launcher Resize Options?

Apr 30, 2011

I recently installed 11.04 and Unity 2D (because my old laptop can't run the full 3D version). So far I'm pretty impressed and its growing on me, despite the negative press I'd heard and my own skepticism of change going into the new UI.

One thing that I haven't been able find out is if there is an option to vertically resize the launcher based on the number of active icons. I only have about half a dozen icons pinned to the launcher permanently, so there's a lot of blank "dead space" on the bottom half of the launcher unless I have a zillion other things open simultaneously.

Is there a way to make the Unity 2D launcher automatically shrink upwards to fit the number of pinned icons + active applications? (I've attached a mock up of the sort of feature I'm talking about.) It would be fantastic if there was a way to do this because it would be a much cleaner and more efficient use of my screen space. I've already downloaded the Unity 2D Settings application, but there are only 5 or so things you can edit with that little app. I was hoping for a method with a bit more flexibility.

I've heard that Unity 2D is specifically designed NOT to use Compiz, so things like cube desktop and wobbly windows will never be available in this 2D desktop environment. (Sadface for losing out on the eye candy I used to have in 10.10 )

Ubuntu Installation :: Create Resize Move LVM Partition ?

Sep 2, 2010

As mentioned here I am planning on installing with encryption. This involves using LVM in the partition scheme.

I am following this guide here which uses Mandriva to do the installation. [url]

However, I notice that GParted doesn't seem to have any support for LVM, which is going to be a pain in the rear if I subsequently try to add Ubuntu to the Mandriva boot setup.

The problem I have with DiskDrake (Mandrivas partition editor) is that it only seems to be able to put partitions at the beginning of the drive and it doesn't seem to be able to move partitions. e.g. if I want to create a new partition at the end for swap and leave some unallocated space in the middle for my future Ubuntu installation I am stuck. GParted allows me to create at the end or effectively move it by resizing the beginning and end of the partition.

DiskDrake allows me to create and edit LVM partitions.

Is there perhaps another partition editor that does both? Or maybe a development version of one that does it? Or some option I am missing?

Ubuntu :: Gparted - Can't Resize/move To Fill Unallocated Space

Jun 16, 2010

I installed a dual boot windows 7 and xubuntu and now decided that I would like to allocate more hard disk space to xubuntu. I've resized the windows partition (sda2 in the screenshot) and it is now the grey unallocated. I'm having trouble moving this unallocated space to the linux portion (sda5). I did my homework and found that this is done by booting off a live cd and using gparted from there, because you can't modify a partition that you're using. I also read that you had to turn swap off. I did both of these tasks, but as you can see from the attached screenshot, I am unable to resize the linux partition to fill the unallocated space.

Here's my "sudo fdisk -l" for reference:

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[code]....

Also, the sda4 is a shared partition that I can access from both windows and linux.

Ubuntu :: Unity - Unable To Resize Launcher Icons Or Set To Auto-hide

May 2, 2011

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:

1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.

2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.

Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)

Now in Fedora I have Open Office. As far as word processing it's fine. But when it comes to inserting Images I hit a brick wall.

when it cam to making bingo cards, I could choose multiple images and resize them with one click, move them all together and crop them on the fly. Open Office doesn't do that. My question is: What other option are there in the fedora world that could help me.

Ubuntu :: Gnome / Metacity / X After Lucid Upgrade - No Toolbar - Couldn't Move / Resize / Close

May 2, 2010

System:
Gateway box
P4 3GHz processor
1 GB RAM
one 40 GB Western Digital IDE Hard drive
one 500 GB Western Digital IDE Hard drive
NVidia-GeForce FX 5200 DDR 128MB Video Card
Hauppauge HVR-1600 Tuner Card (with accompanying remote of unknown model #)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Card

Ran Lucid upgrade on a mythbuntu box on Friday. On startup, though, the desktop looked quite odd - in fact, I didn't even know it was my desktop at first. It was a small white terminal 'window' in the upper left corner of a black screen. My mouse was responsive, because I had to mouse over the 'window' before I could type. I say 'window' because it had no toolbar, and I couldn't move, resize, or close it. No top or bottom panels on Gnome. it was so unrecognizable I didn't initially think it was my desktop. I assumed it was nvidia drivers, and spent a long time making sure they were installed - they do not seem to be the problem. After searching forums/internets, found several pages telling people to rename/move/delete .gnome, .gnome2, etc and gnome should revert to default. Problem persists. I can open gedit or firefox by running from command line, but when I close those windows, the image of those windows remain as part of the background.....

Ubuntu :: Gui Windows Won't Resize Correctly

Apr 23, 2010

i will occasionally open a gui program, for example an ip address calc and a dvd burning program, and the bottom of the window is cut off by the screen; the screen size is put on the most applicable, detectable screen size; on both a netbook with a small rectangular screen and an older desktop with CRT monitor that is square; i could see both of these having issues beyond my own user-stupidity, so i thought i would ask: how do i get to the bottom of the window to see very crucial info? i hover the mouse on the top until it changes to a horiz bar, but it wont drag down;

- i hover mouse on bottom but it wont change to bar/arrow;

- i hover on corners to make an angle bar/arrow but it will only resize horizontally;

- i right click the top border and hit "resize" but it will only resize horizontally;

this, as well as getting my touchpad settings to stay the same after poweroff have been the bane of my existence edit: sometimes these posts are simply echo chambers for me to listen to my own ineptitude; i found how to save the touchpad settings,re-edit: i did not actually fix the touchpad, but i have posted elsewhere so as to not cross-post.

Ubuntu :: Disk Resize Failed Now Windows Won't Boot

Nov 27, 2010

I am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:

ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!

Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.
