I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.
View 3 RepliesI have been using ubuntu for a little while so i'm not a total newbie. But im not very confident with installing the latest verion of ubuntu studio. Previously i upgraded to ubuntu studio through the terminal window from Jaunty. This time i want to do a fresh install via a DVD. I tried earlier but the part im confused about is the partitioning and formatting process. I have 2 hardrives. One of my hard drives has my XP OS on it along with my entire life. So I cant afford to make a mistake. The other has an older 32bit version of ubuntu studio on it.
I have looked online but I havent found much help. What i was thinking of is just unplugging my windows drive, doing a fresh install on the other. But then i wouldnt know what to expect when i boot up and plug in the XP drive.
I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.
I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.
I removed the KDE with
yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.
I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.
I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.
I upgraded to ubuntustudio last night while I was sleeping, and when I woke up this morning and restarted the laptop the sleek desktop environment was gone. I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop
View 2 Replies View Relatedi had a dual boot with xp and lucid lynx, then upgraded the xp to win7. windows commonly overwrites grub with it's bootloader. and so it did. now i can't access my lucid OS. i need to get grub back (i need to get lucid back).

I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?
To avoid to complicated answers, just give me a solution that works without criptic linux commands, i get lost in that.
Also, i am actually a supporter of open source and free software, but i also think that linux is nowhere near being easy to use for the general population, no matter the microsofts conditioning. So i guess ill give it a go at 11.00 again to see whats going on
I have a dual boot laptop (Acer Timeline 1830) working fine. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. I need to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional (Thats Winblows for ya.). My questions: Has anybody here done this upgrade, did it go seamlessly (Didn't destroy your master boot record, etc) and is there anything anything else i should know before doing this upgrade?
View 7 Replies View Relatedi want to install ubuntu 10.04 on my studio 15 with i5 processor (already having win7 home ) in dual boot mode. i tried to install , it installed , but after restarting from second time onwards blank screen is coming and boot options are not coming , ERROR : no module found and with some values i tried for 4 times but unsuccessful , i did below steps
-my hdd is 320 so i separated 200(for win 7) , 50 (for personal ) , 40 unallocated for linux
-inserted ubuntu 10.04 rc1 CD
- in fourth step when selecting disk , i selected manual option(3rd)
- and i selected 40GB unallocated and formatted to ext4 and selected as root and install
- after reboot in boot options i can see 4 options i selected win 7 and from win7 i restarted
- after that black screen coming , boot options are not coming
I have linux in my system with windows (dual boot). Now when I start my PC. It shows me only Linux, in splash screen. but when i press ENTER key on this. It starts in windows not in linux. And I completely unable to boot my system in linux.

I want to reclaim my disk space from the old OS as well...to make matters alittle messier, 9.10 was installed first...then after encountering trouble I installed 9.04 to see if it solved my problem...when I figured out how to solve problem it worked same on both releases...so I now want to remove 9.04 and stay with 9.10...but I don't want the uninstall of 9.04 to impact the 9.10 install...I would also like to adjust the partitions so that I can use all of the disk for 9.10 (including that which was used for 9.04 and it's swap file)..

I cannot sync my ipod touch, I can't play some of my games because they are all meant for windows and wine does not work for then so what I want to do is uninstall ubuntu and reinstall windows xp, then I will reinstall ubuntu and this time around I will make a dual boot. Only one problem, I don't know how to uninstall ubuntu.

View 6 Replies View Relatedhave been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.
then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.
this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.
how do i configure a designated monitor to be my main desktop when running dual monitors in separate x windows?i cant use twin view, as full screen issues and refresh rates are different.

When I look at my router which is running DD-WRT I noticed my active connections was over 500 whereas should only be around 200 maybe or less. While I am an IT Service Management major, I really only know enough to be dangerous, and I don't want to ruin the first computer that I have ever bought outright. (Nor do I want to have to reload Windows 7 again.) I also want to be able to run Microsoft Office (I despise OpenOffice, so this is not an option), other programs native to Windows, and iTunes. View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. I decided not to use Windows anymore, so I deleted it's partition (using Gparted) and formatted it to ext4. Then I did update of grub.Here are few issues I am having now:
1. The new partition won't automount
2. I can not use new partition. It has only one directory - lost and found. I can't copy data there.
3. Grub still has Windows 7 option (it doesn't work of course)
4. Grub fails to boot (it says it didn't find /windows partition), so I have to always skip that manually

View 4 Replies View Related i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.
I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.
My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.
I got a Dell Studio 1555 preinstalled with Vista and it already had 3 Primary Partitions. I needed to install Fedora Core 9 on this machine and to organize my HDD(500 GB)
I had two options:
1) Either to create a fourth primary partition
2) Create an extended partition with a number of logical partitions
I chose the option 2. I want to know if i make some free space by deleting one of the logical partitions, can that free space be used for installing Fedora ?
Also how to proceed with the installation?
